Commissioner Klynt Farmer presents a proclamation to resident Amber Lee. Also pictured is Amber's husband, Dalton Lee. At its April 27, 2026 meeting, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners adopted a proclamation recognizing May 2026 as Celiac Disease Awareness Month.
The proclamation brings attention to celiac disease as a serious genetic autoimmune disorder affecting an estimated three million Americans, many of whom remain undiagnosed. It outlines the significant health impacts of the disease, including damage to the small intestine and potential long-term complications, as well as the challenges of diagnosis, which can take an average of four years. The Board also noted that there is no cure, and the only treatment is a strict lifelong gluten-free diet, which may not fully resolve symptoms for all individuals.
During the meeting, resident Amber Lee accepted the proclamation on behalf of those affected by celiac disease. A sufferer of the condition herself, Lee thanked the Board, stating, “thank you to the board for providing a platform to raise awareness for something that not only affects me but many individuals throughout the community.”
Through the proclamation, the Board encouraged residents to increase their understanding of celiac disease and support ongoing efforts to raise awareness, improve diagnosis, and advance research toward better treatments and a cure.
