11/8/18 @ 3:45 p.m. - In accordance with President Donald Trump's national directive, Governor Rick Scott has issued a Memorandum ordering all flags in the State to be lowered to half-staff in honor and remembrance of the victims of the act of violence committed in Thousand Oaks, California on November 8, 2018. Flags will remain at half-staff through sunset on Saturday, November 10, 2018. 11/8/18 @ 2:35 p.m. - The Board of County Commissioners has been notified that if the Secretary of State orders a machine recount in the U.S. Senate,the Florida Commissioner of Agriculture, and/or any other race before 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 11, 2018, the Canvassing Board will meet to conduct that recount. If the recount is ordered after 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 11th, the recount shall immediately commence thereafter. The recount, if ordered, will take place at the Supervisor of Elections Office located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL. The recount will be open to the public. Persons with disabilities requiring reasonable accommodations to participate should call the Supervisor of Elections at (904) 491-7500 at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. For additional information, please review the attached notice from the Supervisor of Elections Office. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office 11/8/18 @ 8:15 a.m. The Board of County Commissioners will host a Groundbreaking Ceremony today at 2:00 p.m. to celebrate construction of the new Multi-Use Trail (Amelia River to Sea Trail). The 2.2 mile long multi-use path will run adjacent to Simmons Road beginning on South Fletcher Avenue and extending west to Bailey Road, and continue south to the Ybor Alvarez Softball Complex where the trail will connect with Crane Island and ultimately terminate at the fishing pier on Crane Island. Project design began in early 2017 and several public outreach events were hosted to allow the community an opportunity to review the plans, provide comments, and ask questions during the design phase. The contractor is ready to begin construction and both the City and County are very excited to commemorate this event. The completed trail will provide an additional safe route for citizens to walk or bike and we look forward to the project's completion which is anticipated in the 4th quarter of 2019. The City and County have entered into a Interlocal Agreement committing to shared maintenance of the trail upon completion. This event will take place on Tuesday, November 13th at the Fairgrounds Multi-Purpose Building in Callahan (543350 US Hwy 1) starting at 6:30pm. The event is free and open to the public, who are encouraged to attend to learn more and provide input. The Nassau County Planning and Zoning Board (PZB) has formed a subcommittee, the Western Nassau Heritage Preservation Committee (WNHPC). Five PZB members who reside in Western Nassau, the area of the County west of I-95, serve on the WNHPC. The committee is charged with discussing the future of Western Nassau as it relates to community planning, and to work with the County Planning and Economic Opportunity Department to determine how they can best assist in these proactive planning efforts. The WNHPC anticipates working on this initiative for the next 18 months, with the result being a vision plan and policies for the Board of County Commissioners to consider including in the County Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Code.
