2/15/23 @ 2:30 p.m. - In January 2022, County Manager Taco Pope, instituted new Customer Care Standards to govern both internal and external interactions and to create a more positive work environment. Part of this initiative includes an Employee Recognition Program in which employees can nominate co-workers who have demonstrated Nassau County's Customer Care Standards and/or has provided exceptional performance beyond established duties and responsibilities.

We are pleased to announce that our new Employee of the Quarter is David Hearn. David has worked for Nassau County in various capacities since March 1999, beginning as a Maintenance Helper, and working his way up to Assistant Road Director.

David is hard working, devoted and passionate about serving the County. He has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to develop a new Apprenticeship Program for the Road Department so that Road Department personnel have a clear, defined career path with opportunities to advance. This program will ensure that employees obtain the skills needed to be successful in their positions and help them excel both professionally and financially. And true to David's commitment to success, Davis is working to provide a similar program for the fleet/mechanic division as well.

These are just a few examples of David's service and dedication to the County and its residents. If you see David, be sure to congratulate him on being our Employee of the Quarter!

Maintenance of Traffic Training

2/8/2023

2/8/23 @ 8:45 a.m. - Late last week, several new employees of the Road Department participated in Maintenance of Traffic training to learn about guidelines related to temporary traffic control during a construction project. During this training, employees focused on flagging operations and were able to test their knowledge in a mock work zone set up at the Hilliard Road Department site.

Flagger training is one of several areas covered in the Road Department's new hire training. Other training activities for new hires include learning to operate small power equipment such as chainsaws, pole saws, and other tools needed for construction maintenance, as well as overview of the County's Safety Policy.

The County enhanced its new hire training last year to provide additional guidance to entry-level Road Department personnel. During the 21/22 Fiscal Year, the County also established an Apprenticeship Program designed to give Road Department employees a clear defined career path with opportunities to advance quickly. These individuals can begin their career as a Maintenance Helper and within 3-4 years, advance to a Maintenance Operator with the ability to operate heavy equipment. This is the perfect opportunity for someone wishing to learn a trade and make a career in Nassau County.

If you have any questions, please contact Assistance Road Director, David Hearn, at (904) 530-6175 or via e-mail at dhearn@nassaucountyfl.com.

Chip Seal Program Improves Public Safety on Roads

11/4/2022

The Nassau County Road Department is happy to announce it has completed its scheduled list of chip sealed roads for the 2021 and 2022 fiscal years.

Twenty-two dirt roads totaling 29,145 feet (roughly 5.5 miles) were upgraded to a newly paved surface utilizing the chip seal process. When the repetitive maintenance of dirt roads becomes timely and costly and/or driver safety is compromised, chip seal is a great option because it’s similar to asphalt in durability and appearance, but much less expensive.

The chip seal surface treatment consists of an application of heated asphalt liquid, followed by a layer of crushed rock with a roller to create a smooth surface. Chip seal roads enhance public safety by providing good skid resistance, an anti-glare surface during wet weather, and an increased reflective surface for night driving.

During adoption of the Fiscal Year 22/23 budget, the Board allocated $900,000 for the Chip Seal Program. This will allow an additional fifteen roads totaling 17,975 feet to be resurfaced this Fiscal Year. Roads identified for chip seal this Fiscal Year include:

  • Milton Road
  • Dawson Road
  • Boyd Road
  • D. Fouraker Road
  • Middle Road
  • Lawhon Road
  • Debbie Road
  • Howard Road
  • Oelsner Drive
  • Wilder Boulevard
  • Arbor Lane
  • Seymour Lane
  • Nassau River Road
  • Freeman Road
  • Myrtice Road

We want to thank the citizens of Nassau County for their patience during the preparation process. We would also like to thank our County Commissioners, (District 1) John F. Martin, (District 2) Aaron C. Bell, (District 3) Jeff Gray, (District 4) Thomas R. Ford, (District 5) Klynt A. Farmer, for their support and allocating funding for this initiative.

If you have any questions, please contact the Nassau County Road Department at (904) 530-6175.
