Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to bring 2-4 inches of rain to Nassau County and even though the amount is similar to a strong thunderstorm, Nassau County has experienced a lot of rain recently. Those living in low lying areas prone to flooding may wish to use sandbags as an extra precaution. The bags are already filled and ready to go. They can be picked up today until 8:00 p.m. at the following locations:
Public Works employees will be present to help you load them. If you have any questions, please contact the Road Department at (904) 530-6175. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 7/6/21 @ 10:15 a.m. - Emergency Management Director, Greg Foster, participated in a briefing this morning with the National Hurricane Center and determined that very little has changed with TS Elsa since our update yesterday afternoon. The storm continues on a track that will take Elsa to the west of Nassau County. The NHC indicated that the storm may intensify into a Hurricane "briefly" as it approaches the west cost of Florida near Cedar Key.
There are currently no storm watches along the east coast of Florida. Locally, we are still expecting a 1-2 foot storm surge along the coast and 2-4 inches of rain. It has been said that Nassau County should expect conditions equivalent to a strong thunderstorm. It is still anticipated that Nassau County will begin seeing some deterioration of weather conditions late this afternoon into tomorrow morning. Emergency Management remains prepared to activate the Emergency Operations Center if needed and has a shelter on stand-by. They will continue to monitor the storm as the forecast remains fluid at this time. If you have any questions, Emergency Management can be reached at (904) 548-0900. Residents are also encouraged to monitor TS Elsa through reliable sources like the local news, National Hurricane Center, National Media or Nassau County Emergency Management at www.OneNassau.com. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 7/6/21 @ 9:10 a.m. -

According to the 12:00 p.m. information released by the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Elsa has made a slight shift west. They are now anticipating it to enter the State of Florida just north of Cedar Key. That tract would have the storm traveling over Columbia County, northeast into Georgia. At this time, there are no storm watches along east coast of Florida and no plans for a local State of Emergency in Nassau County. Nassau County could experience 1-2 foot storm surges and approximately 1-3 inches of rain with conditions similar to a nor'easter beginning Tuesday eveninginto Wednesday morning. We will continue to provide information as it is available. You can also find important information at www.OneNassau.com. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 7/5/21 @ 12:40 p.m. - Below are public meetings scheduled for this week:

At this time, the storm is near Cuba and is expected to remain a Tropical Storm with sustained winds of 50-60 mph. The current track shows Elsa entering the State near Cedar Key and traveling northeast toward the coast of Georgia with the eye passing over western Nassau County.
Currently, there are no evacuation orders in the State and only a few counties have declared a local State of Emergency. It is anticipated that Nassau County could experience 1-2 inches of rain and 1-2 foot storm surge, however we will remain in a "wait and see" pattern until the storm passes Cuba and heads toward Florida. The ground is already very wet due to the amount of rain recently which means that tree roots may already be less stable and could be at risk of uprooting and causing damage to power lines. Emergency Management has been in communication with local power companies who have assured us they are ready to respond as needed. The Nassau County Department of Health and Nassau County School District remain prepared to open a special needs, general population, and pet safe shelter in Hilliard, should the need arise. The Nassau County Road Department is also out today addressing ditches/areas with common drainage problems, in preparation of the rainfall we could experience from Elsa. At this time, it is anticipated that Nassau County could begin experiencing the early affects of Elsa Tuesday afternoon with the storm arriving in Nassau County early Wednesday.County Officials are planning to hold another call tomorrow following the mid-morning update from the National Hurricane Center. We will keep you all posted as information becomes available. Residents are asked to continue to monitor Tropical Storm Elsa, through reliable sources like local news, National Hurricane Center, National Media, or Nassau County Emergency Management @ OneNassau.com. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 7/4/21 @ 2:30 p.m. - Just a few tips on keeping your pets safe and content during the holiday today.
