Within days of a disaster, out of town "contractors" will begin going door to door and putting up signs around town advertising their services because they know local contractors will be having a hard time keeping up with demand. You should always be wary of anyone approaching you offering a service or price you can't refuse, especially if they are demanding cash up front. Here's some ways you can protect yourself:
-Get a quote or proposal in writing on business letterhead
-Never pay up front for more than 1/3 of the total price
-Do not pay in cash
-Resist any attempt to make a decision on the spot
-Ask to see licensing and check with your local building dept to ensure they are registered to do work in your county
-Ask for references
-Ask for proof of insurance including liability and workers compensation insurance
If you feel you've been scammed or to report someone who may be scamming in your area, please call the National Center for Disaster Fraud at (877) 623-3423 or email them at [email protected].
