​Nassau County is proud to announce the grand opening of Fire Rescue Station 90 with a Dedication Ceremony scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The new station is located at 3195 County Road 2 in Hilliard and represents a significant investment in public safety for residents in the western part of the county.
 
Constructed by Acon Construction, this modern, 10,891-square-foot facility is built to support day-to-day operations and emergency response. The station includes 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half bathrooms, a full kitchen, living area, and an exercise room for on-duty personnel. It also features four apparatus bays equipped to house an engine, rescue unit, and tanker, as well as a brush truck to allow crews to quickly respond to wildfires in rural Nassau.
 
Nassau County Fire Chief Brady Rigdon stated, “This new Fire Station 90 replaces an outdated facility that had faithfully served our community for many years. Our firefighters deserve a safe, modern space that supports their important work, and this station delivers just that. More importantly, it allows us to serve the residents of this area from a much nicer facility with enhanced capabilities. This investment will benefit our community for many years to come.”
 
Station 90 is one of three fire stations recently completed along with Station 70 on Nassauville Road and Station 10 on Edwards Road.  Together, these new facilities reflect the Board of County Commissioners’ strong commitment to public safety and proactive investment in critical infrastructure. By strategically expanding and modernizing fire rescue resources across the county, the BOCC is ensuring that residents receive faster response times, improved service, and enhanced protection for years to come.
 
Chair Alyson McCullough stated, “We are incredibly proud of the progress the County has made in enhancing public safety for our residents. Fire Station 90 is a clear example of our commitment to providing first responders with the tools and facilities they need to serve effectively. This investment not only supports our firefighters, but also ensures our community is well-protected now and into the future. It’s also a tangible example of tax dollars at work, thoughtfully used to strengthen services and infrastructure that benefit every resident.”

​At the Wednesday, March 18, 2026 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners recognized John Lain on his retirement from Nassau County Fire Rescue after 25+ years of dedicated service.

John began his employment with Nassau County on October 23, 2000, as a Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). He was promoted to Firefighter/Paramedic in June 2001, and later to the position of Engineer in November 2023. John served with distinction in this role until his retirement in March 2026, consistently demonstrating professionalism, dedication, and a commitment to the safety and well-being of Nassau County residents.

The BOCC thanks John for his years of service, his leadership, and the countless lives he has touched throughout his career. We wish him all the best in this next chapter of life.

​The Board of County Commissioners has released a new promotional video highlighting its commitment to thoughtful station planning and the continued expansion of EMS services to meet the needs of a growing community. The video emphasizes the County’s proactive approach to ensuring Fire Rescue infrastructure keeps pace with development, helping position Nassau County for long-term public safety success.

The video also features heartfelt testimonials from Nassau County Fire Rescue personnel who share why they chose to answer the call to serve and what it means to protect the community they call home. Their stories reflect a strong sense of purpose, teamwork, and dedication. Above all, the video celebrates the exceptional work performed each day by our public safety professionals, whose unwavering commitment helps keep Nassau County safe.

At the Wednesday, December 17, 2025 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners recognized three firefighters in honor of their upcoming retirements following years of dedicated service to Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR).

Matt Waggoner began his career with Nassau County on January 29, 2000, as a Firefighter/Paramedic, providing advanced medical care and emergency fire response to residents throughout the community. On June 16, 2001, he was promoted to the position of Engineer, a role in which he was responsible for driving and operating fire apparatus, managing water pump operations, and ensuring all equipment was prepared and ready for emergency response.

Matt announced his retirement effective January 2, 2026 after 25 years of service. He will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by the residents of Nassau County who have benefited from his years of service and commitment to public safety.

In addition to Engineer Waggoner, two other NCFR employees were recognized for their upcoming retirements, though they were unable to attend the meeting: Engineer Bradley Pierson, retiring after more than 25 years of service, and Engineer William Davis, retiring after 21 years of service.

The Board of County Commissioners commends Engineers Waggoner, Pierson, and Davis for their outstanding dedication and years of service, and extends best wishes to all three for continued success, health, and happiness in their well-earned retirement.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management recently reminded residents to remain vigilant about wildfire prevention as much of the state experiences drier-than-normal conditions. While several neighboring counties have already implemented burn bans, Nassau County currently does not currently have one in effect. However, Fire Chief Brady Rigdon is closely monitoring conditions and urges the community to take proactive steps to protect lives and property. Simple precautions such as avoiding activities that could ignite sparks or open flames, maintaining clear defensible space, and keeping fire safety equipment readily accessible, can make a significant difference in preventing wildfires. By staying aware and taking these simple steps, every resident can help keep Nassau County safe from wildfire risks.

As colder weather moves into Nassau County this evening, Nassau County Fire Rescue reminds everyone to take extra precautions to stay warm—and stay safe.

Fireplace Safety:

• Have your chimney inspected and cleaned before use
• Always use a screen to keep sparks from escaping
• Never leave a fire unattended, and make sure it’s completely out before going to bed.

Space Heater Safety:

• Keep heaters at least three feet away from anything that can burn, such as bedding, curtains, or furniture
• Plug heaters directly into the wall—never into extension cords or power strips
• Turn them off when you leave the room or go to sleep.

