As colder weather moves into Nassau County this evening, Nassau County Fire Rescue reminds everyone to take extra precautions to stay warm—and stay safe.
Fireplace Safety:
- Have your chimney inspected and cleaned before use
- Always use a screen to keep sparks from escaping
- Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it’s completely out before going to bed.
- Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, such as bedding, curtains, or furniture
- Plug heaters directly into the wall—never into extension cords or power strips
- Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
Cold weather is also a great time to review your home evacuation plan. Make sure every member of your household knows two ways out of each room and a safe meeting place outside. Learn how to plan your escape plan here.
Stay warm, stay alert, and stay safe tonight, Nassau County!
