Beware of Tree Removal Scheme

2/25/2022

The Board of County Commissioners has been made aware that a contractor has reached out to homeowners stating that they have unhealthy trees on their property that need to be removed. Residents have reported hiring this business to have the tree(s) removed, only to find out that the trees were actually healthy and that this may have been a scheme to generate business. If you are contacted, please do your due diligence to investigate the matter to ensure that you are not a victim of a scam. Contact an ISA certified arborist to conduct an inspection and to provide a tree risk assessment report prior to making any decision to have it removed. You can search for an ISA Arborist at https://www.treesaregood.org/findanarborist

It's also important to note that Nassau County’s new Tree Protection Ordinance went into effect on February 7, 2022, and it applies to properties in the unincorporated area of Amelia Island (outside of the City limits). This ordinance requires that a tree removal permit must be issued before the removal of a protected tree can occur. Removal of a protected tree without a permit is a violation of the Land Development Code and can result in the enforcement of penalties ranging from mandatary tree replacement, inch-for-inch and/or up to a $15,000 fine. Property owners and contractors can be held jointly liable for violations.

Nassau County’s Tree Ordinance can be found at: https://library.municode.com/fl/nassau_county/codes/code_of_ordinances . See Article 37, Section 37.02.

If you have any questions, please contact County Arborist, Garner Cox, at (904) 530-6300 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Keep Nassau Beautiful to Host Adopt-a-Tree Drive Through Events

2/17/2022

2/17/22 @ 7:15 p.m.

Keep Nassau Beautiful (KNB) volunteers and partner organizations will be holding three free-tree /drive-through events where residents can pick-up one or two free trees to be planted in Nassau County.

Individuals, businesses, and organizations may reserve free trees by completing a few simple steps; reviewing UF/IFAS Extension tree fact sheets for the available species and viewing an educational video led by UF/IFAS Nassau County Extension. Once the on-line learning is complete residents will be ready to complete the reservation form to select their preferred tree species and pick-up location. Completion of the reservation form is required 72 hours prior to the drive-through event. Nassau County proof of residency is required to pick up one or two of our 3-gallon size trees. Residents are also asked to help the tree get its best chance at a healthy long life by following a watering schedule while their tree gets established.

Free tree drive-through events are scheduled as follows:
  • Callahan: Saturday, March 12th at the NEFL Fairgrounds
  • Yulee: Saturday, March 26th at the County Road & Bridge Office on Gene Lasserre Blvd.
  • Fernandina Beach: Saturday, April 2nd at Peck Center

All events will be held between 9am – 11am. Details and reservation form at https://keepnassaubeautiful.org/news-and-events/.

The project is being generously funded through dedicated grants, fundraising activities and private donations. Liberty Landscape Supply sponsors the supply of up to 5-species of trees for the drive-through events. The City of Fernandina Beach funds trees for residents of the City of Fernandina Beach. Up to 500 trees will be distributed and species are available while supplies last.

“Trees are essential to addressing the negative effects of climate change, maintaining wildlife habitat, retaining property values and providing aesthetic beauty,” said Mike Cole, KNB Board Chair, “Keep Nassau Beautiful is honored to host these free tree drive-through events which engage residents in keeping Nassau County green and beautiful for future generations.” For more information [email protected] or 904-261-0165.

Keep Nassau Beautiful, Inc. is working to inspire, educate, and equip individuals, groups, businesses and governments to take action to make Nassau County a place where residents, visitors and wildlife can thrive and experience the beauty of Nassau County. www.keepnassaubeautiful.org

Road Naming Ceremony Held in Honor of Bill Howard

2/15/2022

2/15/22 @ 10:30 a.m.

On, Friday, February 11, 2022, the Board of County Commissioners hosted a road naming ceremony in honor of Facilities Supervisor, Bill Howard, an 18 year employee who passed away in September 2021. In his role as Facilities Supervisor, Bill oversaw the maintenance of all the facilities within the Judicial Complex including the Robert M. Foster Justice Center; the Records Center; the Detention Center; the Sheriff's Administration Building; and the Emergency Operations Center. He was also responsible for ensuring that the HVAC systems functioned properly in all County facilities and served as a mentor to employees as they worked to obtain their HVAC certifications.

Bill was an outstanding employee who often went above and beyond the call of duty. But even more than that, Bill was a great person and friend to many. In an effort to commemorate Bill's service and dedication to the County, the Board voted on November 17 2021, to name the unnamed service road just south of the Robert M. Foster Justice Center "Bill Howard Way" in his honor.

Approximately 75 individuals were in attendance at the sign unveiling event which began with a welcome message by Chairman Aaron Bell. Guest speakers included the Honorable Judge James Daniel, the Honorable Judge Robert Foster; District One County Commissioner, John Martin; and Clerk of Courts, John Crawford. Bill's brother-in-law, Mark Glisson, also spoke about Bill's love of his job with the County and thanked the Board for naming the road in his honor. There were a lot of laughs and a lot of tears as everyone joined together to share stories and memories of Bill. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make this a great event.
