4/30/21 @ 11:45 a.m. - The Board of County Commissioners levies a Tourist Development Tax on lodging accommodations on Amelia Island. Tourist Development Taxes shall be used to promote tourism. They can also be used to acquire, construct, remodel improve or maintain publicly owned facilities or facilities owned and operated by not-for-profit organizations.

On September 14, 2020, at the recommendation of the Tourist Development Council, the Board of County Commissioners authorized use of $100,000 in TDT funds to sponsor the Amelia Island Museum of History's "Reimagination of Exhibits" project which consisted of renovating and updating all exhibit spaces.

The Amelia Island Museum of History hosts over 25,000 guests per year, 89% of which are from outside of Nassau County. According to the Museum's Director, Phyllis Davis, the Museum's exhibits had not been updated since 2000. This led her and her colleagues to develop a "reimagination" of the exhibits to make the island's story more compelling and more accessible to all ages and learning styles. The new exhibits will include over 5,000 artifacts and will incorporate more historical cultural groups that have contributed to our society, specifically  African Americans and Hispanics.

The Grand Opening Event will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2021, and will feature free admission from 10am-2pm, as well as a host of activities for children and live music.

The Board is honored to have been a part of the Museum's initiative in creating a 21st century experience that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come. For additional information about the Museum including hours of operation and upcoming events, call (904) 261-7378 or visit www.ameliamuseum.org.

Never drive around barricades into floodwaters! More than 50% of all flood fatalities are vehicle-related. It only takes 12 inches of water to carry off a small car and 18 inches of water to sweep a larger vehicle away. Turn Around Don’t Drown!

Board Proclaims May 9 - May 15 as National Police Week

4/28/2021

4/28/21 @ 12:30 p.m. - At the Board of County Commissioner's meeting held on Monday, April 26, 2021, the Board approved Resolution No. 2021-53 proclaiming the week of May 9 through May 15 as National Police Week in Nassau County, Florida; and proclaiming May 15, 2021 as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

National Police Week has become widely recognized through the United States as a way for citizenry to pay tribute and express their gratitude to those who have served, those that continue to serve, and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their community. During the last 10 years, 1,627 policy officers have died in the line of duty, averaging one death every 54 hours. To date, Nassau County has suffered the loss of 9 Law Enforcement Officers, including 6 from the Nassau County Sheriff's Office, 1 from the City of Fernandina Beach, 1 Florida Highway Patrol Officer, and 1 Hilliard Constable.

Nassau County Sheriff, Bill Leeper, Nassau County Emergency Management Director, Greg Foster, and the City of Fernandina Beach Police Chief, Jim Hurley, were all in attendance for the reading of the Resolution. Sheriff Leeper thanked the Commission for their support and announced that his office will host a special Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Wednesday, May 5th at 10:00 a.m. at the Sheriff's Memorial Plaza located at 77151 Citizens Way, Yulee, FL.

Chief Hurley also thanked the Commission for the recognition and happily accepted the Proclamation on behalf of his department. He also announced that he will retire from his position as Police Chief on Friday, April 30th after 15 years of exemplary service to the community. Congratulations Chief Hurley! We wish you many years of health and happiness and thank you for all you have done to keep Nassau County residents safe.

We now urge all residents to thank a police officer today for their service and dedication. To quote President Ronald Reagan, "Evil is powerless if the good are unafraid". Officers face acts of evil every day and its their bravery that allows them to push through and follow through on their oath to protect the residents they serve.

Flood Awareness Month: Protect Natural Floodplains

4/28/2021

4/28/21 @ 11:45 a.m. - Natural floodplains reduce flood risks to a community because they serve as a natural catchment basin to collect and retain runoff. They also play a valuable role in providing benefits to both human and natural systems.

According to the Florida Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), other benefits of floodplains include:

  • Fish and wildlife habitat protection
  • Natural flood and erosion control
  • Surface water quality maintenance
  • Groundwater recharge
  • Biological productivity
  • Higher quality recreational opportunities (fishing, bird watching, boating, etc.)

It's important that we protect natural floodplain functions by keeping these areas clear of debris to ensure water flow. If you see someone dumping in a waterway, please contact Code Enforcement at (904) 530-6200 or file a complaint online here.

4/27/21 @ 5:00 p.m. - Mike Pikula, President of the Friends of the Amelia Island Trails, provided these photos to us showing exceptional work by Road Department employees Travis Kolletar, John Wayne Williams and Travler Kolletar.

The bike rack along the Amelia River to Sea Trail was recently ripped from its mounts. The issue was reported to the Road Department and they quickly responded to make the necessary repairs. Great job to these employees and a big thank you to Mr. Pikula for sharing his positive interaction with the County!
