  • Carry a flashlight or glow sticks so drivers can see you
Stay Safe on the Streets:

  • Avoid running across streets or between parked cars
Check Your Treats:
  • Only eat factory-sealed candy
  • Inspect all treats at home before eating
Costume Safety:

Breast Cancer Awareness Week and Pink Day

10/28/2025

10/28/25 @ 2:00 p.m.

At the Monday, October 27, 2025 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved a Proclamation declaring the week of October 26 – November 1, 2025, as Breast Cancer Awareness Week in Nassau County, and Wednesday, October 29, 2025, as Pink Day.

Breast cancer touches the lives of Americans from every background and community. Besides skin cancer, it is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, impacting 1 in 8 women. While rare, breast cancer also affects men, with an estimated 2,790 men expected to be diagnosed this year.
In attendance for the reading of the Proclamation were three inspiring breast cancer survivors: County employees Kelly Sturges and Jenny Tarpley, and Ashley Murray, wife of County employee George Murray.  Their presence served as a powerful reminder of the importance of early detection, ongoing research, and community support for those affected by this disease.

Kelly Sturges shared her story of discovering invasive breast cancer at 40 during her first, routine mammogram, stating, " My personal story is a testament to the importance of early detection. My very first mammogram detected breast cancer at 40 years old. I had no symptoms, I had no family history, no lumps that I could feel. The type of cancer I had was invasive, but because of early detection, I was able to take action before it could spread.  Last Friday, I went to my first survivorship appointment and it's now been five years since that first mammogram."  Kelly expressed her gratitude to the BOCC for providing great health insurance, however she reminded everyone that there are programs available to those who don't have insurance.  "Tell your wife, tell your daughters, tell your sisters and friends that early detection saves lives".
This week, we encourage everyone to take part in activities that promote breast cancer awareness and to wear pink on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in remembrance of those we have lost, in celebration of the survivors, and in support of those who continue to fight.

As sea turtle nesting season comes to a close, we want to thank our residents, visitors, and beachgoers for doing their part to protect these amazing creatures.

Your efforts, turning off beachfront lights, keeping beaches clean, filling in holes, and removing obstacles, help ensure that hatchlings make it safely to the ocean.

We also hope everyone enjoyed our weekly Turtle Talk Tuesday posts this season! It’s been wonderful sharing fun facts, nesting updates, and tips on how we can all make a difference.

With nesting season ending on October 31st, normal beach lighting rules resume November 1st, but we encourage everyone to continue being mindful of our coastal wildlife year-round.

Thank you for helping keep Nassau County’s beaches safe for sea turtles!

10/27/25 @ 2:30 p.m. - On Friday, October 24, 2025, Nassau County  Parks & Recreation hosted the 5th Annual Halloween Festival.  The event was a frightfully fun with an estimated 3,000 ghouls, goblins, and ghosts throughout the 3-hour event.

Guests filled the park with laughter and costumes as they collected candy in our trick-or-treat alley, explored the kids zone, went on hayrides, enjoyed face painting and grabbing bites from the food trucks or Yulee Little League Concession Stand.  Some also danced the night away in the gymnasium for our Spooky Silent Disco.

A big thank you to Parks & Recreation Director Jay Robertson and members of the County staff who made this event possible.  A massive thank you as well to our community partners who helped fill trick-or-treat alley will candy and Halloween spirit.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us and make this year’s festival one to remember. Your smiles and spooky costumes are what make our community so special!

Resident Receives New Home Through SHIP Program

10/21/2025

10/22/25 @ 1:30 p.m.

On Monday, October 13, 2025, Nassau County resident Alice Roberts received the keys to her brand new home, facilitated by the County utilizing State Housing Initiative Partnership (SHIP) funds. Established by the passage of the 1992 William E. Sadowski Affordable Housing Act, the SHIP program provides affordable housing assistance to very-low, low, and moderate-income families who meet all the requirements outlined in Florida Statute, Section 420.907, Administrative Code 67-37 and Nassau County's Local Housing Assistance Plan (LHAP).

Prior to applying for the SHIP Program, Ms. Roberts resided in a 1,072 square foot block home which was over 70 years old.  The home had damaged siding and floors, a deteriorating foundation, outdated electrical and a failing septic system.  A licensed contractor conducted a thorough inspection of home and determined that the cost to rehabilitate the home was prohibitive due to its condition and outdated systems. The original structure was replaced with a new, modern 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom home featuring a dedicated utility room for a washer and dryer, as well as upgraded features such as central air and heating and a new septic system. Additionally, the home is equipped with energy-efficient appliances, including a refrigerator, stove, and water heater, significantly improving the home's livability, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.

Nassau County's SHIP Program is currently administered by Margie Drawdy, Financial Management & Budget Coordinator for the Office of Management & Budget. Margie has worked for Nassau County for over 20 years but has only served in this capacity since December 2024. Following completion of Ms. Albertie's home Margie stated, "It was a pleasure working with Ms. Roberts. She has been patiently waiting to move into her new home and has expressed deep appreciation for the SHIP Program. As someone who is new to the SHIP administrative position, I find each project exciting and rewarding. This particular home marks the second completed by Eason Development under the SHIP Program, and I can’t say enough positive things about their team. Their commitment to completing projects in a timely manner and working closely with applicants to ensure satisfaction is truly commendable."

We are grateful to Eason Development for their hard work and dedication. Thanks to their outstanding efforts, construction was completed in 98 days, allowing her to move into her new home just in time for the holiday season.

About SHIP Funds
SHIP funds are awarded annually based on allocation of funding by the State of Florida. Nassau County is proud to offer the SHIP Program to make safe, efficient, and affordable housing possible for residents like Ms. Roberts.
