Microplastics are now being found in the human body, raising concerns about potential health impacts. Long-term effects are being researched but early studies have indicated that microplastics can interfere with digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall health.
While reducing plastic pollution nationally requires policy changes and technological advances, there are things residents can do locally to make a difference.
- Reduce consumption: Choose products with minimal packaging. Opt for bulk purchases instead of individually wrapped items and avoid single-use plastics like cutlery, straws and water bottles.
- Reuse items: Carry reusable bags, water bottles and food containers.
- Recycle effectively: learn about your local recycling guidelines and ensure you're properly sorting and disposing of plastic waste.
- Support businesses that reduce plastic waste: Your purchasing decisions can influence businesses to adopt more sustainable practices.
- Cook more: Making your own meals can significantly reduce the amount of plastic packaging you consume.
- Choose reusable alternatives: Opt for glass and stainless steel containers instead of plastic ones, and use wooden cutting boards instead of plastic ones.
- Be mindful of microplastics: Avoid products that intentionally add microplastics that later end up in the ocean.
Local garbage companies offer recycling to their customers. However, Nassau County also provides three recycling facilities where you can dispose of your plastic waste at no-cost. For locations, please click here.
