The National Association of Counties (NACo) has proclaimed April as National County Government Month. Each day this month, we will provide different facts about Nassau County, including information about its history, services provided and more.
Today, we would like to tell you all about Nassau County Animal Services. Are you aware that the Board of County Commissioners, through its Animal Services Division, provides animal care and control for a majority of the County? (Nassau Humane Society provides animal control services within the limits of the City of Fernandina Beach, under a contract with the City government).
Nassau County Animal Services protects people and property from the danger of disease and the nuisance of roaming, uncontrolled animals. They provide rescue for animals that are lost or trapped; investigate complaints of animal abuse; conduct cruelty investigations; transport injured animals (both domesticated and wild) safely and humanely to the appropriate animal care facility; and promote responsible pet ownership. The Board of County Commissioners also owns and operates an animal shelter to provide a safe place for homeless pets to be loved and cared for while waiting for adoption.
Nassau County Animal Services' animal shelter is a no-kill shelter, meaning that they have a 90% or greater placement rate for the animals in their care. This is achieved through professionalism, compassion, commitment, and through community partnerships. In Fiscal Year 2021/2022, Nassau County Animal Services responded to 3,003 call for service. Additionally, 2,196 animals came into the Nassau County Animal Services shelter. This included stray, lost and surrendered animals. Of those, 1,492 animals were adopted into loving homes; 374 animals were reunited with their families; and 88 were transferred to rescues or other shelters to increase their chances of adoption.
So next time you're considering a new pet, please visit Nassau County Animal Services to see what they have available. If you're not able to adopt but are interested in helping an animal in need, the shelter always needs volunteers. They have tons of volunteer opportunities including: dog walking, cat cuddling, kennel cleaning, washing linens, and more. You can also foster pets so they can have a nice place to stay while waiting on their permanent home, or you can take a pup out on a doggy date to get them some much needed time out of their kennels.
