At the Wednesday, October 15, 2025 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized several employees on employment milestones, all of which have a combined 125 years of service to Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) and the residents of Nassau County.

First to be recognized was Engineer John Lain of Station 90 in Hilliard who is celebrating 25 years of service. A second-generation firefighter, John proudly follows in the footsteps of his father, who served as a Captain with Jacksonville Fire Rescue. In addition to serving Nassau County, John dedicated 21 years to serving his country in the United States Navy. He is married to his wife, Dawn, and enjoys spending his free time hunting and fishing.

Next to be recognized was Lieutenant David “Buddy” Lee, who serves out of Station 20 on Amelia Island and is celebrating 25 years of service with Nassau County Fire Rescue. Buddy serves on the department’s Apparatus Committee, where he oversees the design of vehicles purchased by NCFR, and has been instrumental in establishing the department’s marine operations. He is married to his wife, Michelle, and they have two children, Michael and Jessica. In his free time, Buddy enjoys playing pickleball and golf.

Last but certainly not least, the BOCC recognized Captain Adam Salzburg, who is also celebrating 25 years of service. Adam serves at the new Station 70 on Old Nassauville Road, and was instrumental in overseeing the construction of that new facility Adam also plays an active role in training Nassau County Fire Rescue members in marine and water rescue operations. He has been married to his wife, Mandy, for 17 years, and together they have four children, two grandchildren, and one more on the way. When he’s not working or spending time with family, Adam enjoys flying as a licensed pilot.

Captain Brian Sloan and Engineer Bradley Pierson, both of which are also celebrating 25 years of service.  Both men have spent their careers serving Nassau County Fire Rescue with professionalism, integrity, and a deep commitment to protecting their community. Their decades of experience and leadership have made a lasting impact on the department and the citizens they serve.

The Board of County Commissioners and all Nassau County residents extend their heartfelt thanks to these dedicated firefighters. Their years of service, leadership, and commitment to the safety and well-being of the community are deeply appreciated. Nassau County is stronger, safer, and better because of their unwavering dedication.

10/10/25 @ 10:00 a.m. - In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, we want to take a moment to highlight one of the County’s most valuable educational tools,  the Fire Safety Education Simulator. Acquired in 2024 through a Federal Grant in partnership with the City of Fernandina Beach, this 27-foot trailer brings fire safety lessons to life through hands-on learning.

The simulator is designed to provide an immersive educational experience that engages participants in critical thinking, physical activity, and hazard recognition. Using advanced programming and a state-of-the-art table control system, it can replicate a variety of real-world emergencies . From kitchen fires to severe weather events, each scenario allows participants to safely practice how to respond in high-stress situations.

This interactive tool is used at schools, community events, and public demonstrations to help residents of all ages learn how to prevent fires, react quickly, and stay safe during emergencies. It’s a fun, memorable, and potentially life-saving experience for the whole community.

It's Fire Prevention Week and this year's theme is "Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home". This campaign stresses how important it is to buy, charge and recycle lithium-ion batteries safely.  

Charge Into Fire Safety: Three Steps

Buy only listed products. When buying a product that uses a lithium-ion battery look for a safety certification mark such as UL, ETL, or CSA. This means it meets important safety standards.

Charge devices safely. Always use the cords that came with the product to charge. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer. Buy new chargers from the manufacturer or one that the manufacturer has approved. Charge your device on a hard surface. Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when it’s fully charged. 

Recycle batteries responsibly. Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location.

​Over the past several fiscal years, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has been making critical investments into the County’s fire stations and equipment. Recent improvements include two new stations in 2025 including Station 70 on Nassauville Road and Station 10 on Edwards Road, as well as the replacement of Station 90 which is currently under construction in Hilliard and is anticipated to open before the end of 2025.

Continuing the commitment to strengthen fire and rescue services, the BOCC is proud to announce that they have reached a new agreement with the Nassau County Fire-Rescue Professionals Local Union #3101 International Association of Firefighters. The new three-year agreement, approved on Monday, September 22, 2025, will extend through September 2028 and accomplishes a key priority of both parties to increase the starting firefighter pay from $14.7601/hour up to $19.2858/hour.

