Update on Storm Debris Removal

9/28/2017

Picture
9/28/17 @ 9:30 a.m. - As of Wednesday, September 27th, a total of 19,049 cubic yards of storm debris has been collected in Nassau County. The contractor, CrowderGulf, currently has 8 haul trucks in operation. 7 are still located on Amelia Island and 1 truck has begun working west of the Shave Bridge to start addressing debris off the island. Other trucks will move off island as that area nears completion.

This week, the contractor also began an assessment of all debris west of I-95 and is determining the best route for collection. We anticipate that the contractor will place additional haul trucks west of I-95 soon.

Due to the widespread amount of debris, the contractor cannot provide an exact schedule for removal, however they began east and are working their way west. They are working 7 days per week from dawn until dusk in an effort to remove the debris quickly. Attached is a list of roads that the hauler has removed debris from so far, however please note that all of the listed roads may not be complete. Large limbs and logs may require additional equipment, therefore, this type of debris may be left behind at first pass. Once all roads have been completely cleared, the contractor will do one final pass to pick up debris that may have been placed in the right of way after their first pass  or which may have accidentally been missed by the contractor.

We have asked the contractor to provide this information periodically so that the public can see which areas they've cleared and hopefully help people determine as they are approaching their area. The best advice we can give is to just be ready and know that they will be to you as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please contact the County Manager's Office at (904) 530-6010 or email [email protected].

9/26/17 @ 10:45 a.m. - At last night's meeting, the County Commissioners presented a Resolution to the Florida Native Plant Society proclaiming October 2017 as Florida Native Plant Month. Did you know that non-native plants are evasive and can cause harm to our local environment and our health? Just because you can find it locally in stores does not mean that it's safe to use in our region. We urge all citizens to famililarize themselves with the dangers related to invasive species and their impact on natural resources. Our local Cooperative Extension Offices has experts that can help you determine which types of plants are best for your landscape and their services are free! For more information, please contact the Cooperative Extension Office at (904) 530-6350.

9/25/17 @ 11:20 a.m. - There is a long list of residents affected by Hurricane Irma right here in Nassau County who have reached out to Emergency Management requesting assistance for a variety of things including cleaning out flooded homes, cutting up fallen trees, and helping them get debris to the right-of-way or drop off sites. These residents are elderly or unfortunate and are not able to do this themselves. Is there anyone in the community interested in volunteering their time to help a neighbor in need? Even a few hours of your time would be a tremendous help for these individuals.

Please contact Volunteer Coordinate, Mike Efferson, at (904) 548-0900 and let him know when you are available so we can get these people the assistance they need as soon as possible.

9/21/17 @ 10:05 p.m. - Please see the below information from Emergency Management regarding canvassing of areas affected by hurricanes.

Disaster Survival Assistance Teams (DSAT) will be arriving in Nassau County TOMORROW. These teams will be doing door to door canvassing of areas affected by Hurricane Irma. They will have identification on them and the Nassau EM will post information as to the areas they are traveling to, as soon as that information becomes available.
DSAT provides information directly to survivors by canvassing the community door-to-door. DSAT brings information to locations where citizens frequent, so that everyone in the community has equal access and understanding of the assistance process.

DSAT circulates information on how to register with FEMA for disaster aid, the location and operation hours of Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC), and mitigation options. All other information is dependent on the event that has taken place. For example, during a flooding event, DSAT may hand out information on water damage and mold prevention.
Examples of varying FEMA identification is posted below. Please note, if you are unsure if a person is a legitimate FEMA DSAT representative or not and need verification, you can call the Nassau County Sheriff's Office Non -Emergency line at 904-225-5174.
