The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners and the City of Fernandina hosted the 4th annual charity golf tournament on Saturday, September 19, 2015. A total of $4355.20 was raised for the United Way and will be split between the City and County for their individual United Way campaigns.

Twelve teams played an open scramble format at the City's golf course. The winning team with a score of 60 included players Charles Strickland, Jamie Strickland, Henry Hunt and Bob Ganger. The second place with a score of 62 consisted of players Scott Mikelson, Bill Pittman, Adam Loud, and Sam Voit, playing on behalf of the City of Fernandina Beach and earning the highly coveted trophy and bragging rights for beating the County three years in a row.

Additional "challenges" were presented at various holes throughout the tournament. Larry Brugh won the putting challenge; Justin Brugh won the Nike distance challenge; Bob Ganger won the longest drive contest; Wayne Drawdy won the closest to the pin challenge; and Sean McKendree won the air gun challenge. A great time was had by all!

A big thank you to all the players, as well as those who sponsored the event or made donations for the raffle. We greatly appreciate everyone's support because without it, this event would not have been possible.

$35,000 Raised Locally for the Fill the Boot Campaign

9/9/2015

Somebody call 9-1-1, Nassau County is on fire!

From Saturday, September 5th through Monday, September 7th, Nassau County Fire Rescue's Local 3101 and the Callahan Volunteer Fire Department participated in the 2015 Fill the Boot Campaign and collected over $35,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Congratulations on exceeding last year's total by over $15,000 and for setting a new record!

For the last 60 years, the Muscular Dystrophy Association has partnered with the International Association of Fire Fighters for the annual Fill the Boot Campaign. Fire fighters across the nation volunteer countless hours to raise funds needed for medical research and to help people who have been affected by this disease.

Thank you to all the firefighters who volunteered their time last weekend, as well as to the citizens of Nassau County. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and we want you all to know that your donations, no matter how small, will help people right here in our community because all the money raised stays right here in Northeast Florida. A big thank you as well to those who worked behind the scenes to insure that the firefighters collecting money were given water and food throughout the day.

Cool Season Vegetable & Fruit Gardening

9/4/2015

Have you been thinking about growing your own produce but are unsure of what will survive in our climate or when you should plant them? Well, the Nassau County Extensive Office is here to help. Attached is a North Florida Vegetable Guide. This document includes information such as when you should plant, instructions on how to plant, and timelines on how long they take to harvest.

Here in northeast Florida, cool season vegetables and fruits are ready to be planted in August, September and October. If you plant them any earlier, they risk damage and disease due to the hot, rainy climate and exposure to mildew and bugs. Examples of produce to begin planting now includes: beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots, radishes, strawberries, and spinach.

For those that don't know, the County Extension offers free monthly classes on topics such as gardening, caring for grass and trees, and they have experts that can help you identify disease and fungus that may be prohibiting growth. For more information, please visit their website. You may also contact them by phone at (904) 530-6353.
