Below is a press release issued by Mr. Dave Richardson who is serving as the Public Information Officer during the storm:
PRESS RELEASE West Bound Traffic From Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island Remains Open for Evacuation; East Bound Closed to Traffic Nassau County Emergency Management ... For Immediate Release 10/5/2016 Contact: Dave Richardson (904) 548-0900 or (904) 654-5858 email: tridentdave@gmail.com Facebook: Nassau EM twitter: @NassauEM To encourage evacuation of Fernandina Beach and Amelia Island as Hurricane Matthew moves closer to Nassau County, West bound traffic remains open. However, that window likely will close early tomorrow morning when tropical storm force winds will reach 40 mph. At that time, the Shave Bridge will be closed in all directions. East bound traffic has been closed since 6pm today. Services to the Island will likely not be available beginning tonight; no electricity or water for those remaining residents who have not heeded a mandatory evacuation. Nassau County Director of Emergency Management Billy Estep continues to encourage those who live on the Island to leave due to projected storm surge numbers and hurricane force winds. Tropical force storm winds will begin raking the coast sometime around 8am, assuming the current speed of Matthew. Those winds could last up to 30 hours as the storm makes its way up the coast. Hurricane force storm winds could begin late afternoon tomorrow and last for up to seven hours, according to Estep. Many residents are asking when they might be able to return to their homes on the Island. That, according to Estep, will depend upon a number of factors; the severity of the storm, any structural damage to the Shave Bridge and the amount of debris field that will have to be removed before first responders can safely cross the bridge to conduct emergency operations, including search and rescue. Estep says that may be days, not hours. Planning now has begun at Nassau County Emergency Management for post-storm impact. Resources are being secured for distribution as soon as possible after storm debris has been cleared to allow residents to safely travel on our roadways. Times and places of distribution will be announced via the news media, social media and on our Facebook page Nassau EM. At this time, a mandatory evacuation has been issued for those residing in Zones A, C, and F beginning at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. Please save this number as it will be your primary point of contact over the next few days!

If you have any questions, please contact the Road & Bridge Department at (904) 530-6175. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office The Board of County Commissioners will be having a Special Meeting at 1:00 p.m. for a briefing on Hurricane Matthew. That meeting will be held in the Commission Chambers located at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL 32097 (James S. Page Governmental Complex behind the bread store on SR200/A1A). -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office Nassau County Emergency Management is monitoring Hurricane Matthew very closely. The Emergency Operations Center is currently activated at a Level 2 which indicates there is some threat to the County. Emergency personnel are currently assessing the situation to determine if further action is needed. Staff members will also be participating in conference calls with the State Emergency Operations Center and the National Hurricane Center to stay current on the storm's projected path. The Board of County Commissioners has scheduled a Special Meeting for 6:00 p.m. to discuss declaring a local state of emergency. Though the County is not under a Hurricane Warning at this time, declaring a local state of emergency will allow Nassau County to apply for grant assistance if needed following the storm.
A conference call at 11:00 a.m. this morning determined that Matthew has maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. Even without a direct hit, Nassau County will face strong winds, high surf, beach erosion, and waves of heavy rainfall Wednesday and Thursday. Though the current path is parallel to Florida, there is still a large margin of error. A slight shift westward would increase local impacts. Emergency Management personnel urges everyone to begin preparing now, just in case the storm shifts and we have a more direct hit! For information on how to prepare an emergency plan, please click here. You should also familiarize yourself with the Nassau County Evacuation Zone Map to be aware of which zone you are located in case of an emergency evacuation. Please visit Nassau County Emergency Management's website often for current updates and to sign up for emergency alerts. If you need to speak with someone at the EOC, please call (904) 548-0900. -Sabrina Robertson County Manager's Office |
