Day 2 of countdown to #floridagophertortoiseday 🐢 we introduce a small but important insect when it comes to the cleanliness of burrows. The Little Gopher Tortoise Scarab Beetle (Alloblackburneus troglodytes) is considered an obligate commensal, meaning they can only be found in #gophertortoise burrows. They provide dung removal services and help keep other pests such as fly populations down. There are numerous other insects such as burrow flies, copris, hister and grove beetles. All play their own role in this mini-ecosystem. Have you ever seen one of these insects?
