Bicycling is great for several reasons. It's moderate intensity has significant benefits to your physical and mental health. It can also reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, certain cancers, and diabetes. Bicycling is healthy for the environment, too! There's no greenhouse gas emissions so their use doesn't affect air quality. Further, bicycles cut down on traffic congestion and improve mobility.
The Board of County Commissioners remains committed to improving mobility in the County. In fact, the adopted Strategic Plan puts an emphasis on expanding the non-vehicular mobility network through a series of trails and multiuse paths. The BOCC has already constructed numerous trails on Amelia Island, a large portion of which were funded by state and/or federal funds. The BOCC recently awarded bids for two additional trail segments utilizing over $8 million in new grant funding for two additional trail segments.
We are grateful to our partners of the Friends of the Amelia Island Trail for helping the County in developing trails on Amelia Island. The BOCC looks forward to expanding non-vehicular mobility throughout the County in the future.
