5/3/24 @ 2:45 p.m. - Please be advised that flags will be flown at half-staff beginning at sunrise on Saturday, May 4, 2024 through sunset on Sunday, May 5, 2024, in observance of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day. This is the 43rd annual National Fallen Firefighters Day which was established to honor fallen firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting their communities. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend will be hosted by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation at the National Fallen Firefighters Monument in Emmitsburg, Maryland. This year’s national tribute will honor 226 firefighters who lost their lives. These 226 firefighters will be remembered for their heroic and noble actions. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 4/18/24 @ 10:00 a.m. Flags are being flown at half-staff in honor of Florida's former Governor, Bob Graham, who passed away on April 16, 2024 at the age of 87. A memo from Governor DeSantis stated, "A graduate of the University of Florida and Harvard Law School, Governor Graham began his career in public service in 1966 when he was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. He served two terms in the Florida House, and two terms in the Florida Senate, before becoming Governor in 1978. Governor Graham served two terms as Governor before his election to the United States Senate, where he served for 18 years until retiring from public life in 2005. As Governor, Governor Graham championed economic advancement and public education, especially teaching civics to Florida’s children, and made historic achievements in conserving Florida’s natural resources. In retirement, Governor Graham published regularly on state and national issues while founding the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at the University of Florida to train future political leaders." Flags will be flown at half-staff beginning today through sunset on the day of internment. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 11/24/23 @ 11:30 a.m. On November 19, 2023, former First Lady of the United States, Rosalynn Carter, passed away at the age of 96. Pursuant to the President’s orders and as a mark of respect, flags will be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida from midnight November 25, 2023, until sunset on the day of interment. -Sabrina Robertson Public Information Officer 10/26/23 @ 5:00 p.m. - As a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on October 25, 2023, in Lewiston, Maine, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. directed all flags to be lowered to half-staff immediately. Pursuant to this direction, I hereby direct the flags of the United States and the State of Florida to be flown at half-staff at all local and state buildings, installations, and grounds throughout the State of Florida immediately until sunset on Monday, October 30, 2023.
