"Since the spill occurred, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Highway Patrol, and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission are working together to ensure proper response and recovery of debris from the incident. The is a solid waste issue and NOT a hazardous waste concern. Recovering this material is certainly desired and proper disposal is important, however there is no immediate threat. Recovery will be conducted and completed as soon as it can safely and feasibly be done. Once recovery is conducted and property disposed of, there is no anticipated significant environmental impact. Some immediate hard debris removal has already been conducted. The responsible party has been identified and is hiring a contractor to complete the removal and properly disposal of the remaining solid waste. DEP, FHP and FWCC will continue to monitor to ensure this process is completed properly, and as expediently and safely as possible".

We are pleased to announce that Nassau County Animal Control's first quarter adoption rates and live release rates have increased substantially since this time last year. So far this fiscal year, we have had 327 adoptions, up from 170 in December of 2012. Live release rates are at a record high of 96.9%, up from 63%. The steady rise in adoptions and live release rates over the past several years are due to the increase in adoption events and transfers of pets to various rescue groups. Other contributing factors include the Barn Cat Program in which feral cats are captured, spayed/neutered, and returned to farms to help with pest control, as well as spay/neuter services provided by the PetSmart Charities Grant which helped to reduce the number of unwanted pets.

There are some great furry faces waiting to meet you too! Visit the shelter today at 86078 License Road, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034. Standard & Poor's Rating Agency upgraded Nassau County's bond rating on public improvement revenue bonds from an A+ to an AA-. The decision is a reflection of various factors including the County's strong management practices, low debt ratio, budgetary flexibility and very strong reserve balances. Though the County's ratings have improved, Standard & Poor's cautioned the County that continued use of reserves or a change to the County's debt profile could weaken the rating. This puts great pressure on the financing decision for a new Sheriff Administration Building as the only methods available without raising taxes are to use reserves or borrow money to pay for the construction. The BOCC will face difficult decisions as we move forward. To review the report in its entirety, please click here.
