7/31/17 @ 4:30 p.m. - On Monday, July 31, 2017, a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held in celebration of Eric Oliver Way. Elected Officials, Public Safety Professionals, various County staff, and the citizens gathered near Target and Courtney Isles for the ceremony honoring Deputy Eric Oliver, who was killed in-the-line-of-duty on November 22, 2016.
The ceremony began with the Nassau County Sheriff's Office presenting colors, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and invocation. Board of County Commissioners Chairman, Danny Leeper, welcomed everyone to the event and thanked all the men and women in uniform for everything they do to keep Nassau County safe.
Sheriff Bill Leeper offered opening remarks and stated, "Every day, public safety officers work tirelessly to protect our citizens, enforce our laws, and keep our neighborhoods safe. We owe a profound debt to all those who have worn the badge, and to the families whose care enables them to serve with courage and pride. Without them, we would not enjoy the quality of life that we all do".
Nassau County Fire/Rescue Batallion Chief, Mike Eddins, echoed Sheriff Leeper's remarks and added, "For there is no greater love, than for a man to lay down his life for his brother. I have often thought about those words, and what they mean to me. Deputy Oliver gave those words context. There isn’t a man or woman that puts on a uniform and pins on a badge that doesn’t understand their oath, and what that means to put yourself in harms way in service to your community. They also understand the meaning of brotherhood, and what it means to protect one another. On the fateful day that Deputy Oliver was called upon, he reacted without hesitation or care for himself. He did it because he knew his partner needed him. In retrospect, some may say that this was a senseless tragedy. I would disagree. Eric left us doing exactly what he loved, and in service of his fellow man".
Doug Oliver also spoke briefly about Eric's love for his job and his fellow officers. He thanked everyone for their support and for dedicating the road in his honor. Shortly after, Deputy Oliver's parents, Doug and Sharon, and his grandmother cut the ribbon commemorating the opening of Eric Oliver Way.
The Board of County Commissioners would like to thank KIMCO Realty for allowing the road to be renamed in honor of Deputy Oliver, and the Nassau County Professional Fire Fighters Local 3101 for purchasing the signs. They also express their gratitude to everyone who came out to show their support for our men and women in uniform, as well as the Oliver Family.
