If you wish to vote by mail, your request for a Vote-by-Mail ballot must be received by the Nassau County Supervisor of Elections by 5:00 p.m. on August 6.

Early Voting: August 6–15
Early voting will be available throughout Nassau County from August 6 through August 15.

​During its July 27, 2026 meeting, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners proudly issued a proclamation recognizing July 25 through August 1, 2026 as Gullah/Geechee Nation Appreciation Week in Nassau County.

The proclamation was presented to Queen Quet, Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, and Glenda Simmons Jenkins, in recognition of their unwavering commitment to preserving, promoting, and celebrating the rich history, heritage, and culture of the Gullah/Geechee people. Through decades of advocacy, education, and cultural stewardship, their efforts have helped ensure that the traditions, stories, and contributions of the Gullah/Geechee Nation continue to be shared with future generations.

The Board extends its sincere appreciation to Queen Quet and the other members of the Gullah/Geechee Nation for keeping these important cultural traditions alive and for their dedication to honoring the legacy of the Gullah/Geechee people. Their leadership continues to inspire greater awareness and appreciation throughout Nassau County and beyond.

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) celebrated the completion of Hornets Drive (formerly the William Burgess Boulevard Extension) with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by County Commissioners, County staff, project partners, elected officials, and members of the community.

The ceremony began with welcoming remarks from Board Chair Alyson McCullough, followed by District 3 Commissioner Jeff Gray, who recognized the project as a significant investment in Nassau County's future.

"Today marks an exciting milestone for Nassau County and, more specifically, for the Yulee community," said Commissioner Gray. "This project represents years of planning, coordination, and investment in our transportation network to better serve our residents today and prepare for the growth we know is coming tomorrow."

Nassau County School Superintendent Dr. Kathy Burns also spoke, reflecting on the many years the school district and community envisioned this connection and the positive impact it will have on traffic circulation and access for Yulee Middle School and Yulee High School.

Hornets Drive creates a new connection between U.S. 17 and Miner Road, providing an additional east-west corridor that improves connectivity throughout the Yulee area. By offering motorists an alternative route south of State Road 200, the roadway will help distribute traffic across the transportation network, improve mobility, and alleviate congestion near local schools during peak arrival and dismissal times.

The project also features a 10-foot shared-use path, expanding opportunities for residents, students, and visitors to safely walk or bike through the area while supporting Nassau County's commitment to multimodal transportation.

"Hornets Drive is more than a roadway," Commissioner Gray said. "It is an investment in safety, connectivity, and the future of Nassau County."

The Board of County Commissioners extends its sincere appreciation to the Capital Projects Management Department, the project engineers, inspectors, utility partners, Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors, subcontractors, and the Florida Department of Transportation for the collaboration required to bring this project to completion, including the installation of the new traffic signal at U.S. 17.

The contractor will spend the next week completing a concrete separator before the roadway opens to the public. Hornets Drive is scheduled to open in time for the first day of school on Monday, August 10. Upon opening, both the roadway and the 10-foot shared-use path will be accessible from U.S. 17 and Miner Road, providing an important new transportation connection for the community. The sidewalk on the south side of the roadway will remain temporarily closed while final construction activities are completed.

The Board of County Commissioners thanks residents for their patience throughout construction and looks forward to the many benefits Hornets Drive will provide for years to come.

On Monday, July 27, 2026, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) held a budget workshop to review the tentative FY 2026-2027 budget and establish the maximum proposed millage rates. Based on the budget presented, the BOCC is advancing a structurally balanced budget which includes the sixth consecutive year of millage rate (property tax rate) reductions and second consecutive year of a total budget reduction. The tentative budget also includes the largest millage rate reduction in six years.

The tentative budget continues funding the critical Capital Improvement Plan, Pavement Management Plan, and Chip Seal Program, while also supporting critical public safety investments into the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and Nassau County Fire Rescue.

Recognizing both the needs of today’s residents and future economic pressures, the tentative budget focuses on enhancing quality of life while working within the restricted and limited revenues of the County.

As one of the fastest-growing counties in Florida and the nation, Nassau County continues to experience an increasing demand for public services. Population growth has created a need for additional service capacity, while residents seek improvements to roads, parks, drainage infrastructure, and public safety. The tentative budget reflects the BOCC’s continued commitment to meeting these needs by supporting the Sheriff’s Office, Fire Rescue, Emergency Operations, and roads through the Pavement Management Program, Chip Seal Program, Drainage Ditch Maintenance Program, and the development and enhancement of parks and athletic facilities.

The BOCC’s ongoing involvement in the budget process, including its annual Winter Strategic Planning Sessions, and regular review of County policies, continues to guide responsible financial planning. These efforts support a transparent and results-driven budgeting process that prioritizes fiscal responsibility, reduced millage rates, and improved services for Nassau County residents.

We're now more than halfway through the 2026 sea turtle nesting season, and it's shaping up to be one for the record books!

If you've visited Amelia Island's beaches lately, you've probably noticed sea turtle nests marked with stakes and yellow tape stretching up and down the shoreline, a welcome sign of another successful nesting season.

Here's how this year compares:

• 2025 (at this point): 133 nests (primarily loggerheads, with some green turtles), well below the historic average.
• 2026 (as of today): 285 nests , including 280 loggerhead nests and 5 green turtle nests.

This year's total is the second-highest on record, trailing only the remarkable 2019 season, when 301 nests were documented on Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch beaches. Volunteers have also recorded 192 false crawls, bringing the total number of adult sea turtle tracks observed along the island's 11.5 miles of monitored Atlantic shoreline to 477.

