PictureCommissioner A.M. "Hupp" Huppmann presenting a Proclamation to Alivea Maynard with the Women's Center of Jacksonville
3/31/26 @ 3:00 p.m.

At its Monday, March 23 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) proudly approved a proclamation designating April 2026 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

This year marks 25 years of progress in raising awareness, supporting survivors, and working toward prevention. With the theme “25 Years Strong: Looking Back, Moving Forward,” the month serves as both a reflection on how far we’ve come and a renewed commitment to creating safer, more supportive communities for all.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is a time to honor the courage of survivors who have shared their stories and the advocates who continue to lead efforts for change. It also reminds us that prevention is possible when we act with intention, supporting one another, practicing consent, and fostering environments rooted in care and respect.

The BOCC joins community partners and residents in recommitting to a future free from sexual violence, one where healing is supported, awareness is strengthened, and every individual feels safe and valued.

A special thank you to the Women's Center of Jacksonville for their continued advocacy, support for survivors, and for attending the meeting to stand alongside the community in this important effort.

3/31/26 @ 10:15 a.m.

Nassau County is proud to announce the grand opening of Fire Rescue Station 90 with a Dedication Ceremony scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. The new station is located at 3195 County Road 2 in Hilliard and represents a significant investment in public safety for residents in the western part of the county.

Constructed by Acon Construction, this modern, 10,891-square-foot facility is built to support day-to-day operations and emergency response. The station includes 11 sleeping quarters, four and a half bathrooms, a full kitchen, living area, and an exercise room for on-duty personnel. It also features four apparatus bays equipped to house an engine, rescue unit, and tanker, as well as a brush truck to allow crews to quickly respond to wildfires in rural Nassau.

Nassau County Fire Chief Brady Rigdon stated, “This new Fire Station 90 replaces an outdated facility that had faithfully served our community for many years. Our firefighters deserve a safe, modern space that supports their important work, and this station delivers just that. More importantly, it allows us to serve the residents of this area from a much nicer facility with enhanced capabilities. This investment will benefit our community for many years to come.”

Station 90 is one of three fire stations recently completed along with Station 70 on Nassauville Road and Station 10 on Edwards Road.  Together, these new facilities reflect the Board of County Commissioners’ strong commitment to public safety and proactive investment in critical infrastructure. By strategically expanding and modernizing fire rescue resources across the county, the BOCC is ensuring that residents receive faster response times, improved service, and enhanced protection for years to come.

Chair Alyson McCullough stated, “We are incredibly proud of the progress the County has made in enhancing public safety for our residents. Fire Station 90 is a clear example of our commitment to providing first responders with the tools and facilities they need to serve effectively. This investment not only supports our firefighters, but also ensures our community is well-protected now and into the future. It’s also a tangible example of tax dollars at work, thoughtfully used to strengthen services and infrastructure that benefit every resident.”

The public is invited to attend the Dedication Ceremony which will include messages from your Elected Officials, the Fire Chief, a ribbon cutting, and a brief tour of the station. We look forward to seeing you there!

Successful Waste Tire Recycling Day Event

3/31/2026

3/31/26 @ 8:45 a.m.

On Saturday, March 28, 2026, Nassau County Solid Waste hosted the Waste Tire Amnesty Day event, giving residents the opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted tires. A total of 733 tires were collected and properly recycled, helping to keep our community clean and protect the environment.

Improperly discarded tires can pose serious environmental hazards. They can collect rainwater, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other pests, and when burned or left to decompose, they can release harmful chemicals into the air, soil, and water. Recycling or properly disposing of tires helps reduce these risks and supports a healthier Nassau County.

The County extends a big thank-you to our Public Works and Solid Waste employees for their hard work in organizing and operating this event, and to all the residents who participated for doing their part to ensure tires are disposed of safely and responsibly.

The next Waste Tire Amnesty Day Event will be scheduled for the Fall of 2026. Residents are reminded that each household may dispose of up to four (4) car or truck tires per year, free of charge, at the Convenience Recycle Center, located at 46026 Landfill Road in Callahan (with proof of residency). Proper disposal helps ensure tires are safely managed and reused in environmentally responsible ways.

