The Book Thief is a great book for talking about a group that is generally not discussed in World War II novels – the Germans who weren’t actively working for the Nazis. Liesel lives a fairly normal life in a terribly not-normal time, but she is surrounded by death to the point that Death itself is the narrator of this book. It's depressing, and the last 50 pages or so will require several boxes of tissues, but you still come out of the book thinking that maybe things aren't so bad after all, and that's really amazing.
