According to the Department of Health, life expectancy is increasing. People are living longer and staying healthier as they age. Additionally, the number and percentage of the population aged 65+ is rapidly increasing. Older adults are the faster-growing population in the United States. It is anticipated that by 2030, 1 in every 5 Americans will be 65 or older. This means that as the older population grows, so will their spending power. People age 50 and over contribute $8.3 trillion to the U.S. economy each year. To put into perspective, in terms of direct spending, $0.56 of every dollar spent in the U.S. in 2018 was attributable to the 50+ population. That amount is expected to increase to $0.61 by year 2050.