Sea turtle nesting numbers are up across Florida this year, following a statewide decline in loggerhead nesting during 2025. Loggerhead females typically nest 4 to 6 times during a season, laying nests about every two weeks before taking one to two years off, making 2026 an especially productive "on" year.

While nesting activity is beginning to slow, hatching season is just getting started. As hatchlings emerge under the cover of darkness and make their journey to the ocean, Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch volunteers monitor each nest. About three days after a nest has emerged, volunteers carefully excavate it to collect important data that helps researchers better understand nesting success.

The public is invited to attend many of these nest excavations and learn more about these incredible animals. Excavation schedules are posted throughout the season on the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch website.

And if you spot one of the organization's dedicated volunteers on the beach early in the morning wearing an Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch shirt, don't hesitate to say hello. They're always happy to answer questions and share information about the sea turtles that make Amelia Island their summer home.

​A new traffic signal has been installed at the intersection of U.S. 17/S.R. 5 and William Burgess Blvd. in Yulee and has now been  placed into flash mode as part of the final steps before full activation in the coming days.

Drivers should be aware of the following:

• Drivers traveling through U.S. 17/S.R. 5: You will encounter a flashing yellow signal, meaning slow down and proceed with caution.
• Drivers turning left from northbound U.S. 17/S.R. 5 onto William Burgess Blvd.: You will encounter a flashing red signal, meaning you must stop, yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians traveling through the intersection, and proceed only when the way is clear and safe.
• Drivers on William Burgess Blvd.: You will encounter a flashing red signal, meaning you must stop and proceed only when the intersection is clear and safe.

Please note: The new roadway connection east of U.S. 17/S.R. 5 remains under construction and is closed to all traffic at this time. The roadway is expected to open in the coming weeks once the signal is fully operational and remaining project items are complete.

The new signal is part of the Hornets Drive (formerly William Burgess Boulevard Extension) project, which will provide an important parallel route between U.S. 17/S.R. 5 and Miner Road to improve connectivity, enhance mobility, and help alleviate congestion in the Yulee area.

As another transportation improvement project nears completion in eastern Nassau County, we would like to provide an update on the developer-led roadway improvements at Chester Road and Heron Isles Parkway.

The project, which includes construction of the new roundabout, is being completed by the Wildlight developer as part of the transportation infrastructure required to support future growth. As with many large developments, roadway improvements are constructed by the developer in accordance with approved development agreements and traffic mitigation requirements designed to maintain mobility, enhance safety, and accommodate increasing travel demands as the area continues to grow.

Construction of the Chester Road improvements is now substantially complete, with only final punch list items remaining. Final landscaping is anticipated over the coming weeks, and all Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) devices are expected to be removed by August 1.

While the developer is responsible for constructing these required improvements, Nassau County's Development Services Division continues to coordinate with the developer and monitor the project's progress to help ensure the work is completed in accordance with approved development requirements. 

The County appreciates the community's patience throughout construction and looks forward to the successful completion of this important transportation improvement.

Work Completed This Week
Construction crews continued making progress on the Amelia Island Parkway & Buccaneer Trail Roundabout project with the following activities:

• Installation of conduit for the new streetlights began
• Grading and slope formation for ditch paving along the west side of the intersection.

These improvements support long-term drainage performance and prepare the site for permanent lighting, enhancing the safety and durability of the new roundabout.

Two-Week Look Ahead
Over the next two weeks, crews are expected to:

• Continue installing conduit for the new streetlights
• Complete ditch paving and ditch line excavation
• Place asphalt on the remaining sections of the shared-use path.

Update on Final Asphalt Placement
Due to longer-than-anticipated lead times for the concrete light poles, placement of the final asphalt surface (friction course) has been postponed until after the poles are installed. Completing the work in this sequence helps protect the finished pavement from damage caused by heavy installation equipment and ensures a higher-quality, longer-lasting roadway.

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners invites the community to celebrate the completion of Hornets Drive (formerly known as the William Burgess Boulevard Extension) during a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m.

The ceremony will take place just west of the Theresa Road roundabout, near the first set of benches. County staff will be on-site to assist with parking and direct attendees to the event location.

Hornets Drive represents a significant investment in Nassau County’s transportation network by creating a new connection between US 17 and Miner Road. This additional east-west corridor will improve connectivity throughout the Yulee area by providing motorists with an alternative route and helping distribute traffic more efficiently.

The new roadway is expected to help relieve congestion along Miner Road, particularly during peak school travel times near Yulee Middle School and Yulee High School, by providing additional access and improving traffic circulation in the area.

In addition to roadway improvements, Hornets Drive includes a 10-foot multipurpose path that enhances mobility options for pedestrians and bicyclists. The path provides a safer and more connected route for residents, students, and visitors while supporting Nassau County’s continued efforts to improve multimodal transportation opportunities.

While construction of Hornets Drive is complete, the roadway will not open to motorists immediately following the ribbon cutting ceremony. The new traffic signal at the intersection of US 17 and Hornets Drive is expected to begin flashing soon and become fully operational after the required testing period. Once the signal is operational and the contractor completes the remaining punch list items, the roadway is expected to open to traffic in the coming weeks.

The ribbon cutting ceremony marks the completion of an important infrastructure project that will enhance mobility, improve connectivity, and support the continued growth of Nassau County.

The Dog & Pickle is the first business to receive support through the RISE Program. Planned for Yulee, this innovative destination will feature a 21,500-square-foot dog park, six covered pickleball courts, and a covered deck and bar, creating a unique space for recreation, connection, and community.

We are proud to support local entrepreneurs like Alex and William Herrera as they bring their vision to life and contribute to Nassau County’s growing business community. Through programs like RISE, the County continues to foster entrepreneurship, encourage economic growth, and support the small businesses that help make Nassau County a great place to live and work.
