3/21/18 @ 9:10 a.m. - Various areas of Nassau County are located within low lying coastal plains which are susceptible to flooding from rivers, creeks, and wetlands after heavy rains.

What can you do to reduce flood risk? See Nassau County's newly published brochure: "Flood Protection and Safety".

If you have any questions, please contact Sue Ann Alleger with the Department of Planning & Economic Opportunity at (904) 530-6322 or via email at [email protected].

Flood safety is also the responsibility of the county. Nassau Chester and blackrock roads have had advancements that have effect the water run off on these roads up to and including pirates woods. Where manmade canals, ditches, and drainage was put in place to move rising waters toward the waterways behind and alongside of these areas it has not been maintained. As more and more Housing is developed there has been increased flooding of these properties, with mass Home building and new elevations of the housing code along with the county not maintaining these areas, it has created ongoing issues with flooding even within the slightest rains. I contacted roads and bridges about 5 years age and hosted a meeting at my home to share my research in the matter and all of Pirates woods area concerns at which it was agreed the county was responsible for maintaining these areas up to and including parts of manmade canel to ensure proper run off and protecting all these properties. At that time I shared many documents, research, and recommendations with the county to correct, of which they agreed to work on. Very little has been done, and there’s been an additional increase of new housing effecting the ongoing problem even more. I would suggest the county moved toward addressing these issues up to and including a impact fee from addditional developers requesting permitting that will impact the flooding concerns.
I would greatly appreciate any additional updates addressing this matter. Tks

Hi Ms. Companion,

Please reach out to our new Public Works Director, Ms. Becky Bray, and request a site visit with her and the Road Supervisor for this area, Keith Sawyer. I am also going to forward your concerns to her so she can begin researching what took place 5 years ago and anything that has taken place since. we've had a lot of change in staffing since that time.

Please call her assistant, Shelley Caldwell, at (904) 530-6225 to get on her calendar.

Thank you.
