6/5/25 @ 11:00 a.m. - June 5th is World Environment Day, a day celebrated annually to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the environment. This year's World Environment Day focuses on ending plastic pollution. According to the World Environmental Day website, plastic pollution affects every corner of the planet. Plastics contribute to environmental degradation, soil contamination, and is harmful to the ecosystem.

Microplastics are now being found in the human body, raising concerns about potential health impacts. Long-term effects are being researched but early studies have indicated that microplastics can interfere with digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall health.

While reducing plastic pollution nationally requires policy changes and technological advances, there are things residents can do locally to make a difference.
  • Reduce consumption: Choose products with minimal packaging. Opt for bulk purchases instead of individually wrapped items and avoid single-use plastics like cutlery, straws and water bottles.
  • Reuse items: Carry reusable bags, water bottles and food containers.
  • Recycle effectively: learn about your local recycling guidelines and ensure you're properly sorting and disposing of plastic waste.
  • Support businesses that reduce plastic waste: Your purchasing decisions can influence businesses to adopt more sustainable practices.
  • Cook more: Making your own meals can significantly reduce the amount of plastic packaging you consume.
  • Choose reusable alternatives: Opt for glass and stainless steel containers instead of plastic ones, and use wooden cutting boards instead of plastic ones.
  • Be mindful of microplastics: Avoid products that intentionally add microplastics that later end up in the ocean.

Local garbage companies offer recycling to their customers. However, Nassau County also provides three recycling facilities where you can dispose of your plastic waste at no-cost. For locations, please click here.

Happy Earth Day!

Today, we would like to highlight Nassau County's recycling program. Recycling helps conserve natural resources, reduces the need for landfill space, and minimizes the environmental impact from producing new products.

Nassau County Solid Waste provides a Convenience Recycle Center for the collection and disposal of solid waste and recyclables for its residents. Located on Landfill Road in Callahan, this site accepts a variety of recyclable materials including cardboard, glass (clear, brown and green), aluminum, plastics (1 and 2), paper, electronics, appliances, paint and used cooking oil.

We also offer two additional recycling sites: 72823 Motes Road in Bryceville and 86200 Gene Lasserre Blvd. in Yulee. These two sites accept paper, glass (clear, brown and green); plastics (1 and 2), aluminum and cardboard.

All recycling sites are FREE to use by Nassau County residents. To learn more, visit https://www.nassaucountyfl.com/228/Solid-Waste.

We've also attached a handy recycling brochure to provide proper recycling techniques and information on what can and can't be recycled. You can download the PDF version here: https://www.nassaucountyfl.com/.../24233/Recycling-Brochure-
