As our community continues to grow and new transportation improvements are introduced, it’s important that everyone feels confident using them. We’re sharing the following information to help drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists understand how to safely and correctly navigate a roundabout. Knowing what to expect and how to use a roundabout not only improves traffic flow, but also helps keep everyone moving safely and smoothly.

According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts are a proven safety countermeasure because they can substantially reduce crashes that result in serious injury or death. They can also:

-Improve safety
-Promote lower speeds and traffic calming 
-Reduce conflict points
-Lead to improved overall performance

Understanding how to use a roundabout helps ensure these improvements deliver their full benefits, safer travel, smoother traffic flow, and a more connected community. By taking a few minutes to learn the rules of the roundabout, everyone can play a role in keeping our roads safe and efficient for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders alike.

Please join us in welcoming Gary Davis as Board of County Commissioners' Communications Manager. Gary brings with him nearly fifteen years of experience in strategic communication, media relations, crisis communication, and brand management. 

As the Communications Manager, Gary will lead the BOCC's communications strategy, including media relations, creation of communications plans, and the promotion of priorities, critical information, county programs, and activities. Gary will also work to cultivate relationships with local media sources to improve the flow of information and awareness for Nassau County residents.  

Gary's work history includes a Producer for Quincy Media, Executive Producer for Gray Media, and most recently as Senior Executive Producer of E.W. Scripps Company.  Gary's writing, content planning and attention to detail has earned him two (2) Emmy Awards from the National Academy of Television Arts (NATAS) Mid-America chapter for Best Newscast and Breaking News.  Gary has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcasting and Journalism from Western Illinois University. In his free time, Gary enjoys history, traveling, and spending time with his beloved Golden Retriever Banjo. 

Director of Strategic Advancement Brandy Carvalho stated, "We’re thrilled to welcome Gary to Nassau County. His talent and commitment to transparent, effective communication will help us better engage our residents and ensure our residents stay informed and connected."

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has been awarded the 2025 Award of Excellence in Audio Visual Communication from the National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO) for its video, Paving the Way to a Better Nassau.
 
NACIO's Awards of Excellence program honors the innovative, creative, and outstanding work of county government communicators and communications departments throughout the nation.
 
The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) is committed to keeping residents informed through a variety of channels. Recognizing that not all residents receive their news through traditional media, the BOCC has begun producing short videos to help bridge that gap and share important information in a more accessible way. The latest video, Paving the Way to a Better Nassau, was produced by Multimedia and Communications Manager, Omari Matlock. The video highlights the County’s Pavement Management Program and its benefits to the community. It also features a Nassau County resident who shares how recent road improvements have positively impacted his neighborhood, offering a firsthand perspective on how this work is making a difference for taxpayers across the County.
 
BOCC Chairman A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann stated, “Paving the Way to a Better Nassau focuses on the County’s commitment to improving mobility and provides insight into how tax dollars are being utilized. Paving the Way to a Better Nassau is more than just a project update. It’s a visual representation of the Board’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and long-term investment into the County’s infrastructure.”

​It's Government Communicators Day! Today is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the invaluable contributions of public communicators across the nation. This day serves as an opportunity to spotlight the tireless efforts of government communicators who work diligently behind the scenes to keep the community informed. 

Jennifer Bennerotte, Communications Director of Edina, Minnesota, and current President of 3CMA stated, “As a public communicator, your impact is felt in various aspects of government operations. Whether it's spearheading public outreach and education campaigns during rate increase approvals, crafting media advisories for award ceremonies, or formulating strategic responses during crises, government communicators are the unsung heroes ensuring transparent and effective communication."

Today, we would like to recognize the efforts of local government communicators who work daily to keep our residents informed and for shaping public perception, disseminating critical information and fostering community engagement.

6/20/24 @ 4:20 p.m. - In late December 2023, Nassau County’s official FaceBook page for the Board of County Commissioners was compromised and inaccessible to County staff. Despite diligent efforts from staff, including the County Attorney’s office, there was little progress.  A temporary FaceBook page was created in the interim to continue sharing information with the community, however the Board of County Commissioners knew it was imperative that we regain access to the original FaceBook page with its 12,500+ followers to ensure information could get out to as many residents as possible, particularly as we head into the 2024 hurricane season.
 
Congressman Aaron Bean and his administrative team, joined our efforts to regain access to our original FaceBook page. And thanks to their hard work, the County regained access this yesterday! We are grateful to Congressman Bean and his office for all their support as we worked to resolve this very important matter. A special thank you to Bryan Campbell for being our champion in pushing forward with this issue until it was finally resolved.

The National Association of Counties (NACo) has proclaimed April as National County Government Month. Each day this month, we will provide different facts about Nassau County, including information about its history, services provided and more.

Public Information Office
It is the goal of the Public Information Office to provide accurate and timely information to the residents of Nassau County, specifically as it relates to activities under the jurisdiction of the Board of County Commissioners. In addition to providing Press Releases, newspaper article, monthly reports, and annual reports, the Department maintains the news blog, The County Insider, and social media pages on FaceBook, Twitter and Linkedin. 

The Department provides monthly email/news blasts which features stories about County employees, projects and achievements; information on upcoming meetings in events; our weekly edition of "Week in Pictures"; job opportunities and and more. If you're interested in receiving weekly emails,  you can sign up here. 

Other ways to stay abreast of things happening in your county is to sign up for website alerts including our public notice alerts which will notify you when public meetings and gatherings, as well as website alerts where you can be notified when meetings, workshops and special events are added to the website calendar.
