American Beach: Honoring the Past, Investing in the Future

12/30/2025

12/30/25 @ 5:00 p.m.

In September 2025, the Board of County Commissioners completed the American Beach Water and Sewer Conversion Project, fulfilling the community’s decades-long desire for public water and sewer services. This long-awaited milestone was achieved through collaboration with the Florida Government Utility Authority, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which worked together to secure funding for this critical infrastructure while minimizing the financial burden on property owners. More than a modern upgrade, the project represented a commitment to public health, equity, and the long-term sustainability of the American Beach community.

To understand the importance of this achievement, one must look to the origins of American Beach itself. Founded in 1935 by Abraham Lincoln Lewis, Florida’s first Black millionaire, American Beach was created as a place where Black families could gather, rest, and build memories during an era of segregation. It quickly became a cultural refuge rooted in resilience, pride, and self-determination, where generations returned year after year, forming a close-knit community bound by shared history and tradition.

That rich legacy has been explored and celebrated in our new three-part video series, Beneath Our Feet – The American Beach Project, which highlights American Beach’s history, community, and ongoing legacy, and tells the stories of founders and families, of struggles and triumphs, and of a community that has always looked both to its past and its future.

Multimedia Communications Manager Omari Matlock stated, "It has been a profound honor to help capture and produce a truly historic video series, an ongoing story that stretches back more than 90 years. These historic moments were shared with me by powerful yet humble pillars of the community, whose lived experiences carry both truth and legacy. The beauty of what American Beach stands for has truly inspired me, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to help preserve a piece of such a special place's history."

Watch and learn how the American Beach Water and Sewer Conversion Project will have lasting impact for generations to come.

12/23/25 @ 10:00 a.m.

At the Wednesday, December 17, 2025 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners recognized two County employees for their outstanding years of dedicated service to Nassau County.

Celebrating 25 years of service this month is Scott Lear, a Truck Driver with the Road Department. Road Director Darren Marsh shared that Scott was originally hired as a Maintenance Helper before advancing into his current role. “Scott is now one of our lead, senior truck drivers, and we rely on him to train future truck drivers,” Marsh said. “He is a true team player and is always one of the first to step up when help is needed in other areas. That kind of effort and dedication is hard to find, and I appreciate Scott for all he has done.”

Also recognized was Youth Librarian Michelle Forde, who is celebrating 20 years of service to Nassau County. Director of Strategic Advancement Brandy Carvalho highlighted Michelle’s tremendous impact on the community, noting that she facilitates at least five youth programs each week. That's more than 260 programs annually! “Over 20 years, that’s 5,200 times Michelle has introduced children to curiosity, learning, and often their very first library card,” Carvalho said. “She has inspired Nassau County youth to become lifelong learners. It takes a special person to do this work, and we are grateful she has chosen to share her talents with Nassau County.”

The Board of County Commissioners extends its sincere appreciation to Scott Lear and Michelle Forde for their years of dedicated service, professionalism, and commitment to serving the residents of Nassau County. Their contributions have made a lasting, positive impact on the community, and the Board thanks them for their continued service to Nassau County and its citizens.

County Road 121 Temporary Road Closure and Detour Information

12/19/2025

12/19/25 @ 1:15 p.m.

Beginning Monday, January 7, 2026, the segment of County Road 121 between Horseshoe Circle and Horseshoe Circle South will be closed to accommodate work associated with the County Road 121 Resurfacing and Safety Improvements Project.

Traffic may use Horseshoe Circle as a detour as shown here:

To access the north side of the closure:
  • Horseshoe Circle South → Horseshoe Circle West → Horseshoe Circle
To access the south side of the closure:
  • Horseshoe Circle → Horseshoe Circle West → Horseshoe Circle South

Please note a portion of the roadway on this detour is an unpaved, dirt road.

The closure is expected to last approximately 120 days, weather permitting.

Outside of the full closure area, County Road 121 will remain open with one-way alternating traffic lane closures, temporary traffic signals, narrowed travel lanes, and reduced speeds. Motorists should expect delays and are encouraged to use caution while traveling through the construction zone. Thru traffic and large truck traffic are encouraged to consider alternate routes that avoid the detour and work zones to reach their destination.

For questions or additional information, please contact William Yaun, Work Site Traffic Supervisor for Anderson Columbia, Inc., at (352) 231-3527.

We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation during construction on County Road 121. These improvements are being made to enhance roadway safety, improve driving conditions, and provide long-term benefits for our community. Thank you for your understanding as crews work to complete this project as efficiently and safely as possible.

Update Regarding Road Closure on CR 121

12/11/2025

12/12/25 @ 7:00 p.m. - As previously announced, Anderson Columbia is conducting work related to the future resurfacing of County Road 121, including the extension and replacement of culverts at various locations within the project area. To better serve the community, the project team has developed and approved a change in the temporary traffic control plan for the closure taking place just just north of Ground Hog Place to south of Horseshoe Circle.

On Friday, December 12, 2025 at 9:00 a.m., the project team will begin installing a new temporary traffic control device that will allow for alternating, single-lane closures utilizing temporary traffic signals. This traffic plan is in lieu of the previously proposed detour which was causing additional travel time for motorists.

It is anticipated that the traffic control device will be in place by the close of business on December 12th. Once completed, digital signs will be updated to reflect the new traffic control plan. Please continue to utilize the detour until signage and traffic devices are updated.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Work Site Traffic Supervisor William Yaun at 352-231-3527.

Road Closure Notification

12/4/2025

12/4/25 @ 12:00 p.m.

Please be advised that contractor Anderson Columbia Company, Inc. is conducting work related to the future resurfacing of County Road 121, including the extension and replacement of drainage culverts at various locations within the project area.
The contractor recently placed signs notifying residents of a complete closure on CR 121 approximately 0.36 miles north of Ground Hog Place and approximately 0.32 miles south of Horseshoe Circle, with a notation that “local traffic” may pass. Please note that “local traffic” refers only to homeowners who reside between these referenced signs and the complete closure, to allow access and service to their properties. The road is blocked at the point of closure, and no motorists may travel across that point until the project is finished in approximately 60 days.

A detour has been established as follows:
Detour route to access the north side of the closure: US 90 East → US 301 North → CR 119 West
Detour route to access the south side of the closure: CR 119 East → US 301 South → US 90 West

A full closure is required due to removal of the guardrail and other modifications that create hazards for motorists and workers.  The BOCC and the contractor recognize that the detour is causing additional travel time for residents; however, this short-term inconvenience will result in long-term improvements that enhance travel conditions, strengthen infrastructure, and ultimately improve safety for all who use County Road 121.

Resurfacing of County Road 121 from the Duval County line to County Road 119 has been a long-standing priority of the Board of County Commissioners. In 2022, the County was awarded $9 million in Legislative funding to support this project, followed by an additional $9 million grant from FDOT in 2023 to assist with funding the $20.6 million project. The project design was completed by Kimley-Horn in March 2025, and contractors are now making necessary improvements to surrounding infrastructure ahead of the upcoming resurfacing work.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Project Administrator Alan Floyd at 386-389-1645 or via e-mail at [email protected].

It's National Custodian Day. Observed annually on October 2nd, this day is dedicated to showing appreciation to custodians for all their hard work and dedication in maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces and facilities.