BOCC Chairman A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann stated, “Our firefighters place themselves in harm’s way every day to protect and serve this community, and they deserve the best compensation and resources we can provide them in the execution of those duties. I'm grateful to the leadership of Local 3101 for coming to an agreement that not only not only supports our first responders but also ensures that Nassau County can continue to attract and retain highly qualified professionals to keep our residents safe.”

This new agreement was made possible through increased efficiencies in other operations, which have allowed the County to prioritize Nassau County Fire Rescue without compromising its commitment to taxpayers. In fact, the Board recently approved its fifth consecutive millage rate reduction for Fiscal Year 2025/2026, balancing fiscal responsibility with essential public safety needs and further demonstrating the BOCC’s commitment to a safe, resilient, and thriving place for families, businesses, and future generations.

The BOCC extends its appreciation to the leadership and members of Local 3101 for their partnership throughout this process, as their collaboration was instrumental in reaching an agreement that strengthens both the fire service and the community it serves.

9/18/25 @ 9:00 a.m. - At the Wednesday, September 17, 2025 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized three employees for outstanding years of service and dedication to Nassau County. 

First to be recognized was Engineer Jamie Deonas who is celebrating 30 years of service this month. He currently works out of Station 20 on Amelia Island and drives the fire engine on the C-shift. Chief Brady Rigdon stated, "When I first started here, he was one of the first people to reach out to me and I appreciated that. Thank you for 30 years of service." Engineer Deonas then shared a story about the beginning of his career with Nassau County stating, "It's been a fun adventure, starting from the beginning to now, and I thank you very much for this recognition."

Next, the BOCC recognized was Battalion Chief Jeff Dodd who is celebrating 25 years of service. Currently, Battalion Chief Dodd works on the B-shift out of Station 60 in Bryceville. He is a member of NCFR's Quality Assurance Committee and serves as the Honor Guard Commander. Battalion Chief Dodd is also the Chairman of NCFR's annual awards ceremony. Chief Brady Rigdon stated, "Jeff, thank you for 25 years of service to Nassau County and thank you for all you do for public safety." Battalion Chief Dodd addressed the BOCC stating, "I'm here by the grace of God. Thank you very much for the ability to do this job. Not many people can say they love to do their job but I can still say that, so thank you."

Lt. Rob Widdows is also celebrating 25 years of service but unfortunately was unable to attend the meeting. Lt. Widdows serves on Engine 20 on the C-shift and has been a dedicated member of NCFR throughout his career. Chief Rigdon recognized Lt. Widdows’ contributions, noting his commitment to the department and the community over the years. 

The BOCC is proud to honor Engineer Jamie Deonas, Battalion Chief Jeff Dodd, and Lieutenant Rob Widdows for their years of dedicated service. Their professionalism, commitment, and sacrifice embody the highest standards of public service, and their contributions have made a lasting impact on Nassau County Fire Rescue and the community as a whole. The BOCC extends its deepest gratitude and congratulations to each of them on these remarkable career milestones.

9/17/25 @ 2:00 p.m. - At today's meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) recognized Gary "Scott" Hemmingway on his upcoming retirement after 30+ years of service. Hired as a part-time Firefighter/Emergency Management Technician (EMT) on April 25, 1995, Scott has served in a variety of positions throughout his career including Engineer/EMT; Engineer/Paramedic; Lieutenant; Assistant Fire Chief, and Fire Inspector/Investigator. 

Chief Brady Rigdon thanked Scott for his service stating, "When I started here, Scott was the Assistant Chief. He guided me, stood beside me and helped me get my feet on the ground, and I appreciated that. Thank you, Scott, for all you've done for the County, and thank you for 30 years." 

Scott also took the podium stating, "Thank you to the Board for the recognition this morning and thank God for keeping me safe for 30 years. Thank God for keeping my family safe while I was away from home."  He thanked his wife for her unwavering support and for caring for their family during the long hours he spent serving the community, often working shifts lasting up to 48 hours.

