They host field trips and parties and provide the annual sunflower patch and the pumpkin patch and corn maze. Each year, Conner’s A-Maize-ing Acres creates a new design of the corn maze which is unveiled before opening day. We are excited to announce that as part of our year-long Bicentennial, Nassau County has partnered with Conners A-Maize-ing Acres for a special Bicentennial-themed corn maze design. Stay tuned in the coming weeks as we highlight this tedious process and provide sneak peaks of the mystery design. An announcement will be made this summer about a joint unveiling event between Conner’s A-Maize-Ing Acres and the Board of County Commissioners. You won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime (more like 200 years!) design unveiling or the loads of fun waiting for you at Conner’s A-Maize-Ing Acres. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/31/24 @ 10:30 a.m. Attached is the April 2024 edition of the Board of County Commissioner's Newsletter. As you may know, it's turtle nesting season! From May 1st - October 31st each year, sea turtles visit Amelia Island beaches to nest, and it's up to all of us to make their visit as safe as possible! During this turtle nesting season, we are introducing "Turtle Talk Tuesday". Every Tuesday, we will provide you with facts about our local turtle population and what is being done to protect them. This week on Turtle Talk Tuesday, we would like to remind everyone to Keep It Flat! We all love to dig holes at the beach, however did you know that holes can be a danger to both people and sea turtles? People who are walking or running on the beach may not notice the hole and could be injured from falling in. Large holes also create dangerous obstacles that beach rovers and lifeguards must navigate around. Not only does it slow response time, it creates a hazard for their vehicles as well. For sea turtles, these large holes can cause death as nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings can get stuck with no way out. Turtles stuck after sunrise are very likely to die. Below are a few photos provided to us from the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch showing a few of the very large holes they have encountered on our beaches. Enjoy your time at the beach but when you're done, please be sure to fill in your holes before you go. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/24/24 @ 4:00 p.m. - Below are pictures from the week of May 17 - May 24, 2024. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/24/24 @ 2:05 p.m. The County launched Nassau Florida Vision 2050, a collaborative 18-month process involving local leaders, residents, businesses, and stakeholders to shape the future of our community. The project kicked off with extensive community engagement and a review of the County’s plans, studies, and existing conditions. Based on this input, draft “Community Building Blocks” have been developed, outlining core values that will guide recommendations and strategies for the Vision plan. Residents, business owners, and other community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the Building Blocks through a new survey. The survey asks respondents to: ● Identify which values resonate with them. ● Describe their ideas for what these values could look like in practice. Once participants take the quick 5-question survey, they will be entered in a raffle to win a local prize or experience in the County. At the May 15, 2024 meeting, the Board subsequently approved Resolution No. 2024-092 amending the schedule of regular evening meetings, changing the order of business on the agenda, and revising the Rules of Decorum.
Beginning on June 3, 2024, the Board of County Commissioner meetings on the second and fourth Mondays will now start at 5:00 p.m., adjusted from the previous time of 6:00 p.m. Additionally, the Order of Business was modified to move general non-agenda public comment to the end of the meeting. As a reminder, comments can only be for items under the authority of the Board of County Commissioners and the time limit is three minutes. The Rules of Decorum were updated to clarify guidelines for addressing the Board, including that all public participants wishing to address the Board shall complete a speaker card and present the card to the Deputy Clerk prior to the agenda item on which they wish to speak. The revisions also include new language/rules the speaker must follow when addressing the Board including a requirement that comments be directed to the Board as a whole (not individual Commissioners or staff) and that speakers not use abusive or obscene language when addressing the Board. A copy of the revised Resolution can be found at https://nassaufl.co/BOCCMeetingResolution. Morgan; Facilities Tech Steven Hallmark; Facilities Manager Tony Lombardi; and County Manager Taco Pope 5/23/24 @ 9:00 a.m. - In January 2022, County Manager Taco Pope, instituted new Customer Care Standards to govern both internal and external interactions and to create a more positive work environment. Part of this initiative includes an Employee Recognition Program in which employees can nominate co-workers who have demonstrated Nassau County's Customer Care Standards and/or has provided exceptional performance beyond established duties and responsibilities. At the Wednesday, May 15th meeting, the Board recognized JD Morgan and Steven Hallmark as our new Employees of the Quarter. Steven Hallmark was selected for continually going above and beyond to ensure that employees and citizens are satisfied with his work. One particular instance was when he was installing sports netting at the Yulee Ballpark. Since installing netting isn't a typical task of facilities employees, Steven researched proper installation methods to ensure it was being done correctly. Upon installation, Steven noticed that the netting wasn't the proper size, so he cut and weaved the netting back together to make sure of proper fitting. He always takes great pride in his work and want to ensure that the product Facilities Maintenance delivers is professional. J.D. Morgan went above and beyond working on a transfer switch for the generator at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Since the part had to be specially built to fit our needs, JD kept in constant contact with the contractor, to ensure the County would not get pushed back in installation. As soon as JD received word that the part had arrived, he ensured all prep work was completed, made sure all vendors were aware of the installation dates, and communicated to the internal departments about the shut down. The coordination between JD, his crew, 2 outside contractors and two IT departments went off flawlessly thanks to JD's attention to detail, work ethic, and leadership. Please join us in congratulating Steven and JD on their accomplishments. We are proud of them and the outstanding service they provide to the residents and their fellow co-workers and are glad to have them on the Nassau County team. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 5/22/24 at 3:30 p.m.- The Fernandina Beach Library is hosting a series of adult programs in celebration of summer.