Family Safety Planning:

Cold weather is also a great time to review your home evacuation plan. Make sure every member of your household knows two ways out of each room and a safe meeting place outside. Learn how to plan your escape plan here.

Nassau County Fire Rescue has partnered with the Barnabas Center to host a Thanksgiving Food Drive, and are collecting non-perishable food donations now through November 24th at any Nassau County fire station.

If crews are out on a call when you stop by, please feel free to leave your donation safely at the front door of the station.

Let’s come together as a community to ensure no family goes hungry this Thanksgiving. Every donation makes a difference!

At the Wednesday, October 15, 2025 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized several employees on employment milestones, all of which have a combined 125 years of service to Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) and the residents of Nassau County.

First to be recognized was Engineer John Lain of Station 90 in Hilliard who is celebrating 25 years of service. A second-generation firefighter, John proudly follows in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Captain with Jacksonville Fire Rescue. In addition to serving Nassau County, John dedicated 21 years to serving his country in the United States Navy. He is married to his wife, Dawn, and enjoys spending his free time hunting and fishing.

Next to be recognized was Lieutenant David “Buddy” Lee, who serves out of Station 20 on Amelia Island and is celebrating 25 years of service with Nassau County Fire Rescue. Buddy serves on the department’s Apparatus Committee, where he oversees the design of vehicles purchased by NCFR, and has been instrumental in establishing the department’s marine operations. He is married to his wife, Michelle, and they have two children, Michael and Jessica. In his free time, Buddy enjoys playing pickleball and golf.

Last but certainly not least, the BOCC recognized Captain Adam Salzburg, who is also celebrating 25 years of service. Adam serves at the new Station 70 on Old Nassauville Road, and was instrumental in overseeing the construction of that new facility Adam also plays an active role in training Nassau County Fire Rescue members in marine and water rescue operations. He has been married to his wife, Mandy, for 17 years, and together they have four children, two grandchildren, and one more on the way. When he’s not working or spending time with family, Adam enjoys flying as a licensed pilot.

Captain Brian Sloan and Engineer Bradley Pierson, both of which are also celebrating 25 years of service.  Both men have spent their careers serving Nassau County Fire Rescue with professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to protecting their community. Their decades of experience and leadership have made a lasting impact on the department and the citizens they serve.

The Board of County Commissioners and all Nassau County residents extend their heartfelt thanks to these dedicated firefighters. Their years of service, leadership, and commitment to the safety and well-being of the community are deeply appreciated. Nassau County is stronger, safer, and better because of their unwavering dedication.

10/10/25 @ 10:00 a.m. - In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, we want to take a moment to highlight one of the County’s most valuable educational tools,  the Fire Safety Education Simulator. Acquired in 2024 through a Federal Grant in partnership with the City of Fernandina Beach, this 27-foot trailer brings fire safety lessons to life through hands-on learning.

The simulator is designed to provide an immersive educational experience that engages participants in critical thinking, physical activity, and hazard recognition. Using advanced programming and a state-of-the-art table control system, it can replicate a variety of real-world emergencies . From kitchen fires to severe weather events, each scenario allows participants to safely practice how to respond in high-stress situations.

This interactive tool is used at schools, community events, and public demonstrations to help residents of all ages learn how to prevent fires, react quickly, and stay safe during emergencies. It’s a fun, memorable, and potentially life-saving experience for the whole community.

It's Fire Prevention Week and this year's theme is "Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home". This campaign stresses how important it is to buy, charge and recycle lithium-ion batteries safely.  

Charge Into Fire Safety: Three Steps

Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.

Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged. 

Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location.

​Over the past several fiscal years, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has been making critical investments into the County’s fire stations and equipment. Recent improvements include two new stations in 2025 including Station 70 on Nassauville Road and Station 10 on Edwards Road, as well as the replacement of Station 90 which is currently under construction in Hilliard and is anticipated to open before the end of 2025.

Continuing the commitment to strengthen fire and rescue services, the BOCC is proud to announce that they have reached a new agreement with the Nassau County Fire-Rescue Professionals Local Union #3101 International Association of Firefighters. The new three-year agreement, approved on Monday, September 22, 2025, will extend through September 2028 and accomplishes a key priority of both parties to increase the starting firefighter pay from $14.7601/hour up to $19.2858/hour.

BOCC Chairman A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann stated, “Our firefighters place themselves in harm’s way every day to protect and serve this community, and they deserve the best compensation and resources we can provide them in the execution of those duties. I'm grateful to the leadership of Local 3101 for coming to an agreement that not only not only supports our first responders but also ensures that Nassau County can continue to attract and retain highly qualified professionals to keep our residents safe.”

This new agreement was made possible through increased efficiencies in other operations, which have allowed the County to prioritize Nassau County Fire Rescue without compromising its commitment to taxpayers. In fact, the Board recently approved its fifth consecutive millage rate reduction for Fiscal Year 2025/2026, balancing fiscal responsibility with essential public safety needs and further demonstrating the BOCC’s commitment to a safe, resilient, and thriving place for families, businesses, and future generations.

The BOCC extends its appreciation to the leadership and members of Local 3101 for their partnership throughout this process, as their collaboration was instrumental in reaching an agreement that strengthens both the fire service and the community it serves.