Scott will retire from Nassau County Fire Rescue on October 3, 2025, and will be greatly missed by the BOCC, his fellow firefighters and paramedics, and the citizens of Nassau County who benefited from his decades of commitment and service.

The Board of County Commissioners and Nassau County Animal Services would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the International Association of Firefighters – Local 3101 (Nassau County Fire Rescue) for sponsoring this weekend’s adoption event at Petco in Yulee. Thanks to their generosity, adoption fees of up to $500 were covered, pet beds and supplies were purchased. Member of Nassau County Fire Rescue came out in person to walk dogs, interact with potential adopters, and spread the word about giving shelter pets a second chance.

Because of their efforts, 10 animals found loving new homes! Partnerships like these make an incredible difference for our community, showing how much can be accomplished when local organizations come together for a shared cause. Local 3101 went above and beyond, not only providing financial support, but also dedicating their time and energy to help our shelter pets. We are truly grateful for their commitment to both public service and animal welfare.

At the Monday, August 25, 2025 meeting, Nassau County Fire Rescue Professionals Local 3101 made a generous donation to Imagine Nassau to support a new facility for Nassau County Animal Services. 

Imagine Nassau is the Board of County Commissioners’ (BOCC) nonprofit organization created to foster charitable and educational activities through fundraising and grants in four key areas: Nassau County Parks & Recreation, Nassau County Animal Services, Nassau County Fire Rescue, and the Conservation Land Acquisition and Management (CLAM) Program.

In December 2022, a needs assessment was conducted for a new animal shelter. The study analyzed the existing facility, explored potential future use options, and identified long-term funding strategies.  In June 2024, the BOCC closed on a 6.76-acre property on State Road 200, chosen for its central location and high visibility. 

The future new facility will provide a healthier environment for animals and expand capacity to meet future growth. Features will include separate lobbies for intakes and adoptions, adoption galleries, isolation rooms, puppy play yards, walking trails, a cattery, quarantine areas, administrative offices, and even a barn for housing large animals.

The BOCC extends its deepest appreciation to Local 3101 for their generosity and continued commitment to the community. Their support goes beyond their service as first responders. It reflects a true dedication to improving quality of life for both residents and animals across Nassau County. This donation is an inspiring example of how community partnerships can make lasting impacts.

The future Nassau County Animal Services facility is currently being designed. Stay tuned for details on a capital campaign to support the construction.

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony on August 22, 2025, to celebrate the grand opening of the newly constructed Station 70 for Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR), located at 942456 Old Nassauville Road in Fernandina Beach.

This modern, state-of-the-art facility replaces the former Station 70 previously located at State Road 200 and Old Nassauville Road. The new station represents a significant investment in public safety infrastructure and is designed to better serve the growing needs of the community.

The completion of Station 70 reflects the BOCC’s ongoing strategic priority to enhance public safety and ensuring that residents and visitors have access to the highest level of emergency services.

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony today to celebrate the grand opening of the newly constructed Station 70 for Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) located at 942456 Old Nassauville Road, Fernandina Beach. This state-of-the-art facility replaces the former station located on State Road 200 at Old Nassauville Road and represents a significant investment in public safety infrastructure.

Station 70 was designed to meet modern national standards and to provide a safe, functional, and comfortable work environment for Nassau County’s dedicated first responders. The new facility supports 24/7 operations and includes 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half bathrooms, a full kitchen, a spacious living room, and an exercise room to promote physical fitness and overall wellness for the crew.

The ceremony began with a welcome from BOCC Chairman and District Two Commissioner Hupp Huppmann, an invocation by State Representative Dean Black, and a flag presentation by the NCFR Honor Guard.

Chairman Huppmann celebrated the milestone, stating, "This achievement reflects the Board of County Commissioners’ (BOCC) strategic priority to enhance public safety. Our first responders are among the most committed and selfless members of our community. They work long hours, face dangerous situations, and they’re the ones running towards danger while everyone else is running away. They deserve a facility that supports their needs and reflects the importance of the work they do every day. We trust that this station will serve the community well for many years to come and that the facility will enhance the health, morale and effectiveness of the emergency personnel who serve here.”

