Transit Study Update

10/25/2024

10/25/24 @ 9:30 a.m. - Nassau County partnered with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) to update the 2015 Transit Study. The 2024 update analyzed demographic, economic, infrastructure, industry and growth trend changes that impact public transportation services and needs. The process included a robust community engagement component that included in-person and online surveys, appearances at public events, public workshops, interviews with stakeholders, and the establishment of a Steering Committee comprised of community and business leaders.

The result is a plan for the provision of public transportation services with recommendations for near, medium, and long-term improvements. The Nassau County Transit Study - 2024 Update will serve as a road map and planning tool for transit investment in the continued implementation and development of a multi-modal transportation system to provide for the safe and efficient movement of people and goods and the use of alternative modes of transportation. As the study provides recommendations, the actual implementation is contingent upon supporting partners (JTA, municipalities, County and other community partners) and available Federal, State, and local grants and funding.

At the Wednesday, October 16 meeting, JTA provided a presentation with the results of the 2024 Transit Study. Alexander Traversa, Director of Planning & Sustainability, stated, "
The stakeholders identified four key themes for improving transportation in Nassau County. First and foremost that’s building awareness of existing transportation services; addressing the urgent need to provide workforce transportation to major employment centers; improving connections to the Jacksonville region, including the airport and the downtown Jacksonville; and and enhancing transportation for visitors to  Amelia Island." Mr. Traversa followed by presenting 12 recommendations that have been split into short-term-medium-term and long-term scenarios and a timeline in which each could be achieved. He added, "the recommendations from the study really address the community's needs for expanded access to destinations across the region, and increased visibility for transit services for Nassau County residents and visitors."

The BOCC subsequently approved Resolution No. 2024-157 adopting the 2024 Transit Study. This document will serve as a planning tool for the implementation and development of a multi-modal County transportation System.

8/14/24 @ 11:45 a.m.

Over the past year, Nassau County and the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) have conducted a study on public transportation and gathered input from the community through a series of surveys, open houses and appearances at local events. The purpose of the study was to analyze existing conditions and the changing landscape of the County, in order to develop a plan to enhance transit service within the County, as well as exploring connections to neighboring transportation providers in the region. The outcome of the study will be a set of short-term and long-term recommendations for transportation investments and strategies.

In the first two surveys, the community helped JTA identify key transportation priorities and challenges. They have listened carefully and incorporated your feedback into the initial stages of their planning process. Now, as they progress toward finalizing the Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP), they need your help once again to refine the strategies and ensure they align with the community's vision for a safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation network.

The third and final survey is now available and focuses on specific proposals and initiatives that have been developed based on the community's earlier feedback and detailed technical analyses. Your responses will once again guide JTA in prioritizing projects, allocating resources, and making informed decisions that will shape the transportation landscape for years to come.

Thank you in advance for your participation.

5/22/2024

5/22/24 @ 2:30 p.m. - The Northeast Florida Regional Council (NEFRC) is seeking the public's input on two initiatives.

The first is the 2024 Coordinated Mobility Plan Survey. Input received will help planners better understand the community's transportation needs and obstacles, and will help them to identify solutions to reduce mobility gaps and improve transportation services through the region of Northeast Florida.

The second survey, Customer Roadway Safety Survey, is designed to help the  NEFRC and Jacksonville Transit Authority (JTA) gain insight on the community's experiences related to roadway safety and JTA Services. The survey is part of JTA's commitment to enhancing safety on roadways, specifically for JTA services, as they strive to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries.

Each survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete. Both surveys are open through the end of July. If you have any questions, please contact Summer Jones, Transportation Disadvantaged Coordinator of the Northeast Florida Regional Council at (904) 279-0880 ext. 124 or via e-mail at [email protected].

4/10/24 @ 10:00 a.m.

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) in partnership with Nassau County is conducting a study of public transportation opportunities in the region. The purpose of the project is to analyze the existing conditions and the changing landscape of the County in order to develop a plan to enhance transit service within the County, as well as exploring connections to neighboring transit providers in the region. Public participation is an important part of developing study updates. A survey was offered from September 2023 - January 2024 and a lot of great feedback was received. At this time, the TPO is seeking public input for a second online survey. Though both surveys relate to public transportation, the questions are different in this new survey. Your input will play a crucial role in shaping the future of transit services and enhancing the overall mobility options available to a community.

To access the survey, click here. The deadline to complete the survey is Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
