Each year, the Board of County Commissioners select a volunteer to the recognized at the Nassau County Volunteer Center's Annual Awards Luncheon. Nominations are submitted from the various County departments that utilize volunteers such as the Library, Animal Control, and the County Extension Office. This year's winner is Dee Torre Kaufman and she was recognized at the Annual Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday, April 21, 2016. Dee has been volunteering for the Nassau County Library System since 2009 through the Fernandina Beach Friends of the Library. She has served as First Vice President and Campaign Chair for six years and currently serves as President. Her primary role has been grant writing and coordinating fundraising events. Dee has written numerous grants on the Library's behalf, earning $129,00 in grant funding to be used to assist with program costs, purchase of library materials and equipment. She developed and helped organize unique fundraising events including Pony Up and Party, Story Telling Slam, and Food for Thought. These events combined raised over $36,000. When asked why she volunteers, Dee stated that she believes in giving back to her community. She had a great career and remains passionate about education, literacy, and building the capacity of the next generation. She indicated that volunteering has provided her with an opportunity to meet many other people from a wide variety of backgrounds that share her passion to help the community. Dee stated, "We have all learned more about ourselves and our community by working through good times and through all the struggles, and ultimately achieved our goal of obtaining a new facility for the Fernandina Branch. We could not have done this without the help of the community and we are grateful to everyone involved in helping make our dream a reality". Nassau County is grateful to you Dee, as well as the other members of the Friends of the Library organizations throughout the County for all you have done for our library system. The dedication you have demonstrated and the commitment you have made to improve the quality of life for your fellow citizens reflect great credit upon you and all Nassau County residents. Thanks for all you do! -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office On Wednesday, April 20, 2016, the Board of County Commissioners presented a Resolution to Dale Burkett in appreciation of nearly 33 years of outstanding service. Dale began his employment with Nassau County on July 5, 1983, as a Maintenance Helper in the Road & Bridge Department. In October 2003, Dale was promoted to a Road & Bridge Supervisor position and spent the next eight years planning, organizing and supervising personnel engaged in construction, maintenance and repair of roads, bridges, rights-of-ways, and drainage structures. In April 2011, Dale was promoted to a Road & Bridge Operations Supervisor where he performed supervisory duties related to the directing and coordinating of maintenance and repair operations of the Road & Bridge Division, and remained on-call twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week. Dale often went above and beyond the call of duty and could always be counted on to a job done quickly and efficiently. He provided valuable knowledge, guidance, and leadership to his co-workers and those under his supervision. Dale announced his retirement effective Friday, April 22, 2016, and will be greatly missed by those who had the honor to work with him, as well as the citizens of Nassau County. We wish Dale continued success, happiness, and health in the years to come. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office On Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 9:00 a.m., the Board of County Commissioners will have their first public hearing to consider an Ordinance prohibiting and regulating personal property left on the beaches within the unincorporated areas of Amelia Island.
Since July 2015, the County Manager, County Attorney, and the Tourist Development Council have been gathering information on how to address items being left on the beach. They have held a series of public meetings with concerned citizens, homeowner representatives, and resort representatives to discuss applicable state laws, state regulations, and budget issues related to enforcing the Ordinance. The attached draft Ordinance was subsequently prepared and includes information regarding the purpose of the Ordinance, definitions of personal property, and clarification on the types of items that are considered to be a public nuisance and threat to the safety of citizens and wildlife. The Ordinance proposes that any property left on unincorporated area of the County beaches from one hour after sundown to 6:00 a.m., shall be considered a nuisance and will be disposed of. Please note that persons with disabilities will be able to apply for a permit at no-charge which will allow the individual to store items in an area that does not obstruct access to the public beach, or have impact on vegetation, turtle nest of protected species. All interested parties are encouraged to attend the hearing on Wednesday, April 20th at 9:00 a.m. to ask questions or express any concerns you have related to this issue. Meetings are held in the Commissioner Chambers located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL 32097 (James S. Page Governmental Complex). A second public hearing has also been scheduled for Monday, April 25, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office Please be advised that this weekend's lane closure for the construction of the barrier wall on State Road 200 will take place on Sunday, April 17th, not on Saturday due to the Katie Ride. The lane closure will be between Mt. Zion Loop and Duval Road from 7:00 a.m. to approximately 5:00 p.m.
We would also like to take this opportunity to let everyone know that FDOT is aware of the concerns the community has regarding the widening project and are continuously looking for ways to keep delays at a minimum. FDOT has clauses in their contract that prevents contractors from closing lanes during the work week, on holiday weekends, and on weekends where major events are taking place locally such as the Shrimp Festival, the Concours d'Elegance, and the Gator Bowl (to name a few). However, they cannot place so many restrictions that it prevents the contractors from completing the work during the time frame outlined in their contracts. FDOT appreciates everyone's patience while they work to have this project completed on time. As a reminder, you can locate information related to the widening project online at www.nflroads.com and for traffic alerts, you can follow FDOT on Twitter@FDOT_NEFL. Smart phone users may also wish to download the app "Florida 511" which includes current traffic conditions and travel times. The County will continue to share information here on The County Insider as it is received from FDOT. Though this is an FDOT project, the County feels it is important to share the updates to keep everyone informed about changes to traffic patterns, lane closures, and any other issues that affect our citizens. If you ever have any questions or concerns related to the widening project, please contact Debbie Delgado, Public Information Officer for Atkins Global, at (904) 360-5437 or via e-mail at [email protected]. -Sabrina Robertson County Manger's Office Just a reminder that the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event is tomorrow.
