AlertNassau is part of Florida's Statewide Mass Notification System, a tool that helps public safety officials rapidly inform the public about local hazards and threats using telephone landlines for residences and businesses in the area at risk. Residents can "opt-in" to receive these public safety emergency alerts on their mobile phones by creating an AlertNassau user account and providing both their address and cellphone number.

The AlertNassau system includes an optional “smart weather alerts” service that allows residents with AlertNassau accounts to subscribe to customized National Weather Service watch/warning alerts for any location of interest (home, work, school, etc.) which can be sent to any phone, email, or an app. Users can select up to 90 severe weather conditions, such as tropical storm, flash flood, lightning, tornado, hurricane, hail, fire weather, hard freeze, coastal flood, and various marine advisories. The alert settings can be changed by the user anytime.

To sign up for alerts click here: https://member.everbridge.net/453003085611111/login

Emergency Management also offers text-only public safety alerts through the AlertNassau Nixle service. Just text the keyword ONENASSAU to 888777 to receive Emergency Management's alerts (not weather watches and warnings) on your cellphone. There is no charge to use Nixle, but Msg & Data rates for your cellular plan may apply. Message frequency varies.

Stay informed and stay safe, Nassau!

THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS PROPOSES FIFTH CONSECUTIVE YEAR OF REDUCED MILLAGE RATES

Nassau County, Florida, July 29, 2025  – On Monday, July 28, 2025, the Board of County Commissioners held a workshop to review the tentative budget and maximum millage rate for Fiscal Year 2025/2026. Based on the budget presented, the BOCC is proposing a structurally balanced budget which includes the fifth consecutive year of millage rate [property tax rate] reductions, while continuing to fund the critical Capital Improvement Plan, Pavement Management Plan, Chip Seal Program, and improving public safety through investments into the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and the Nassau County Fire Department.

Understanding the demands of the County residents and the future economic pressures, the tentative budget continues to focus on improving the quality of life while working within the restricted revenues of the County.  While still providing a reduced millage rate, the budget is also structured to continue funding for investment into land conservation and management programs, in line with the request from the community and pursuant to the voter-approved referendum in November 2022.

As Nassau continues to be one of the fastest growing counties in both the State and the Country, this population growth requires additional service capacity to meet these demands. Additionally, the community continues to seek a greater quality of life and improved services to support roads, parks, drainage, and public safety.  The BOCC understands these growing demands and has continued to focus on supporting public safety operations through the Sheriff, Fire Rescue, Emergency Operations, and Animal Control, while also supporting the Pavement Management Program, Chip Seal Program, Drainage Ditch Maintenance Program, and new and improved parks and sports fields.

The BOCC’s engagement and efforts in the budget process through the annual Winter Strategic Planning Sessions, the development of the Strategic Plan and Capital Improvement Plan, along with the annual review and updating of the guiding county policies, continue to result in smart financial planning. These actions also provide for a transparent and results-driven budget process that focuses on the reduction of the millage rates and improving services to county residents.

The July 28, 2025 budget workshop can be viewed online at www.nassauclerk.com/watch-meetings.

If you have any questions regarding the tentative budget for Fiscal Year 2025/2026, please contact Chris Lacambra, Director of the Office of Management & Budget, at (904) 530-6010, Option 2, or via e-mail at [email protected].

Turtle Talk Tuesday: Sea Turtles and Plastic Pollution

7/29/2025

7/29/25 @ 6:00 a.m.- It's Turtle Talk Tuesday!

Did you know that plastics can be deadly to sea turtles? Ingested plastic can cause intestinal blockages, internal injuries, and even drowning. Items like fishing lines and plastic bags can also entangle sea turtles, making it difficult for them to swim, feed, or surface for air.

The Oceanic Society, a nonprofit founded in 1969, is dedicated to protecting marine wildlife and habitats. Through conservation programs, public education, and ocean-friendly initiatives, they are helping turn the tide on threats like plastic pollution.

Their powerful video, Sea Turtles – Deep Dive, sheds light on how plastic pollution is impacting sea turtles worldwide and what we can do to help.

Residents are urged to watch the video and join the movement to protect sea turtles.

On Friday, July 25, 2025, Nassau County Fire Rescue officially began operating out of the brand-new Station 70, located at the corner of Nassauville Road and Hardy Allen Road. The 8,453 sq. ft. facility features three apparatus bays housing an engine, rescue unit, and tanker. It also includes 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half bathrooms, a living room, kitchen, and exercise room, providing firefighters with the space and resources needed to serve the community effectively.

