6/17/21 @ 1:30 p.m. - At the meeting held on Wednesday, June 16th, the Board approved Resolution No. 2021-137, honoring Wanda Lanier on her retirement from Barnabas Center, Inc.

Ms. Lanier has served as Chief Executive Officer for Barnabas Center, Inc., since June 2010 and has been very successful in providing help and hope to individuals and families in need.

Under her leadership, Barnabas Center, Inc., has been able to expand their healthcare services and successfully led a capital campaign and endowment campaign to purchase and renovate a comprehensive service facility. This had led to the agency winning multiple awards and recognition including the Florida Blue Sapphire Award; Nassau County Chamber of Commerce Non-Profit of the Year (multiple years); the highest 4-star rating from Charity Navigator; and the Platinum Seal of Transparency from GuideStar.

Ms. Lanier has always demonstrated professionalism when representing Barnabas and is become admired by many for her strong work ethic and her compassion for the individuals and families she encountered.

Congratulations Ms. Lanier on your retirement. We appreciate everything you have done for the residents of Nassau County and wish you many years of health and happiness!

6/17/21 @ 10:35 a.m. - According to the Amelia Island Convention and Visitors Bureau (AICVB), Nassau County's tourism industry is booming and lodging taxable sales are at a record high.  The AICVB has issued a Press Release providing information on estimated lodging taxes sales for April which were a near record of $18.4. They also indicated that May is expected to show similar increases, due to a successful Amelia Island Concours Week and the Memorial Day weekend.

LOW COST SPAY/NEUTER VOUCHERS AVAILABLE

To reduce the number of unintended dog and cat litters in our area low cost spay/neuter vouchers are now available at Cat’s Angels and Nassau Humane Society, Fernandina Beach, Nassau County Animal Services, Yulee and Camden Humane Society, Georgia.

• Cats: spay/neuter, rabies, FVRCP = $10
  
• Dogs: spay/neuter, rabies = $40

To qualify for the program, applicants will be asked to provide an ID, and one of the following:
Medicaid card, EBT food stamp card, disability check stub, 2020 tax return demonstrating less than $25,000 per individual, or $40,000 per couple.

All services will be performed at First Coast No More Homeless Pets in Jacksonville. The program is sponsored by Cat’s Angels, for more information, call (904) 321-2267.

6/12/21 @ 1:45 p.m. - Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the Woman’s Armed Services Integration Act, signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1948. This day, Women’s Veterans Day, is meant to acknowledge the contributions made my women in our military.

According to the Department of Labor, there are currently about 2 million living women veterans in the United States, making up about 10% of the overall veteran population. Today, we commend all of them for their service to our Country. We would also like to take this time to recognize some of the wonderful women veterans serving Nassau County.

In January 2021, the Board of County Commissioners adopted the Conservation Land Acquisition and Management (CLAM) program which will guide the County in identifying, ranking and assessing conservation lands for acquisition and management. The acquisition of conservation land requires specific skills and oversight not typical to the usual volunteer committee so the County solicited applications for volunteers to serve on the CLAM Comittee with experience in the following areas:

• Natural resource management and biology
• Agriculture and forestry
• Community planning
• Environmental engineering or civil engineering where their work has been in stormwater or green infrastructure projects; or
• Environmental regulations, land use law, or commercial real estate that has dealt in vacant, rural lands

Solicitation for members was open from February 19 through March 26. The County received 14 applications meeting the minimum skills, expertise and demonstratable experience that relate to the acquisition of conservation lands.

On May 24, 2021, the Board appointed five (5) CLAM Committee Members as follows: • Brandy Carvalho (Term 2021-2025) • Bill Korn (Term 2021-2025) • Bill Watson (Term 2021-2025) • Chris Hill (Term 2021-2023) • Leonard Wood (Term 2021-2023)

We appreciate their willingness to serve and look forward to working with each member. The first meeting of the CLAM Committee will be held in July (date to be announced).

Dedication Ceremony for Station 71
 
Nassau County, Florida, June 11, 2021 – On Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at 4:00 p.m., a Dedication Ceremony will be held in celebration of the grand opening of Nassau County Fire Rescue Station 71, located at 96262 Chester Rd., Yulee, FL.
 
The property was provided to the County in 2004 through a public-private partnership with Matovina and Associates, the developer for the Heron Isles community, who conveyed the property to the County for a future fire station to accommodate the rapidly growing Yulee area.
 
District Three County Commissioner, Jeff Gray, stated, “As a County Commissioner, our number one responsibility is the health, safety and wellbeing of the residents of Nassau County. This new station does just that. It will improve emergency response times and the quality of services for the residents in which it serves”.
 
The 8,453 square foot facility features 3 bays with an engine, rescue unit and a tanker. The facility also features 11 sleeping quarters, 4.5 restrooms, a common area with a living room and kitchen, as well as an exercise room. The station will house a Battalion Chief to lead the emergency personnel assigned to each shift.
 
Nassau County Fire Chief, Brady Rigdon, stated, “Fire station 71 is by far the crown jewel of the Nassau County Fire Rescue Department and one that all Nassau County citizens can be proud of. Several of our members have been involved in the design, which has been ongoing for several years, and the men and women of our department are thrilled to see it finally completed. The station meets our current needs and also provides room for future department expansion. We look forward to providing outstanding service to the surrounding community from this new facility. Thank you to the Board of County Commissioners for their unwavering support of your Fire Rescue department”
 
The project was a design-build project with the RAM Group completing the initial design and Core Construction completing the design and construction. Nassau County owns the plans, which may now be used for future stations, in lieu of having to hire a firm to design future stations. This will not only save the County money on future projects, it will also save time in the construction process.

6/7/21 @ 5:00 p.m. - At the May 24, 2021 meeting, the Board approved Resolution No. 2021-087 proclaiming the week of June 7 through June 11, 2021 as Code Enforcement Appreciation Week.

Code Enforcement Officers provide for the safety, health, and welfare of the citizens in this community through the enforcement of building, zoning, housing, animal control, fire safety, environmental and other codes, and ordinances.

Often, their efforts go unnoticed, however Nassau County's Code Enforcement Officers work hard for compliance to keep our community clean and safe! They are dedicated, well trained, and highly responsible individuals who take their jobs seriously and are proud of their department and the local government within which they serve.

We appreciate them and everything they do for the residents. Please take time this week to learn more about Code Enforcement and if you see a Code Enforcement Officer, tell them thank you for their service and dedication.
