​Sea turtle nesting season is here! From May 1st through October 31st, sea turtles come ashore on Amelia Island beaches to nest, and we all play a part in helping keep them safe.

Each Tuesday during nesting season, we’ll share facts about our local sea turtles and the simple steps we can take to protect them.

This week: Keep It Flat!
We all enjoy digging in the sand at the beach, but did you know those holes can be dangerous for both people and sea turtles?

For beachgoers, holes can be hard to see and may cause serious trips and falls. They also create obstacles for beach patrol vehicles and lifeguards, which can slow response times and put others at risk.

For sea turtles, large holes can become deadly traps. Nesting mothers and hatchlings can become stuck with no way out, and hatchlings caught after sunrise are unlikely to survive.

So enjoy your time on the beach, but before you leave, please remember: fill in your holes and leave the sand flat for everyone’s safety.

Bird watching is a fun and rewarding activity for all ages, and now the Nassau County Public Library System is making it even easier to explore the birds of Northeast Florida. Following the popularity of bird watching programs at the Yulee Branch library, the library has partnered with the Duval Audubon Society to provide bird watch backpacks for patrons at each of the system’s five branches.

These backpacks are available for checkout for two weeks and include binoculars for both children and adults, a guide to backyard birds in Northeast Florida, and a copy of Sibley Birds East. Whether you are spotting birds from your porch, along a wooded trail, or at the beach, these backpacks are a great way to discover the variety of birds found in our area. Stop by your local branch and check one out for your next outdoor adventure!

The next Household Hazardous Waste Recycling Event will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 8 a.m. to noon (or until trucks reach capacity).

Hosted by Keep Nassau Beautiful and Nassau County Solid Waste, this event allows Nassau County residents to safely dispose of items that are too hazardous for the landfill. Examples include electronics, aerosols, herbicides and pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs, paint and paint thinners, oil filters, and more.

The event will take place at the Nassau County Road Department, located at 86200 Gene Lasserre Boulevard in Yulee. Motorists will enter the facility from Courtney Isles Way (west of Chester Road).

This event is FREE for Nassau County residents with proof of residency. No commercial loads will be accepted; however, small businesses may call ahead for pricing at 352-334-0440.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Barnabas Food Pantry.

Nassau County Animal Services launched its Pet Food Pantry to help support local pets and the families who care for them. Located at 86078 License Road in Fernandina Beach, the pantry is open every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for Nassau County residents, with proof of residency requested.

Since its introduction in April, the program has already made a positive impact. May marked the first full month of operation, and NCAS distributed more than 600 pounds of dry pet food and over 30 cans of wet food to help local families continue caring for their pets.

This donor-supported program focuses on making pet food more accessible while building partnerships with local organizations already assisting residents. NCAS has partnered with three local food banks and hopes to expand these partnerships in the coming months to reach even more pets and families in need.

Community members are encouraged to support the pantry by donating dry or wet pet food and storage bags, following along for updates, and helping name the pantry as the program continues to grow.

Through this collaborative effort, Nassau County Animal Services is helping strengthen the community by keeping pets healthy, supported, and with the families who love them.

​On May 20, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners approved a Resolution supporting the County’s ongoing resilience planning efforts, including implementation of recommendations from the Nassau County Adaptation Plan.

During the meeting, Stormwater & Drainage Director and representatives from Halff presented the Adaptation Plan, which builds upon the County’s previously completed Vulnerability Assessment.

The Vulnerability Assessment evaluated potential impacts from flooding, storm surge, sea level rise, and drainage challenges throughout Nassau County. Using those findings, the Adaptation Plan identifies strategies to improve community resilience and help guide future infrastructure investments, stormwater improvements, land-use decisions, and capital projects.

These efforts are important because they help Nassau County proactively prepare for future environmental challenges while protecting residents, businesses, public infrastructure, and natural resources. By identifying vulnerable areas and planning ahead, the County can make more informed decisions that reduce flood risks, improve drainage, strengthen infrastructure, and enhance long-term community safety and sustainability.

Recommended actions include stormwater system enhancements, flood mitigation measures, protection of natural flood storage areas, and integration of resilience considerations into future planning efforts. These strategies can help minimize future damages, improve emergency preparedness, support economic stability, and preserve quality of life for current and future residents.

The Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan were funded through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Resilient Florida Program.

The Art of the Book Cover

Art is all around us. Walk into our public library and you will see a kaleidoscope of color and imagery.  Books line the shelves and are sometimes displayed with the covers facing out to entice the reader.

Before a reader turns a single page, before a critic writes a review, before a story finds its audience, the cover speaks first. It whispers mystery, announces authority, seduces curiosity, or radiates emotion. With thousands of books lining the shelves, the cover often determines whether a reader pauses or moves on.
​
The art of the book cover sits at the intersection of literature, marketing, psychology, typography, and visual storytelling. It is both commercial and artistic. It must attract attention while remaining faithful to the spirit of the text inside.
So why are covers designed the way they are? How do they influence our reading decisions?
 
The art committee of the Fernandina Beach Friends of the Library decided to find out.
 
They researched “The Art of the Book Cover” and put together a show that will be on exhibit in the Community Room of the Fernandina Beach Public Library.
 
Come and learn about the history of publishing book covers, the science of the book cover design, the influence of e-books and independent book sellers and much more.
 
We hope you will be enlightened and entertained by “The Art of the Book Cover” show that opens July 7th and runs until August 27th.
 
A book cover is a promise.   And we promise to make this exploration enjoyable and informative to all.
 
Please join us this summer at the Library.  It’s going to be fun!

The Tiny Art Contest has been a tremendous success, with dozens of creative entries submitted by talented artists of all ages. Inspired by this year's Summer Reading theme, Unearth a Story, participants transformed small canvases into unique works of art using a variety of mediums and plenty of imagination.

Now it's time for the community to get involved! All submitted artwork will be on display at the Library from June 17–26 for public viewing and voting. Stop by to admire the creativity on display and cast your vote for your favorite piece.

The contest will conclude with a Winners Reception on June 29 from 3:00–5:00 p.m., where the Friends of the Library will recognize the top three artists. Everyone is invited to attend and celebrate the participants and their incredible miniature masterpieces.

• CR 121 remains closed from Stokes Rd to CR 119 for the construction of the roadway and Concrete box culvert
• Continued box culvert construction by beginning formwork installation for the left-end wing wall and tying reinforcing steel
• Added limerock, mixed stabilized subgrade, performed cutting and compaction operations, and removed unsuitable subgrade material from Station 87+77 to Station 107+37
