Sea turtles are more than just a beloved sight on our beaches, they play an important role in keeping coastal and ocean ecosystems healthy!

Sea turtles are considered a keystone species, meaning their presence can have a significant impact on the health and balance of their environment. Here are five ways they contribute:

1. They help keep marine ecosystems in balance.
Different species help control the animals and plants they feed on. Hawksbill turtles eat sponges that can compete with corals for space, while leatherbacks help keep jellyfish populations in check.

2. Nesting turtles help nourish our beaches.
Not every egg will hatch, and not every hatchling will make it to the ocean. The eggs, shells and other organic material left behind provide nutrients that can benefit coastal vegetation and the beach ecosystem.

3. Hatchlings are part of the food web.
Although we want every hatchling to reach the water, they are also an important natural food source for birds, fish and other wildlife. That’s part of the complex coastal food web—and one reason nesting season is so important to so many species.

4. Sea turtles benefit people, too.
Sea turtle conservation supports coastal communities through ecotourism, research, education and wildlife viewing. For many of us, simply seeing a sea turtle in the wild creates a lasting connection to our coast.

5. Green turtles help maintain healthy seagrass beds.
Green sea turtles graze on seagrass, helping maintain healthy seagrass ecosystems that provide habitat and food for many other marine species. Healthy seagrass beds also play an important role in storing carbon.

Here in Nassau County, our nesting beaches are part of this larger coastal ecosystem. Every nest, hatchling and adult turtle contributes to the health and diversity of our coastline.

So the next time you see a sea turtle, or simply see a protected nest on the beach, remember that you’re looking at an important part of a much bigger ecosystem.

Weekly Project Update: Amelia Island Parkway & Buccaneer Trail Roundabout Week of August 3, 2026

Work This Week:

• Partial asphalt placement for the shared-use path and the bicycle curb ramps
• Continued grading
• Ongoing conduit installation for streetlights
• Minor utility work. 

These activities build on prior conduit, grading, and drainage preparations and move the project closer to completing the multi-use path network and permanent lighting.

Upcoming Work:
The remainder of the asphalt placement for the shared-use path, along with sodding, is expected during the week of August 17. Opening of the pedestrian facilities (sidewalk and shared-use path) is anticipated shortly thereafter.

We continue to sequence remaining work carefully to protect finished surfaces and deliver a durable, high-quality result. Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as these final elements are completed.

Current opportunities include:

Affordable Housing Advisory Committee 
Reviews local housing policies and recommends strategies to increase the availability of affordable housing.

Amelia Island Tourist Development Council (Tourist Industry/Tax-Paying Representative) 
Advises on the promotion and development of tourism and the use of Tourist Development Tax revenues.

Construction Board of Adjustments and Appeals (Construction-Related Representatives – 2 vacancies) 
Hears appeals and considers matters related to the County's construction codes and regulations.

Planning and Zoning Board (At-Large Representative)
Reviews land use, zoning, and development proposals and makes recommendations to the Board of County Commissioners.

Today marks the start of Early Voting in Nassau County for the August 18, 2026 Primary Election.

Registered voters can cast their ballot during the Early Voting period, which runs August 6 through August 15.
Today is also the deadline to request a Vote-by-Mail ballot. Requests must be received by the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 6.

Want to build healthier soil and naturally reduce weeds in your garden?

Join Nassau County's UF/IFAS Extension Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent, Dave Hébert, on Thursday, August 7, for a hands-on program exploring how cover crops, compost, mulch, and pollinator-friendly plants work together to create healthier, more productive gardens.

Participants will tour the demonstration garden in Callahan, learn about selecting and managing cover crops, discover the benefits of composting and worm bins, and see sustainable gardening practices in action.

Whether you're a home gardener, farmer, or simply interested in improving your landscape, this free educational program offers practical tips you can put to use at home.

The new traffic signal at US-17 and William Burgess Boulevard is now operational.

The signal is now controlling northbound and southbound traffic on US-17, as well as traffic entering and exiting William Burgess Boulevard.

Please note: Hornets Drive remains closed, but we expect it to open before the start of the school year, providing an additional route to school.

Please help keep everyone safe by obeying all traffic signs, electronic message boards, lane closure markers, and detours. If a roadway is closed, it is closed for a reason and should not be used as a travel lane. Driving around barricades or moving traffic control devices creates unsafe conditions for everyone.
