WIC COUNSELORS SUPPORT MOMS DURING NATIONAL BREASTFEEDING MONTH Contact: Jennifer Bothast, PIO Jennifer.Bothast@flhealth.gov 904-832-2644 While breastfeeding may seem like the easiest and most natural thing for mothers to do, it can be overwhelming and frustrating for many. That is why August is observed as National Breastfeeding Month, to ensure that new mothers understand the importance of breastfeeding in the lives of their children. The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program at the Florida Department of Health in Nassau County has a team of knowledgeable and compassionate breastfeeding counselors to offer advice and lend mothers support to achieve their breastfeeding goals. Their motto is “Breastfeeding Shouldn’t Hurt and Babies Should Latch!” For moms who qualify for WIC, there is a breast pump program which allows moms to return to work or school while still giving them the opportunity to provide breastmilk for their baby. There are in-person appointments for WIC clients and virtual prenatal breastfeeding classes. Breastfeeding services can be provided in the WIC client’s preferred language through a bi-lingual staff member or an interpreter service, if needed. There is a breastfeeding help line at (904) 344-6317 available 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week to provide breastfeeding support and answer questions. This program is part of the commitment that WIC has to support breastfeeding as the normal and healthiest way to feed babies. To see if you qualify for the WIC program call or www.floridahealth.gov/programs-and-services/wic/wic-eligibility.html. Part of this initiative includes an Employee Recognition Program in which employees can nominate co-workers who have demonstrated Nassau County's Customer Care Standards and/or has provided exceptional performance beyond established duties and responsibilities. We are pleased to announce that our new Employee of the Quarter is Nassau County Animal Control Officer, Marty Pruitt. Marty has worked for Nassau County since 2016 and is well known and loved among members of our community. In fact, the County recently received emails from residents commending him and thanking him for his service. One citizen expressed their gratitude to Marty for his help in handling a pack of aggressive dogs that had been trespassing onto his property. He stated, "I truly believe Officer Pruitt's exceptional professionalism is the primary reason for the peaceful and amicable resolution". This is just one small example of Marty's service and dedication to the County and its residents. If you see Marty, be sure to congratulate him on being our Employee of the Quarter! Also, in case you missed it, Marty was also featured in our "Proudly Serving Nassau" series last year. This video highlights the service he provides to the community every day.
