This will require one lane of traffic to be closed from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. on both days. Driver's should expect miner delays. Flagmen will be in the area to direct traffic.

Nassau County has been selected as a 2017 Healthy Weight Community Champion by the Florida Department of Health. This award was developed by the Florida Department of Health to highlight communities for their efforts in implementing programs and policies that encourage active lifestyles and healthy eating habits.

The award was presented by Nassau County Health Department Director, Dr. Eugenia Ngo-Seidel at the Board of County Commissioner's meeting held on Wednesday, February 15th. Dr. Seidel commended the Board for their "commitment to making healthy living available and accessible to all residents" and reminded them that government plays an important role in decreasing the prevalence of unhealthy weight in their jurisdiction.

Nassau County has adopted numerous programs to encourage healthy eating and physical activity in the community. Examples include the "Eat Smart, Be Active Class" series in which participants learn to plan healthy snacks and meals, control portions, and to become more physically active, as well as free classes related to small farm topics such as growing fruits and vegetables. In addition, the County provides several parks and recreation facilities with ballparks and walking trails to give residents options for becoming more physically active. Locally, the Nassau County Health Improvement Coalition has worked for several years to bring community partners together to prevent chronic disease. Press Release

2/17/17 @ 2:05 p.m. - The Nassau County Building Department began utilizing software today that allows contractors to submit a permitting/inspection request online. Previously, the only way to request an inspection was to call the Building Department and make a request by telephone. By utilizing the website, contractors can now make requests quickly and conveniently. Inspection results are available the following day.

To locate the inspection page online, visit www.nassaucountyfl.com and select Building Department from the drop down menu under “Departments”. Once on the Building Department page, select “Permitting/Inspection Request” on the left side of the screen. Here you can also find step-by-step instructions for utilizing this feature.

All inspection requests made online prior to 4:00 p.m. will be scheduled for the next business day. Contractors can also still make a request to schedule an inspection for the next business day by phone if requested by 4:00 p.m. All re-inspection fees must be paid before scheduling an inspection unless a contractor has a signed re-inspection fees affidavit on file in the Building Department.

2/13/17 @ 2:00 p.m. - The Florida Department of Transportation has provided the attached flyer regarding  an open house for the area's first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) at Interstate I-95, as well as  current construction projects along State Road/A1A from Still Quarters Road to County Road 107/O'Neil Scott Road in Nassau County.

The open house will be held on Thursday, February 23, 2017 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Nassau Room at Florida State Community College located at 76348 William Burgess Blvd., Yulee, FL 32097. Those interested can drop by during that time to learn more about the project including the timeframe, construction activities, traffic impacts and other details. Project staff will be available at the meeting to answer questions. Since this is an informal open house, no presentation is scheduled.

2/8/17 at 1:45 p.m. - A sewer main line has been damaged under Amelia Island Parkway causing a sink hole between Arbor Drive and Sable Palm Road. The water provider for this area, Nassau Amelia Utilities, has a contractor on the way to access the situation and make emergency repairs. We anticipate that a road closure will be necessary in order to make the repairs but that information is not known at this time. Technicians from Nassau Amelia Utilities are placing a steel traffic plate over the hole so that traffic can continue for now.

There will be additional information to follow regarding any potential road closure and/or detour, however if you have questions related to this issue in the meantime, please contact Nassau Amelia Utilities at (904) 530-6450.

Amelia River-to-Sea Trail (Simmons Road Multi-use Trail) Open House

Event:
Nassau County, the City of Fernandina Beach and Element Engineering Group will be hosting an Open House on March 2, 2017 from 5pm to 7pm at the American Beach Community Center to discuss the Amelia River-to-Sea Trail (Simmons Road Multi-use Trail) project. Element Engineering Group has completed the 30% plan design and needs additional public input to complete their work. Anyone interested in the project is encouraged to attend the Open House to review the plans, provide comments and ask questions. We look forward to seeing you there!

Project Description:
The River-to-Sea Trail is a 2.1 mile long separated asphalt trail with a varying width of 8’ to 10’ running from the Atlantic Ocean to the Inter-Costal Waterway (Amelia River) via the Crane Island Trail at the Ybor Alvarez Sports Complex. The trail will be located within the rights-of-way of Simmons Road and Bailey Road. The Amelia River-to-Sea Trail (Simmons Road Multi-use Trail) is centrally located and ideally situated on Amelia Island to provide a highly desired and much needed east/west corridor for non-vehicular travel. The proposed trail will serve both commuter and leisure users and ultimately reduce vehicular miles traveled on Amelia Island by providing connectivity with existing intersecting non-vehicular facilities located on the Amelia Island Parkway, 14th Street, Will Hardee Road, and Fletcher Avenue (all north/south corridors). This project will connect numerous residential developments to a wide variety of retail, service, and recreational opportunities. Notably, the pristine beaches of Amelia Island, the resort and dining amenities of south Amelia Island, the retail and service opportunities of central Amelia Island, the Ybor Alvarez Sports Complex, and the entrance to Crane Island.
