At the Florida Association of Counties Annual Conference held June 17-20, 2014, Commissioner Pat Edwards graduated from the Certified County Commissioner Program, and Commissioner Steve Kelley graduated from the Advanced County Commissioner Program. Neither program is required to serve as a County Commissioner in Florida, however the Commissioners voluntarily enrolled in these programs to enhance their skills relevant to a commissioner's duties and responsibilities as an elected officials.
To graduate from the Certified County Commissioner Program, Commissioner Edwards had to complete 45 hours of course work. Commissioner Edwards is now eligible to register for the Advanced County Commissioner Program taking place next year. Commissioner Steve Kelley graduated from the Certified County Commissioner Program in June 2012 and elected to continue his education through the Advanced County Commissioner Program. To graduate from the Advanced County Commissioner Program, Commissioner Steve Kelley had to complete 27 hours of coursework.
Both Commissioners stated that these courses have provided them with additional skills needed to gain a better understanding on ethics and Sunshine Laws, as well as how to handle various issues such as growth and budgetary constraints.
