You Moved Your Elderly Parents to Nassau County... Now What?

11/24/2020

11/24/20 @ 9:45 a.m. - Have you recently moved your elderly parents to Nassau County but are unsure what steps to take now that they are here? The County Extension Office offers the following:

  1. Contact Social Security 1 (800) 772-1213 to update their Florida address; bank account information (social security checks are typically direct deposit)

2. Find out what type of Medicare Coverage they have: Original vs Medicare Advantage Plan
  • If they have Original Medicare, you do not need to do anything
  • If they have a Medicare Advantage Plan you will need to switch either to Original Medicare or an Advantage Plan based on new zip code
  • Contact local Medical Providers to inquire if they are accepting new Original Medicare patients and ask what Medicare Advantage Plans, they accept

3. Contact their Medicare Drug Plan to let them know they have moved to Nassau County and inquire if they need to change to a different plan due to relocation

4. Get a list of their medications (name, dosage and quantity)

6. Find out if they have a Medicare Supplemental Plan “Medigap Policy” and notify the policy of their new address.  Moving to a new zip code can impact the amount of their monthly premium.
7. Learn about their financial situation – if they have little liquid assets and modest income they may qualify for State and Federal Subsidy programs to pay for Medicare premiums, drug costs, medical and hospital co-pays and deductibles

8. Contact Nassau County Council on Aging (904)261-0701 for information on Case Management, Home Health Care, Subsidized Housing, Transportation, etc.

9. Consider having Power of Attorney (form that is completed by you and your parent and notarized) so you can speak on their behalf to medical providers, pharmacy, Social Security, community agencies, etc.

10. If they are receiving food assistance and/or Medicaid from another state, inform that state they have moved to Florida.  You will need to apply for food assistance and Medicaid with the State of Florida through the DCF Access Florida website https://dcf-access.dcf.state.fl.us/access

If you would like assistance with Medicare, Medicaid and/or Food Assistance please contact the University of Florida, Nassau County Extension Service, Meg McAlpine (904)570-5713 for Unbiased information.
"Extension programs are open to all persons without regard to race, color, sex, age, disability, religion, or national origin."

Public Health Appreciation Day

11/23/2020

11/23/20 @ 1:30 p.m. - On Wednesday, November 18, 2020, the Board approved Resolution No. 2020-184, proclaiming November 23, 2020 as "Public Health Appreciation Day" in Nassau County, Florida.

Public health focuses on improving and protecting community health and well-being, with an emphasis on prevention among large groups. This work is achieved by promoting healthy lifestyles, researching disease and injury prevention, and by detecting, preventing and responding to infectious diseases.

In addition to provide medical services, public health officials keep communities healthy through education, disaster relief and enduring communities have clean water to drink.

Health care workers face a higher risk of exposure to infectious diseases, especially in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way health care is provided and added psychological distress to individuals working in the health care field.

Today, we recognize the tremendous impact public health workers have on our citizens and environment and extend our gratitude for all they do for our community.

Beware of Marketing Ploy Related to Water Testing

Nassau County, Florida, November 23, 2020 – The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office has received reports from residents indicating that water testing kits have been left in or near their mailboxes. Some of these residents have expressed that they felt they were required to complete and return them.

Please be advised that Nassau County Government has not distributed these tests. This appears to be a marketing ploy from private water treatment suppliers who hope to sell water purifying kits to homeowners.

It’s important to note that all water service providers are mandated by the Safe Water Drinking Act to publish a Drinking Water Quality Report annually on their websites. To review those reports, you would need to visit the website of the water utility that services your address or contact them by phone and request that they send you a copy.

Property owners who utilize a well can visit the Florida Department of Health’s website at www.floridahealth.gov/environmental-health/private-well-testing to learn more about well water quality. If you are concerned that you have an issue, you can also contact your local Nassau County Health Department’s Environmental Health Division at (904) 875-6100.
