2/15/24 @ 10:00 a.m. - On Monday, February 12, 2024, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) hosted a Groundbreaking Ceremony in celebration of the upcoming construction of Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) Station 70. The event took place at the station's future site located at 942456 Old Nassauville Road. Upon completion, this station will replace the current Station 70 located near the intersection of State Road 200/Old Nassauville Road.
The event began with opening remarks by Chairman John Martin. He stated, "The Board of County Commissioners is committed to improving the quality of life for the residents. Part of that includes proactive efforts to ensure that the health and safety of our residents is protected through adequate planning of fire stations and emergency personnel to accommodate a growing community. It's also important that we provide the brave men and women of NCFR with a station that meets current standards and provides a safe, comfortable space to stay when not responding to emergency calls. This station will serve the department and the community well for years to come." Chairman Martin also thanked his fellow Commissioners and County Manager Taco Pope for their efforts and added, "we're able to build this station without raising taxes."
Next to speak was NCFR Chief Brady Rigdon who stated, "Our passion is to professionally serve our community with pride, integrity, and compassion while striving to exceed the expectations of our customers. The current Station 70 is outdated and has served its useful life. This new site was purchased in January 2022; the purchase order for construction was issued in October 2023; and here we are today with construction beginning. The contractor, Acon Construction, has provided an estimated completion date of January 2025."
Chief Ridgon also announced that in 2023, the department responded to 11,512 calls for service. Of that, nearly 1,400 of those were in the territory that Station 70 serves. Those calls include heart attacks, strokes, motor vehicle accidents, brush fires, house fires, and more. Chief Ridgon added, "I'd like to thank the Board of County Commissioners for all their support of NCFR and the public safety we provide. I'd also like to thank County Manager Taco Pope, Assistant County Manager Marshall Eyerman, and Deputy County Manager Robert Companion for their support as well."
