Progress continues as we build on last week’s major milestone of reopening Buccaneer Trail and the north leg of Amelia Island Parkway.

Activities completed the week of May 4, 2026:
  • Continued installation of drainage structures along the southern leg of AIP.
  • Placement of limerock base and preliminary grading on the southern leg of AIP.
  • Embankment grading around the perimeter of the roundabout in preparation for the shared-use path installation.
These important steps are advancing the southern portion of the project while the north side is now open to traffic. The roundabout continues to operate smoothly at the signed 25 mph design speed.

Upcoming Work:
MAER Construction will continue base work, drainage, and path-related grading over the next several weeks.
We appreciate the public's patience as we work to bring these mobility improvements.

Amelia Island Parkway/Buccaneer Trail Roundabout - Weekly Update

4/24/2026

Picture
4/24/26 @ 4:00 p.m.

Excellent progress has been made this week. The contractor and utility owners have worked diligently and expeditiously to advance Phase 2 operations and Buccaneer Trail and the north leg of Amelia Island Parkway are now slated to reopen by Thursday, April 30th! See below for more important details.

Activities Completed This Week:
  • TB Landmark fully completed the gas main relocation
  • MAER Construction continued installation of pipe and drainage inlet structures
  • The double 30” x 19” elliptical cross drain is now fully installed underneath AIP
  • Curb and gutter placement along the AIP north leg and Buccaneer Trail
  • Curb placement began on the interior islands

Upcoming Activities:
  • Paving operations begin this Saturday, April 25th
  • Temporary striping to follow

New Traffic Configuration (Effective Thursday, April 30):
Please be aware that the approach to the roundabout will be signed for its permanent 25 mph design speed. Drivers will notice the horizontal deflection (gentle left or right curves) as you approach the center of the intersection from all directions. This is an intentional traffic-calming feature in the modern FDOT design to naturally slow traffic upon approach to the intersection and improve safety.

Travel will be limited to north/south movements via AIP and Buccaneer Trail.
The south leg of AIP (leading to Fletcher Ave) will remain closed through project completion.

Important Notes:
Future single-lane closures at the roundabout will be required for final feature installations, and a possible full closure for final asphalt friction course placement closer to project completion. These will be announced in advance.

The official posted detour (Fletcher to Sadler Road / Simmons Road) will remain in place for northbound traffic to account for those temporary closures. Full pedestrian access via the shared-use path is not yet available at the roundabout. More information will be shared as it becomes accessible.

Thank you all for your continued patience and cooperation with the detours, your efforts are helping us reach this major milestone safely and on schedule. We’re getting very close to a much safer, modern intersection for our community!

Safe travels, neighbors!

Amelia Island Parkway and Buccaneer Trail Roundabout - Weekly Update

PictureInstallation of a 30x19" elliptical concrete pip to connect roadside swales
4/17/26 @ 3:45 p.m.

Steady progress continues on Phase 2. Utility relocations are advancing smoothly, and we’re now transitioning into the next phase of roadway and drainage work. Thank you for your continued patience and for following the signed detours. Your cooperation is keeping travel times stable and helping the project move forward efficiently.

Key activities completed the week of April 13, 2026:
  • The City of Fernandina Beach successfully completed their water main installation and tie-in on Tuesday, April 14
  • TB Landmark is nearing completion of the 6" steel gas main relocation
  • MAER Construction began installing the double 30” x 19” elliptical concrete pipe underneath Amelia Island Parkway to connect the roadside swales
  • MAER also started mixing and placing stabilization material on Amelia Island Parkway.

Looking Ahead : Week of April 20, 2026:
  • Continued installation of pipe and drainage structures
  • Ongoing subgrade stabilization
  • Preparation for base material and the structural asphalt course.

Traffic Note: Northbound travel times between the Amelia City roundabout and Simmons Road remain consistent with last week’s improved levels.

These steps are bringing us closer to completing the critical utility conflict areas and eventually reopening Buccaneer Trail. We appreciate everyone’s understanding during this important safety improvement project.

How Modern Roundabouts Improve Safety and Efficiency
This project follows the latest Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) modern roundabout standards, which emphasize deflection to naturally slow traffic, reduce crash severity, and improve overall flow compared to traditional signalized intersections.

The Amelia Island Parkway & Buccaneer Trail roundabout features a 120-foot interior width circle diameter. It includes a full, slightly raised, 10’ wide mountable brick paver truck apron. The apron provides extra clearance for larger vehicles such as school buses, fire engines, ambulances, and delivery trucks to navigate comfortably without encroaching on the main circulatory roadway or forcing smaller vehicles off their path. This design ensures navigating the intersection remains reliable while maintaining low speeds for everyday traffic, enhancing safety for all users including pedestrians and cyclists on the shared-use path. Once complete, this roundabout will deliver smoother, safer travel with fewer severe crashes and lower long-term maintenance needs. Information published by the FHWA shows fatal or severe (incapacitating injury) crashes are reduced by 90% or more via modern roundabouts, with some studies showing a 100% decrease in fatal crashes at single-lane roundabouts.

