Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for New Cooperative Extension Office

5/25/2022

Nassau County, Florida, May 25, 2022 – On Friday, June 10, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., the Board of County Commissioners will host a Ribbon Cutting in celebration of the completion of the new County Extension Office located at 85831 Miner Road, Yulee, FL 32097.

The Board of County Commissioners broke ground on this project on May 15, 2019.  All construction work has been done in-house by Facilities Maintenance staff consisting of over 1,800 man-hours and resulting in significant savings to the County.

Upon completion, this new 2,000 square foot facility will serve as the administrative office for the County Extension staff and will feature classrooms for horticulture, natural resources, agriculture, 4-H Youth Development, and family consumer classes and training rooms for the master gardener volunteers and extension agents. The property will also feature demonstration gardens, a nature trail with learning stations, an orchard, and an aquatic pond for pond maintenance training.

At the May 15, 2019 groundbreaking event, an announcement was made that the facility would be called the “Rebecca L. Jordi Cooperative Extension Office” in honor of Extension Director Rebecca L. Jordi who spent countless hours advocating for a new facility for Extension services. Unfortunately, Ms. Jordi passed away on July 31, 2020, however having the facility named after her will ensure that she will always be remembered for her great passion for agriculture and horticulture and for all her efforts in bringing this project to fruition.

Members of the public are invited to attend and participate in this celebration.

The Smith Lever Act of 1914 established the Cooperative Extension Service as a partnership between land grant colleges nationwide, including the University of Florida and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in order to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public through educational programs.
The Nassau County Extension is a joint partnership between the University of Florida and the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners and has been in operation since 1915.

5/25/22 @ 10:00 a.m. - Two employees of the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners have been selected for the News-Leader's inaugural 40 Under 40 class. In the today's paper, Scott J. Bryan, Editor for the News-Leader, and Amanda Ream, Publisher for the Nassau County Record, are quoted as stating, "We asked readers to nominate the county's community-driven young adults, whether rising entrepreneurs, educators, creators or motivators. We wanted to highlight the young adults who have a passion to achieve and leave a footprint on the local landscape. The decisions made now affect future generations, so we must envision a brighter, better tomorrow, which is the goal of many members of this first class".

The Board of County Commissioners is pleased to employ two of these young professionals. County Manager, Taco Pope, has served Nassau County in various capacities since December 2005. Firefighter/Lieutenant, Adam Bolger, has served Nassau County as a member of Nassau County Fire Rescue since June 2008.

We are proud of both and feel fortunate to have them representing the County. We would like to congratulate them, as well as all the other award recipients for their achievement. Thank you for leading the way and dedicating your talents to making our community a better place to live.

Board Adopts Interim Strategic Plan

5/24/2022

Picture
5/24/22 @ 4:05 p.m. - At the Wednesday, May 18, 2022 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved Resolution No. 2022-107 adopting an Interim Strategic which provides a path forward in facilitating a more resilient, equitable, sustainable, and prosperous Nassau County. A review of the County's foundational studies/documents identified four high-level strategic priorities that capture the overarching values, primary objectives, and substantive concerns of the greater community. These four priorities will shape decision making and provide guide-rails as we progress through an ever-evolving environment:

  • Quality-of-Life & Quality-of-Place [Vibrancy]
  • Environmental Stewardship & Resiliency
  • Fiscal Stewardship & Economic Prosperity
  • Governance & Leadership

"It is with great excitement and expectation that I present Nassau County's first step towards adopting a strategic plan. While Nassau has maintained a Comprehensive Plan, a State mandated long-range planning document, the elements of local government that report directly to the Board of County Commissioners have never created an organizational strategic plan that sets a definable course, expectations, and fearless targets. The purpose of this document is to serve as an interim step towards the creation of a comprehensive 5-year strategic plan that charts a collective path forward in the shared-pursuit of the common good and creation of lasting public value". - County Manager, Taco E. Pope

Community Surveys Launched Related to Current Beach Enhancement Initiatives

5/23/2022

5/23/22 @ 12:00 p.m.

The Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau has released two community surveys related to 1) beach park harmonization; and 2) tourism and destination development initiatives.

Nassau County beaches are enjoyed by ALL residents. As such, it is important that ALL residents respond to these surveys to make their voices heard during the planning process.

The surveys will remain open through June 30th.

Initiative #1: Beach Park Harmonization Project

The CUVB seeks to harmonize and enhance the visitor's experience at Amelia Island's seven main beach parks: North Beach, Main Beach, Seaside Park, Peters Point, Burney Park, Scott Road Beach Access, and the Southend Beach Access. Building on previous studies and existing guidelines, the Beach Harmonization Project aims to modernize and better equip these parks to better serve the local community, as well as visitors to the area.

A presentation was made Katie Poppel of the firm EDSA at the May 18, 2022 Board of County Commissioners meeting. Ms. Poppel stated, "The objective of this is the idea of harmonization. How do these 7 parks fit together and create that cohesive space? A space where a resident or visitor can visit any park and find a set of "pedestrian comfort" enhancements including seating, waste receptacles, pavilions, beach access". The May 18th presentation can be found here with the presentation listed under "Tab C".

Initiative #2: The "Nassau Next" Tourism and Destination Development Project

This project will create a comprehensive roadmap for the future of Nassau County and its tourism economy. Positioning new areas of the county will help capture a greater share of tourism spending while maintaining momentum on Amelia Island. This project will deliver a clear 10-year plan for creating jobs, expanding the economy, and improving quality of life for visitors and residents.