This is the second of two new fire stations completed in 2025, further demonstrating Nassau County’s ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety and ensuring fast, reliable emergency response for its residents.

We look forward to celebrating this important milestone with the community during a Ribbon Cutting and Station Dedication Ceremony in August.

Public Hearing Scheduled to Discuss Amendments to Beach Ordinance

7/24/2025

7/24/25 @ 9:00 a.m.

In October 2020, Nassau County adopted a new Beach Ordinance to protect citizens, the environment, and wildlife on beaches in the unincorporated area of Amelia Island (from Peters Point south to the State Park) and to consolidate regulations related to beach activities into one comprehensive document. Since its adoption, staff has continually worked to review beach driving regulations.

Recently, the Board of County Commissioners engaged Coastal Conservation Group, LLC, a northeast Florida firm with expertise in biology, sea turtle research, conservation, sustainability and endangered species monitoring, to conduct an environmental assessment of Nassau County beaches. This included a review of the current Ordinance and related County procedures, as well as meetings with County staff and the beach security team, Giddens.

Based on this assessment, County management staff are recommending amendments clarifying legal intent, motor vehicle access hours, enforcement, defining beachfront park areas, and providing for a Protected Species Management Plan, pursuant to Florida Statute Chapter 89-445 (Senate Bill 1577). Some of these proposed changes are simply to streamline and clarify language; however, there are a few notable revisions we want to bring to the public’s attention:

  1. Clarified language affirming the Board’s intent to comply with the Federal Endangered Species Act.
  2. Revised hours for motorized vehicles on the beach during sea turtle nesting season, requiring all vehicles to be removed by 7:30 p.m. from May 1st through October 31st each year. From November 1st through April 30th, the vehicle removal time will revert back to 9:00 p.m.
  3. Revised hours for horseback riding, prohibiting horseback riding between 7:30 p.m. and 7:30 a.m. during sea turtle nesting season, May 1st through October 31st each year.
  4. Adoption of a Protected Species Management Plan to enhance protection measures for all protected species on the beach.

A public hearing to consider the proposed Ordinance revisions has been scheduled for Monday, August 11, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. The hearing will be held in the Commission Chambers at 96135 Nassau Place, Yulee, FL 32097. The proposed Ordinance will be included in the meeting agenda for public review. Copies are also available by emailing [email protected] or by calling the County Manager’s Office at (904) 530-6010.

While visiting County beaches, you may notice new green cones placed around sea turtle nests. These cones create an extra conservation zone to help protect these environmentally sensitive areas. This is another important step in safeguarding our sea turtle population and providing additional protection for our already healthy dune system.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter and for your continued support as we work to protect our local ecosystem while balancing the needs of our residents and visitors who enjoy our beaches.

7/23/25 @ 11:30 a.m.

On Saturday, June 21st, Yulee Ballpark was filled with energy and excitement as hundreds gathered for the Two All Community Day Event, hosted by the Two All Foundation, the nonprofit organization founded by hometown hero Derrick Henry.

The event featured an array of free, family-friendly activities, including waterslides, obstacle courses, yard games, and more. In a special moment of generosity, 300 lucky attendees received free bikes and backpacks, all donated by the Foundation.

Derrick Henry was present for the entire event, warmly greeting guests, handing out backpacks, and making memories with fans by posing for photos and signing autographs. His kindness and humility left a lasting impression on all who attended.

Nassau County Parks & Recreation was proud to support this incredible community celebration. Special thanks go to the many volunteers who helped make the day a success, and to the Yulee High School Cheerleaders, who brought their Hornet spirit to life for the crowd.

Most of all, thank you to Derrick Henry for continuing to give back and invest in the community that raised him. Your generosity and leadership are truly inspiring.

Be sure to check out this video from the event, created by Nassau County's Multimedia & Communications Manager Omari Matlock.

7/22/25 @ 3:45 p.m. - Nassau County Fire Rescue and Nassau County Animal Services have teamed up to raise awareness about the wonderful pets waiting for their forever homes. Today, NCAS visited NCFR Station 10, where firefighters were all smiles as they spent time playing with adoptable dogs and cats. Partnerships like this highlight our County's commitment to caring for animals in need.

We appreciate the efforts of NCAS for caring for animals at the shelter and doing all they can to find them safe, happy homes. We are also grateful to NCFR for showing these pets so much love today and for helping spread the word about local animals in search of their forever families.
