This year's winner is Dee Torre Kaufman and she was recognized at the Annual Volunteer Luncheon on Thursday, April 21, 2016. Dee has been volunteering for the Nassau County Library System since 2009 through the Fernandina Beach Friends of the Library. She has served as First Vice President and Campaign Chair for six years and currently serves as President. Her primary role has been grant writing and coordinating fundraising events. Dee has written numerous grants on the Library's behalf, earning $129,00 in grant funding to be used to assist with program costs, purchase of library materials and equipment. She developed and helped organize unique fundraising events including Pony Up and Party, Story Telling Slam, and Food for Thought. These events combined raised over $36,000.
When asked why she volunteers, Dee stated that she believes in giving back to her community. She had a great career and remains passionate about education, literacy, and building the capacity of the next generation. She indicated that volunteering has provided her with an opportunity to meet many other people from a wide variety of backgrounds that share her passion to help the community. Dee stated, "We have all learned more about ourselves and our community by working through good times and through all the struggles, and ultimately achieved our goal of obtaining a new facility for the Fernandina Branch. We could not have done this without the help of the community and we are grateful to everyone involved in helping make our dream a reality".
Nassau County is grateful to you Dee, as well as the other members of the Friends of the Library organizations throughout the County for all you have done for our library system. The dedication you have demonstrated and the commitment you have made to improve the quality of life for your fellow citizens reflect great credit upon you and all Nassau County residents. Thanks for all you do!