Detour Update: Amelia Island Parkway & Buccaneer Trail Roundabout Project

3/30/2026

3/30/26 @ 3:15 p.m.

Nassau County is committed to keeping traffic moving as safely and efficiently as possible during construction.

Additional detour signage will be installed at the AIP/Fletcher intersection and at Bill Melton / Fletcher to better guide motorists to continue along the planned detour route.

Important guidance for northbound drivers:
Please do not use Bill Melton from Fletcher unless you are local traffic only. For example, if you are visiting the Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course or live/work in the Via Del Rey / Bill Melton / 1st Avenue area.

For through traffic, please continue along Fletcher to the Sadler Road roundabout as the primary detour route. If your trip qualifies as local traffic near Simmons Road, that route may also apply.

Additional signage to be placed:
  1. Additional arrows at the AIP/Fletcher intersection to direct traffic to continue northbound
  2. Road Closed To Thru Traffic on Bill Melton and an additional arrow at Bill Melton to direct traffic to continue northbound on Fletcher
  3. Road Closed To Thru Traffic on Via Del Rey
  4. Additional northbound detour signage to direct traffic to continue northbound to Sadler

Thank you all for your patience and courtesy on the road . We truly appreciate how residents are working with us to make this project a success. Safer intersections are on the way!

Drive carefully, follow the signs, and stay alert in the work zone.

Traffic Update: South Fletcher and Buccaneer Trail

3/27/2026

Picture
3/27/26 @ 1:15 p.m.

Construction is underway for the new roundabout at Amelia Island Parkway and Buccaneer Trail. Based on traffic observations Thursday afternoon, the signal has been adjusted to better accommodate north/south traffic, and a team will now be onsite during peak hours to provide additional traffic control. These measures have already provided noticeable relief this morning.

Action will also be taken today to modify the northbound part of the detour on South Fletcher Avenue as follows:
  • Drivers heading northbound on Fletcher will use the roundabout at Sadler and Fletcher, then continue southbound on 14th Street. This updated routing is designed to keep traffic flowing continuously and help minimize delays along Fletcher while we advance construction.
  • The southbound detour from 14th St to Simmons Rd to Fletcher will remain unchanged at this time.

Please note that traffic counters were put in place at the beginning of the week, with the intention to make adjustments to the traffic light at South Fletcher and Buccaneer Trail. Those are being removed today. Based on the data collected, additional adjustments may be made as needed.

We want our residents to know that we are actively monitoring conditions, listening to your feedback, and making real-time adjustments to improve traffic flow and safety. Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and understanding as we move this project forward for the long-term benefit of our community.

If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Recognizing the Impact of Landscape Architecture

3/26/2026

PictureCommissioner Jeff Gray; Jon Korman of England-Thims & Miller, Inc.
3/26/26 @ 11:30 a.m.

At its Monday meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as Landscape Architecture Month and designating April 1 as Professional Landscape Architecture Day. The proclamation highlights the vital role landscape architecture plays in analyzing, planning, designing, and stewarding both natural and built environments. From parks and streetscapes to campuses and public spaces, landscape architects translate vision into action, creating places that are not only functional, but also healthy, safe, and resilient for residents and visitors alike. Their work, grounded in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), directly contributes to the infrastructure and overall quality of life in Nassau County.

The BOCC’s recognition also underscores the profession’s long-standing impact on shaping the American landscape, particularly as the nation approaches the America 250 milestone. Licensed landscape architects are essential in safeguarding public health, safety, and welfare through thoughtful, technically sound design of outdoor spaces ranging from playgrounds and therapeutic gardens to stormwater and transportation systems. Locally, their contributions support economic development, tourism, and environmental protection, strengthened further by academic programs at institutions like Florida International University and the University of Florida. Through this proclamation, the Board reaffirms its appreciation for the professionals who help build and sustain vibrant, enduring communities.
