Happy 91st Birthday American Beach!

Founded on January 31, 1935, American Beach was established as a place of opportunity, recreation, and refuge for African American families during a time of segregation. For more than nine decades, this historic coastal community has stood as a powerful symbol of resilience, entrepreneurship, and cultural heritage.

In honor of this milestone, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners is proud to highlight the recently released video, Beneath Our Feet – The American Beach Project, which brings to life the stories, history, and cultural significance rooted in this remarkable place. The project reminds us that American Beach’s legacy is not only preserved in photographs and records, but embedded in the land itself and in the generations who have called it home.

As we celebrate 91 years of American Beach, we recognize its enduring importance to Nassau County, Florida, and the nation, and reaffirm our commitment to preserving this treasured landmark so its story continues to educate, inspire, and endure for generations to come.

BOCC and School Board Host Joint Meeting

1/29/26 @ 8:15 a.m.

On Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the Nassau County Board of County Commissioners and the Nassau County School Board hosted their annual joint meeting. The meeting began with a presentation by School Superintendent Kathy Burns who shared an update on the overall School District. First, she shared that for the very first time, all Nassau County Schools have received an A Rating from the Florida Department of Education, and that the Nassau County School District is currently ranked first in the State!  The Nassau County School District has also been designated as an Academically High-Performing School District, one of only 10 in the entire State.

Other topics presented by Dr. Burns included an overview of their new Aspiring Principal's Academy for all Assistant Principals to prepare for future Principal positions; career and technical education courses available at schools across the county;  a new tiny-home at the Yulee High School that will serve as a training facility for students with disabilities to learn life skills; Yulee High School's Naval Cadet Program; a 911 Telecommunications Program; the Aquaponics Program at Hilliard High School; and overall school safety.

Following Dr. Burns' presentation, the Boards discussed items of mutual concern.  A big topic of discussion is how new schools get constructed. Did you know that the Board of County Commissioners, nor the School District get to determine when a County gets a new school? These decisions are made at the State level and only after a recommendation by the Department of Education.  Other discussions took place around capacity monitoring and use of School Board impact fees.

Overall, both Boards found the meeting to be informative and productive, providing valuable insight into shared challenges and opportunities. The annual joint meeting continues to serve as an important forum for open dialogue, allowing both parties to better understand one another’s roles and work collaboratively to support the needs of a growing community.

The Board of County Commissioners extends its sincere thanks to the Nassau County School District for its outstanding achievements, continued innovation, and unwavering commitment to student success. The County appreciates the District’s hard work and dedication and looks forward to continuing this strong partnership to enhance the quality of life for Nassau County residents.

Residents can watch the Joint Meeting on the Clerk of Court's website.

1/27/26 @ 5:00 p.m.  - At the Monday, January 26, 2026 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) approved a Proclamation declaring January 31, 2026 as American Beach Day in Nassau County, Florida.

Founded on January 31, 1935, by the Pension Bureau of the Afro-American Life Insurance Company, American Beach was established as an oceanfront resort for its employees and shareholders at a time when African Americans were excluded from many coastal destinations. Once a thriving seaside community, American Beach now stands as a historic jewel that continues to attract visitors from near and far. 2026 marks the 91st anniversary of its founding, and the proclamation recognizes the lasting cultural, historical, and economic significance of American Beach, as well as the ongoing efforts of property owners and community advocates to preserve its legacy for future generations.

The BOCC applauds the community members whose efforts contribute to the preservation and longevity of this unique community, keeping the dream alive for 91 continuous years.

Nassau County, Florida – January 23, 2026 -  Following a surprise visit by Florida’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO) this week and concerning comments about wasteful spending, a unified Nassau County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) respectfully dispute the CFO’s claims and invites the CFO to meet and resolve the matter in a manner that is productive for taxpayers.
“The statements made by the State’s CFO are serious, and the BOCC owes it to Nassau County taxpayers to fully and transparently evaluate any claims of waste,” said Nassau County BOCC Chair Alyson McCullough. “Accordingly, the Board of County Commissioners have requested that the CFO’s office provide the data and analytical methodology used to support these concerns, as the figures presented by the CFO are inconsistent with the independently audited financial records of Nassau County and these discrepancies must be fully explored.”

Several potential discrepancies have been identified based on the material presented at Wednesday’s press conference. Nassau County looks forward to discussing these, along with other concerning discrepancies:

• The material presented at Wednesday’s press conference stated that Nassau County’s “Actual Spending” totaled $196.3 million in FY2024/2025. According to independently audited financial records, Nassau County’s actual expenditure in FY2024/2025 was $150.6 million dollars.
• The State’s auditors did not account for the local referendum approved by 68% of Nassau County voters to fund a land acquisition program which was included in the $196.3 million General Fund budget.
• The State’s auditors failed to remove $10 million in reserves for emergencies and previously funded capital project fund balances from the new revenue calculation.
• There was no acknowledgment of the State-mandated expenses charged to local taxpayers that are not discretionary spending by the BOCC such as funding the court system and buildings, county jail facilities and operation, Supervisor of Elections, Medicaid, Department of Health, and similar operations.

“State auditors did not meet—nor did they request to meet—with any Nassau County Commissioner, county staff member, or the County’s independently-elected Clerk regarding the CFO’s stated concerns about wasteful spending prior to Wednesday’s press conference,” said District 1 County Commissioner John Martin. “Nevertheless, as stewards of the public’s trust and resources, the Board of County Commissioners takes this matter seriously and invites the CFO and his staff to meet with us to discuss these concerns.”

“The Board of County Commissioners considers this an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to Florida’s CFO—as we have to our taxpayers—how transparent and fiscally responsible Nassau County continues to be,” said District 2 Commissioner A.M. “Hupp” Huppmann. “The County is confident that a detailed and transparent evaluation of its financial records will show that Nassau County not only meets the indexed threshold referenced by the CFO, but also serves as a model of responsible fiscal stewardship for counties across the state, especially rural counties transitioning to urban communities where new citizen-demanded services are being established.”

“County staff has been directed to work with the independently-elected Nassau County Clerk to prepare a detailed examination of the County’s financial records and address the concerns raised by the CFO,” said District 5 County Commissioner Klynt Farmer. “The analysis will be 100% transparent and will be placed online for citizens to review and draw their own independent conclusion.”

The Board of County Commissioners are confident that when the discrepancies with the material presented by the CFO are reconciled with independently audited financial records, Nassau County will not only meet an indexed threshold for a growing County as promoted by the CFO, but also serves as a model of responsible fiscal stewardship for counties across the State, especially those transitioning from a rural community to an urban environment where new citizen-demanded services are being established.

New Signage on County Road 121

1/21/2026

1/23/26 @ 11:00 a.m.

This week, county crews installed new "No Thru Trucks" and "Local Delivery Only" signage along County Road 121, from the Stokes Road Intersection to the Duval/Nassau County line.

The move comes just a day after the Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution to regulate the traffic on CR 121 during the construction project from the Duval/Nassau County line to the CR 119 intersection. This measure is intended to reduce truck traffic through the work zones and detours associated with the construction project. Members of the community brought the concern up during a community meeting in Bryceville earlier this month, and commissioners and county staff worked quickly to make the change.

Pursuant to Florida Statute Chapter 316, the BOCC has the authority to regulate and restrict traffic to local deliveries only when necessary.

Additional traffic enforcement activities along the construction project and detour routes is planned to start on Monday, January 26, 2026.
