![]() BUILDING BLOCKS SURVEY FOR NASSAU VISION 2050 The County launched Nassau Vision 2050, a collaborative 18-month process involving local leaders, residents, businesses, and stakeholders to shape the future of our community. The project kicked off with extensive community engagement and a review of the County’s plans, studies, and existing conditions. Based on this input, draft “Community Building Blocks” have been developed, outlining core values that will guide recommendations and strategies for the Vision plan. Residents, business owners, and other community members are encouraged to share their thoughts on the Building Blocks through a new survey. The survey asks respondents to: ● Identify which values resonate with them. ● Describe their ideas for what these values could look like in practice. Once participants take the quick 5-question survey, they will be entered in a raffle to win a local prize or experience in the County. This new modern facility will consist of 8,453 square feet and will feature three bays with an engine, rescue unit, and tanker. It will also contain 11 sleeping quarters, four and half bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and an exercise room. The Station is being built through a public-private partnership with GreenePointe Holdings, the developer for Tributary. It will be funded through impact fees (fees paid by developers to cover impact of new development). This is the third station to break ground since February 2024, including a new Station 70 on Nassauville Road and a new Station 90 on County Road 2 in Hilliard, both of which are under construction. The ceremony began with the Firefighters Prayer and pledge of allegiance, led by Board Chairman John Martin. Next, GreenPointe President Grady Myers stated, "There's nothing better that forms a sense of community than a fire station. It's so important and vital to the community and this station will give the County a better opportunity to serve the residents". District Five Commissioner Klynt Farmer asked for a round of applause for all the first responders in attendance. He then stated, "This is a central location in Nassau County and will be able to mobilize staff on the east and west side of the County. This is a tremendous step in the right direction. We've now broken ground on three station this year and did so without raising taxes. I'm very proud to be a small part of something big". We look forward to hosting a Ribbon Cutting later this year when the construction is complete. Below are some photos from the Groundbreaking Event. This legislation provides funding for initiatives to protect Florida's coastlines and inland waterways from sea level rise, storms, and flooding. It represents the largest investment in Florida’s history to help communities prepare for the effects of sea level rise, more severe storms, and increased flooding. For the 23/24 Fiscal Year, Nassau County applied for and received two grants under this program. The Thomas Creek watershed management has been a priority to Nassau County dating back to the desnagging efforts of 2007. Since then, a Planning Assistance to States Grant (PAS) study was performed with the Army Corps of Engineers that concluded the best course of action is a voluntary buyout program. Staff presented the Thomas Creek Implementation Plan in March of 2023 to the Board of County Commissioners for approval. Subsequently, the Stormwater and Drainage Management, as part of the Thomas Creek Implementation Plan initiative, applied for the Implementation Grant to purchase homes in the Thomas Creek watershed. This $2.8 million dollar grant requires a 50% which $1 million was approved for by the Board. The other $400,000 will be in work in-kind funds. On June 20, 2024, the County held on Open House regarding the Thomas Creek Implementation Plan. Dozens of residents were in attendance to learn more about on-going efforts to mitigate flooding in the area. Booths with County staff were set up in the Callahan Community Center to allow for specific questions that summary presentations have not answered to date. During the Open House, citizens were able to discuss the County's Bicentennial efforts and the Nassau Vision 2050 initiative. They were also able to give input for the County's vulnerability study and learn about the Conservation Land Acquisition and Management (CLAM) program in which Thomas Creek lands were ranked in the top 25 identified priority projects. Citizens that have already volunteered for the program learned more about the purchasing process. Some reviewed the preliminary floodplain elevations to be submitted to FEMA later this year. Others learned about the study for the first time and were added to this cycle’s volunteer list. As the project progresses, updates can be found on the Thomas Creek webpage.
