CONTACT:MARTHA L. OBERDORFER, MPH, FPEM DEPUTY DIRECTOR, EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT NASSAU COUNTY EOC E-MAIL:[email protected] FACEBOOK:NASSAUEM Nassau EM Welcomes CSX Responder Incident Training Exercise Nassau County Emergency Management (NCEM) will hold a multi-agency tabletop emergency response exercise in their Emergency Operations Center (EOC) February 28 – March 1. NCEM Director, Tim Cooper, is pleased to announce it will include a four-day hands-on “train derailment and hazardous materials response” training opportunity for local firefighters. The CSX Responder Incident Training (RIT) train is a specialized, hands-on training program that provides first responders with insights on how rail cars work and how to respond safely to rail-related incidents. CSX provides emergency planning assistance and training at no cost to fire, police, and other emergency response personnel in the communities they serve, but this is the first time this training will be offered in Nassau. NCEM is responsible for the County’s disaster preparedness. The NCEM staff writes plans for and organizes exercises of county response operations for all types of natural and man-made hazards. Although the planning for this training and exercise began almost a year ago, recent railroad derailments in the news have been a stark reminder of the importance of preparedness for any incident. “Thanks to our partnerships with CSX Transportation and the BlueLinx Corporation,” Director Cooper said, “we are fortunate to have this derailment and hazmat training in our community.” The training will take place on private property; therefore, attendance will be limited to personnel participating in the hands-on activities. County leadership and media representatives who wish to observe the training should contact the Nassau EOC at 904-548-0900 to request access. 2/24/23 @ 8:45 a.m.

Last week, Dawn Bostwick retired after 27 years of outstanding service to the County. Dawn began her employment as a Librarian in June 1995 and was promoted to Library Director in October 2000. During her 22 years as Director, Dawn was instrumental in growing our Library System into what it is today. In 2001, Dawn led efforts to partner with Florida State College at Jacksonville to open the Yulee Library Branch. Then in 2003, she led the Library to partner with the Bryceville Community Club to open the Bryceville Library Branch. Dawn also fostered relationships within the community. Those partnerships led to establishment of various "Friends" groups which work closely with the Library system on library programs and fundraising initiatives. In 2014, the Friends of the Fernandina Beach Library raised $2.5 million to expand and remodel the Fernandina Library Branch. At this time, the County has five Library branches to serve the residents of Nassau Count, all of which Dawn was responsible for staffing and operations. Dawn is also credited for implementing the Passport Program at the Library, a program in which residents can get renew their passports or obtain new passports. This program proved to be successful as it raises almost $100,000 in additional revenue for the Library System each year. She worked hard every year to obtain grants to assist the Library in costs for operations and purchase of new materials, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dawn secured a grant that allowed the Library System to introduce the library lockers. These lockers allow residents to checkout and return library materials outside of normal business hours. Dawn's last day of employment with the County was Friday, February 10th. The Board extends best wishes to Dawn and wishes her many years of health and happiness in the years to come. At this time, Assistant Library Director, Julie Cannavino, is serving as Interim Director. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 2/16/23 @ 3:15 p.m. At the Wednesday, February 15th Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2023-008, proclaiming the week of February 26 - March 4, 2023, as Childhood Cancer Awareness Week in Nassau County, Florida. Levi is a 15 year-old student who completed treatments in June 2021 for Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma. Both are pictured here with Commissioner Jeff Gray. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Week, residents are encouraged to recognize the impact pediatric cancer has on families within our community and to honor the children who have fought childhood cancer, and those whose lives were cut short. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer /16/23 @ 3:00 p.m.

It was discovered yesterday that a piling on the southern floating dock and gangway is broken and in need of repair. A contractor has already been mobilized and is hopeful that the repairs will be done before the weekend. As many frequent users of the North End Boat Ramp know, the northern floating dock and gangway were damaged during Hurricane Nicole. At the Monday, February 13, 2023 Board of County Commissioners meeting, a contract was awarded to Coker Industrial Contractors, Inc., to remove the floating dock and gangway from the water for repair. It is anticipated that the repairs to the northern dock and gangway will be complete within the next 60 days. We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause, however we are working to have the boat ramp re-opened as soon as possible. We appreciate your patience. Should you have any questions, please contact our Facilities Department at (904) 530-6120. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer |
