Commissioner A.M. "Hupp" Huppmann; Brian LaVacca, Chief Administrative Officer for the Council on Aging; Linda Lavin, Chief Executive Officer for ElderSource; and ElderSource Treasurer Shelley Hirsch Honoring older Americans is about recognizing the people who have helped build and strengthen our communities, while continuing to share their wisdom, experience, and resilience. Older Americans Month is a time to celebrate those lasting contributions and reaffirm our commitment to supporting healthy, independent aging.
During the May 11th Board of County Commissioners meeting, the Nassau County Board proclaimed May as Older Americans Month, with this year’s national theme, “Champion Your Health.” The proclamation was accepted by representatives from ElderSource and the Nassau County Council on Aging. both of which help which help connect older adults and caregivers across Northeast Florida to essential services and support.
The theme highlights the importance of helping older adults and caregivers maintain physical, mental, and emotional well-being, while also recognizing the challenges many face, such as managing chronic conditions, navigating care systems, and addressing social isolation.
Through programs like nutrition services, caregiver support, wellness initiatives, and home, and community-based care, agencies like ElderSource and the Nassau County Council on Aging help to ensure older adults can live with independence and dignity.
The Board also recognizes the vital role of caregivers, both family and professional, and the strong partnerships across Nassau County that help support aging residents.
Throughout May, residents are encouraged to recognize the value of older adults, support caregivers, and Champion Your Health by connecting with available programs and resources that promote healthy, independent living.
