The Nassau County Health Department released the attached report today notifying Nassau County residents of a Rabies Alert. The purpose of this alert is to increase awareness to the public and stress the importance of keeping pets up-to-date with their rabies vaccinations. The current rabies alert is in effect for 60 days. The center of the rabies alert is at Fernandina Beach, however other areas of the County are encouraged to stay alert as well.
Please review the attached report carefully and notify Nassau County Animal Control at (904) 530-6150 if you notice any unusual behavior from your pet or from stays in your neighborhood. Rabies is a disease of the nervous system and can be fatal to pets and humans. The only treatment for human exposure to rabies is rabies specific immunizations and it is very important that treatment be started immediately after exposure.
