Health Officials Issue Rabies Alert

12/22/22 @ 8:30 a.m. - The Florida Department of Health in Nassau County (DOH-Nassau) has issued a rabies alert for the Yulee area in response to a raccoon that tested positive. The alert will remain in place for 60 days. During this time, residents are urged to ensure that pets and live-stock are up to date on vaccinations and to not let pets run freely.

Holiday Door Decorating Contest

12/21/22 @ 1:40 p.m. - Departments under the Board of County Commissioners were challenged with their first Holiday Door Decorating Contest this season. A total of 8 departments participated to help spread Christmas cheer and all were so creative and festive! Below are all the entries.

Employee Recognized for Years of Service

12/21/22 @ 2:50 p.m. - At today's meeting, the Board of County Commissioners recognized Engineer Edward McLarty on 35 years of service. 

Mr. McLarty currently serves the residents from Nassau County Fire Rescue Station 20. In addition to responding to emergency calls for service, Mr. McLarty is an apparatus operator who is responsible for the safe operation of our vehicles and ensuring that the vehicles are well-stock with supplies needed for an emergency call. 

We appreciate Engineer McLarty and commend him on his service and dedication to Nassau County and its residents.

County Participates in Leadership Nassau's Government Day

12/21/22 @ 10:00 a.m. - We are honored to have participated in Leadership Nassau, Class 22's Government and Policy Day last week.

The class began their day with a Touch-a-Truck event where they learned all about the County's new Animal Services truck, ladder truck, rescue unit, fire engine, vacuum truck, road grader, and bucket truck. Later, they convened in the County's Commission Chambers where they heard from Elected Officials at the local, state and federal levels, as well as other City and County Government Officials.

We look forward to participating in future Leadership Nassau events and learning more about our future County leaders!

Smoke Detector Battery Replacement

12/20/22 @ 3:05 p.m. - If you are a Nassau County homeowner that needs assistance replacing the batteries in your smoke detector, please contact Nassau County Fires rescue to request a battery replacement. Nassau County Fire Rescue will provide you with the batteries and replace them for you at no-cost (while supplies last). Please note this offer applies to homeowners only (no rentals or commercial properties).

Volunteer Needed for Vacancy on Construction Board of Adjustments & Appeals

12/20/22 @ 2:30 p.m. - The Nassau County Building Department is seeking one (1) public service volunteer to fill a vacancy on the Construction Board of Adjustments & Appeals. 

The purpose of this Board is to hear and decide on appeals of decisions and code interpretations made by the Building Official and the Fire Official relating to the Florida Building Codes, National Electric Codes, Fire Codes and the Unsafe Building Abatement Ordinance.

To be considered, you must meet the following criteria: 
  • Have a construction related occupation (general contracting, residential contracting, and building contracting to include sub-contracting such as mechanical, plumbing, electrical, etc.)
  • Be a resident of Nassau County
  • Cannot be a current Nassau County employee

The Board tentatively meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6pm, unless there are no cases to be heard. Members serve 2 year terms and are required to file financial disclosure annually. Members do not receive compensation for their time and/or travel expenses. 

If you are interested in serving, please submit a resume with a cover letter expressing your desire to serve 
by the close of business on Tuesday, January 17, 2023. The resume should include your name, homes address, phone number, and a current email address. Submit your cover letter and resume to:

Preparing for the Freeze

12/20/22 @ 1:00 p.m.- County Extension Director, Dr. Taylor Clem, has written an article with information on how to prepare your landscape for this week's expected freeze. Topics discussed include types of freezes, covering plants, mulching, irrigation and watering, and more. To view the article, please click here to be directed to the UF/IFAS webpage. 

Note: The County Extension is a joint venture between the University of Florida and the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners made possible by the Smith Lever Act of 1914 that extended outreach programs through land-grant universities to educate rural Americans about advances in agricultural practices and technology.

He also has some exciting news to share about his most recent novel A Mariner’s Tale. The event will take place at the Fernandina Beach Library located at 25 N. 4th Street.

Second Annual Breakfast With Santa

12/18/22 @ 10:30 a.m. - On Saturday, December 17, 2022, Nassau County Parks & Recreation hosted its second annual Breakfast With Santa Event. Santa arrived on the fire truck at approximately 9:00 a.m. and then he and Mrs. Claus made themselves available for photos with all the children. Guests also enjoyed a free pancake and sausage breakfast. Following breakfast, Santa handed out gifts to the children. A great time was had by all!

We appreciate Parks & Recreation Director, Jay Robertson, for putting the event together, as well as all our volunteers who helped cook and serve breakfast to those in attendance. It was a great event and we are already looking forward to next year's.

Yulee Holiday Parade Tomorrow

12/16/22 @ 4:00 p.m. - Please be advised that the Yulee Holiday Parade is scheduled for Saturday, December 17, 2022. The parade will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the beginning of Hamilton Road and continue past Yulee Primary School and the Yulee Sports Complex on Goodbread Road to the end of Pages Dairy Road. This route will require temporary road closures on US 17, Hamilton Road, Goodbread Road and Pages Dairy Road from approximately 9:30-11:00 a.m so please plan accordingly. 

The Board of County Commissioners are proud to be a sponsor of this event and would like to extend their gratitude to the Yulee Holiday Committee for putting this event together every year for the Yulee community to enjoy.
