Nassau County Emergency Management is monitoring Hurricane Matthew very closely. The Emergency Operations Center is currently activated at a Level 2 which indicates there is some threat to the County. Emergency personnel are currently assessing the situation to determine if further action is needed. Staff members will also be participating in conference calls with the State Emergency Operations Center and the National Hurricane Center to stay current on the storm's projected path. The Board of County Commissioners has scheduled a Special Meeting for 6:00 p.m. to discuss declaring a local state of emergency. Though the County is not under a Hurricane Warning at this time, declaring a local state of emergency will allow Nassau County to apply for grant assistance if needed following the storm.
A conference call at 11:00 a.m. this morning determined that Matthew has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. Even without a direct hit, Nassau County will face strong winds, high surf, beach erosion, and waves of heavy rainfall Wednesday and Thursday. Though the current path is parallel to Florida, there is still a large margin of error. A slight shift westward would increase local impacts. Emergency Management personnel urges everyone to begin preparing now, just in case the storm shifts and we have a more direct hit!
