On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, members of the Nassau County Special Hazards Operation Team (SHOT) participated in a submarine fire drill at Kings Bay Naval Base in Kingsland, GA, to test and exercise mutual aid responses that would be necessary should a significant ship fire occur on the base. Ship fires are very complex because each vessel varies in size, design, materials, and general layout.
Simulated training provides officers and crew with the knowledge and skills need to confidently deal with fires on board a ship by identifying available resources and coordinating, reviewing and practicing response plans.
Assistance Chief of Operations, Robert M. Womble, Jr., stated "there were some lessons learned and we plan to meet in the future to discuss additional training to include live fire training with the mutual aid agencies".
