Turtle Talk Tuesday: More About Genetic Testing

8/29/2023

8/29/23 @ 8:15 a.m.

It's turtle nesting season! From May 1st - October 31st each year, sea turtles visit Amelia Island beaches to nest, and it's up to all of us to make their visit as safe as possible! During this turtle nesting season, we are introducing "Turtle Talk Tuesday". Every Tuesday, we will provide you with facts about our local turtle population and what is being done to protect them.

Message from the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch

Under Marine Turtle Permit #088, the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch is instructed to collect one loggerhead egg from each nest for genetic research. Much can be learned about sea turtle nesting behavior and the number of nests individual turtles lay each nesting season. It was determined many years ago, that NE Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina loggerheads share the same nesting habitat and are members of a specific nesting family. The genetic history of the turtles identified below, give us an idea of how nesting locations vary among turtles in this family.

Local State of Emergency Declared

8/29/2023

8/29/23 @ 9:00 a.m.

Executive Order No. 2023-151 has been issued declaring a local State of Emergency in preparation of Tropical Storm Idalia.

Florida Statutes, Section 252.38, states that “safeguarding the life and property of (the County’s) citizens is an innate responsibility of the governing body of each political subdivision of the State,” and further grants the County the power to provide a State of Emergency for the health and safety of persons and property”. The State of Emergency will apply to all territory within the legal boundaries of Nassau County, including the unincorporated and incorporated areas.

Declaring a local State of Emergency allows your government officials quick access to resources to help manage a crisis until things return to normal. A State of Emergency also helps government officials take extra measures to protect the public, trigger anti-price gouging laws, and most importantly, seek State or Federal funding for disaster response and reimbursement of funds exhausted on things such as overtime costs and purchase of supplies and equipment needed to manage the emergency.

Nassau County is continuing to monitor the situation closely and are in frequent communication with the National Hurricane Center and local partners to ensure we are ready for any impacts that may come. Please continue to remain vigilant and follow public safety announcements. If you haven't already, please be sure to sign up for emergency alerts so you can be notified of important issues related to the storm.

If you have any questions, please contact Nassau County Emergency Management at (904) 548-0900.