NCFR Fire Chief Brady Rigdon shared the history of the project, which included the property purchase, the awarding of the construction bid, and the groundbreaking held on February 12, 2024. “This station is an awesome addition to the Nassau County Fire Rescue Department and it’s a tremendous improvement from the housing situation crews were living in,” he remarked.

Chief Rigdon expressed gratitude to the BOCC for its steadfast support of public safety, and recognized the contributions of key county leadership and project partners, including County Manager Taco Pope, Assistant County Manager Taco Pope, Deputy County Manager Robert Companion, County Attorney Denise May, Public Works Director Doug Podiak, and Frank Anderson of ACON Construction.

Following the ribbon cutting, attendees were invited to tour the new facility.

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., a Dedication Ceremony and Ribbon Cutting will be held in celebration of the grand opening of Nassau County Fire Rescue Station 70, located at 942456 Old Nassauville Road, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.

The Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on February 12, 2024, and Nassau County Fire Rescue (NCFR) personnel officially began working out of the station on Friday, July 25, 2025. This new modern facility consists of 8,453 square feet and features three bays with an engine, rescue unit, and tanker. To allow crews to remain ready 24/7, Station 70 contains 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half bathrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and an exercise room.

Station 70 will be the second NCFR station to open in 2025 and further signifies the BOCC’s commitment to enhancing public safety and providing new, modern facilities for the brave men and women serving the community. Station 90 in Hilliard is also currently under construction and is anticipated to open before the end of 2025. The new Station 90 will replace the current facility on County Road 2.

Nassau County Chairman Huppmann stated, “The new station 70 provides our emergency personnel with a state-of-the-art facility and ensures a superb level of fire and emergency medical services to our citizens for decades to come. This investment not only strengthens our ability to respond quickly in times of crisis, it also reflects our deep commitment to protecting lives and property. By placing modern resources where they are most needed, we are enhancing safety and providing our first responders with the tools and environment they need to serve our growing community with excellence.”

On Friday, July 25, 2025, Nassau County Fire Rescue officially began operating out of the brand-new Station 70, located at the corner of Nassauville Road and Hardy Allen Road. The 8,453 sq. ft. facility features three apparatus bays housing an engine, rescue unit, and tanker. It also includes 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, and exercise room, providing firefighters with the space and resources needed to serve the community effectively.

This is the second of two new fire stations completed in 2025, further demonstrating Nassau County’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety and ensuring fast, reliable emergency response for its residents.

We look forward to celebrating this important milestone with the community during a Ribbon Cutting and Station Dedication Ceremony in August.

7/22/25 @ 3:45 p.m. - Nassau County Fire Rescue and Nassau County Animal Services have teamed up to raise awareness about the wonderful pets waiting for their forever homes. Today, NCAS visited NCFR Station 10, where firefighters were all smiles as they spent time playing with adoptable dogs and cats. Partnerships like this highlight our County's commitment to caring for animals in need. 

We appreciate the efforts of NCAS for caring for animals at the shelter and doing all they can to find them safe, happy homes. We are also grateful to NCFR for showing these pets so much love today and for helping spread the word about local animals in search of their forever families.

CPR training is crucial because it equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to respond to a cardiac arrest emergency, significantly increasing a person’s chance of survival by maintaining blood flow to the brain and preventing or minimizing brain damage.

This video highlights the outstanding efforts of Hands4Hearts, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving community awareness of sudden cardiac arrest through education and support. Hands4Hearts relies on volunteers—many of whom are experienced medical professionals who have witnessed firsthand the impact of sudden cardiac arrest—to help advance its mission.

Hear powerful testimonies from real survivors sharing how CPR saved their lives, along with an inspiring story of a couple whose quick actions saved a woman in a local restaurant. Lastly, retired Critical Care Paramedic Jim Bollenbacher discusses the importance of CPR and how Hands4Hearts is spreading awareness throughout Nassau County through hands-only CPR classes and community education events.