Picture
Aerial photo showing utility relocation area
4/13/26 @ 5:00 p.m.

Significant progress continues on Phase 2 operations. Our teams made solid advancements last week while keeping safety and traffic flow top priorities.

Key Activities Completed the Week of April 6th:
  • TB Landmark continued welding and pressure testing of the 6" steel gas main
  • The gas main has been shifted approximately 80 feet east with a 90-degree tie-in 115 feet south of the roundabout center
  • The City of Fernandina Beach successfully installed their water main relocation
  • The existing 90-degree bend in the water main has been shifted approximately 150 feet south of the roundabout center.
These vital utility relocations ensure the entire intersection will remain accessible to north and southbound traffic should any future utility maintenance or upgrades be required.

Looking Ahead – Week of April 13th:
  • City of Fernandina Beach will connect the relocated water main to the existing line on Tuesday, April 14th  — some customers may experience a short water outage (they have already been notified)
  • TB Landmark will continue gas main reconnection activities, with completion scheduled for Saturday, April 18th
  • MAER Construction will advance storm pipe and drainage structure installations
  • Florida Public Utilities (FPU) will begin boring their electric distribution lines and marking vault locations.

Positive Traffic Update:
Thanks to continued coordination with the City of Fernandina Beach on maintenance of traffic, we’ve seen a substantial improvement,  over a 50% on average reduction in peak afternoon northbound travel times between the Amelia City roundabout and Simmons Road. This improvement is largely due to more drivers following the signed Sadler Road and Simmons Road detours. Your patience and cooperation are making a real difference in keeping traffic moving. Thank you for being considerate of fellow motorists and residents during these important safety upgrades.

We’ll continue sharing updates as we move closer to reopening Buccaneer Trail. Safe travels, neighbors!

Amelia Island Parkway & Buccaneer Trail Roundabout - Phase Two Update

4/6/2026

Picture
4/6/26 @ 5:15 p.m.

We know construction at the Amelia Island Parkway & Buccaneer Trail roundabout can be frustrating, especially during Phase 2.

We are actively working with our local law enforcement partners and the City of Fernandina Beach to improve travel times for the northbound afternoon commute from the south end of the island. Based on field observations and monitoring, southbound travel to the south end along Fletcher has seen limited delays and is working as intended.

This is a friendly reminder: Using the posted detour routes provides a real benefit for everyone. We’ve added more signage and message boards to help guide all drivers in the area.

When everyone follows the signed paths:
  • The primary detour via Sadler Road keeps northbound traffic flowing smoothly. The roundabout at Sadler and Fletcher allows continuous movement.
  • The Simmons Road / 14th Street alternate often provides quicker access for local residents in that area.

Right now, drivers attempting to turn left onto Bill Melton Road from northbound Fletcher are creating long backups. These add 20+ extra minutes during afternoon peaks (1–6 pm), with queues sometimes extending south past the AIP/Fletcher intersection all the way to,  and beyond,  the Harris Teeter area.

The more drivers who use the signed detours, the better it gets for everyone:
  • A 30% increase in drivers using the primary Sadler Road detour can reduce travel time by up to 6 minutes from points south of the AIP/Fletcher intersection.
  • A 50% increase can provide up to a 10-minute reduction in travel times.
That means:
  •  Less time sitting in traffic
  • Fewer delays getting home, to work, or to the beach
  • Safer intersections for all motorists and pedestrians
  • Faster progress on a safer, modern roundabout that will benefit our community for years to come.

Phase 2 Construction Progress Activities completed the week of March 30:
  • AIP roadway surface milled for repaving and demolition of areas outside the future alignment
  • TB Landmark completed pre-installation pipe welds for the Chesapeake Gas line relocation
  • TB Landmark performed pressure testing
  • TB Landmark began drilling for the new gas main along the east and south sides of the intersection

Activities scheduled for the week of April 6:
  • City of Fernandina Beach begins relocation of their water main
  • TB Landmark continues gas main relocation activities

Once all utilities are safely relocated and backfilled, MAER Construction will install the new pipe and drainage structures at the former utility conflict points and continue working toward reopening Buccaneer Trail.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation! Every driver who follows the signed detour helps keep traffic moving for the whole island. As we make additional improvements to the detour route and traffic flow, we’ll continue to share updates.
